Advice on price for my bike

option one. advertise it at 4k or more like most of the half wits, and hope you can sell it to a poor sod that is silly enough to pay that for a 20 year old , 20,000rpm grenade.

Option2, trademe with reserve at 2750, and let the bidders go from there.
To me, Id say 3k, maybe 3250 at the most for one of those assuming its in reasonable nick. that depends on the state of tyres, brake pads, rego and wof up to date, if those arent up to scratch, Id go down from there.

I was recently looking for a 20,000 rpm grenade and really wanted a cbr, ended with a fzr for $3500 and would have paid that for a cbr with double the kms. At $3500 it should still be the cheapest around, but it will actually sell at that price - unlike the $4700 50,000km models I was looking at.

A lot depends on the condition of the bike, how thorough the service schedule has been, even little things like the tread on the tires... I paid a bit more than the 'usual' because the previous owner had obviously taken exquisite care with the bike. Extras like aftermarket fairings, shiny bits, and accessories don't really count for much these days. And 40 thousand 'kays on a well serviced CBR250 is nothing, these bikes are pretty much bulletproof if looked after properly!

More info, pics, service history, etc... could give us a better idea for price quotes...

The Fairings are in average condition I would say. I have done a paint job on the front half which came up pretty good. My mechanic said the engine is strong, it has a chopped down custom exhaust which looks a bit rude if you ask me , and damn is it loud ( its like Jesus parting the read seas on the motor way), the exhaust also means its not great below 6K rpm but it really starts to boggie over 8-9. I have done the following to it.

New Chain and sprockets.
All break callipers serviced new pads.
Carbs tuned and new air filter
New fuel tank bladder.

Tires seem like they have plenty of tread, Flew through last warrant apart from rear brake pads which I changed.

I would like to move up to a 600 or 750

A few things...


1) While I agree with Tigertim in terms of I wouldn't pay that much for this bike, people do & that is the market you are in so don't cut your own lunch. Unless of course you have an objection to gathering money.

2) Seeing that you are in Auckland, ie: the biggest en catchment of population a $1 reserve auction is a good idea, just make sure you have the auction finishing around 8pm ish on a week night, run the auction for as long as possible & provide every detail on the bike so as to put as many people at ease as to it's condition & write in the auction body words to the effect that the bike is in excellent mechanical condition, you know what it is worth but would prefer to let the market decide & not to bother making offers. All you need is a minimum of 2 people that REALLY want the bike & they will set the price either around the value of the others listed, meaning yours sells sooner or two bidders will get emotionally attached to it & pay a premium. The latter is obviously ideally what you would like to have happen.

3) The other way is slower to sell & has potential buyers offering less than your listed price. To set the starting point firstly see what other CBR250RR's are selling for in the Auckland region & price it accordingly with an "or near offer" next to the price. If you want $5k for it then put it on at $5,500 ono. But be aware yours will be compared a lot more closely to others in that price range.

I would like to move up to a 600 or 750

the underlined sections will affect your price. By painted yourself, do you mean you did a really tidy rattle can job, or an average job with proper equipment, because the latter would be far better than the prior.
a cut down can etc isnt gonna help much either, unless you're selling it to a brainless bogan type

A very good MC22 will fetch 4-4.5k in real life, remember most $5k advertised MC22s don't sell for anywhere near that much
