View Full Version : How much faster will the TT Zero bikes go this year?
With the TT Zero race coming up lets see.
Team Mugen (not really Honda right) it seems is the favorite to take out the £10,000 prize money for the first bike to do a 100 mph lap.
John McGuinness has more wins (17) than anyone around the TT circuit so can't really get a better rider for the bike.
As far as power goes you can dial up whatever you want on these machines but its more about economy and judging power usage so you don't go down on power before the end of the lap. 22 minutes 38.28 seconds is a 100mph lap so just over a 3C burn on the batteries ignoring any regeneration.

I'm wondering if everyone over 100mph will get 10k? Or possibly it will go to the fastest in the event of multiples?
The Mugen/Honda thingy should be good, based purely on Hondas might. But you'd be gambling heavily to past the Moto Cysz (spelling?). 2 years experience and another years development on last year.
One thing's for sure, it'll be a really good race this year.

I read it as first to do 100+mph lap. So the first practice laps could be pretty balls to the wall until it gets got!

"The TT Zero Challenge Lap Award of £10,000 will be presented to the first team to complete a lap at over 100mph, or in the case of multiple 100mph laps being achieved the award will be made to the highest placed finisher. There will also be limited edition trophies, designed by a Manx artist, presented to the first 10 teams to average over 100mph lap on the Mountain course."

MotoCzysz, from Portland, Oregon, narrowly missed out on recording the first 100mph lap by an electric bike at the Isle of Man TT Races.
Their E1PC machine, ridden by Californian Mark Miller, lapped the iconic mountain course in a time of 23 minutes 22.89 seconds to take the honours in the TT Zero race. (99.513mph)

Isle of Man TT star Michael Rutter narrowly missed out on cracking the prestigious 100mph mark for an electric bike for the first time in today’s SES TT Zero Race.
He took his Segway MotoCzysz machine to an electric bike record 99.64mph lap, breaking the record that his team-mate Mark Miller set last year.

This one of the coolest IOMTT videos I've seen! Love the way they have google earth along the top of the screen showing where the bikes are and elevation above sea level at the bottom. Not to mention the continuous views of both Rutters and Millers bikes.
See Kawasaki is using the six speed gearbox and their rider is yet to even test ride the bike. Don't really rate their efforts definitely wanna see how they go.

I am interested to see if Brammo can do better this season. Apparently they just got a nice big fat injection of funding (but perhaps it got poured into their production side rather than the racing side)
Testing at Caldwell Park on the 25th.Honda has bought two bikes out for the TT and are testing another back in Japan at the same time.

Not that surprising really. Would be very bad publicity for Zytec if the bike was completely classed or failed. And there hasn't been any reports of the bike even being tested to my knowledge.

Two horse race "America vs Japan" I reacon with USA's Motocyscs the one I favour.

With Sunday’s session cancelled on the account of rain, today’s combined practice/qualifying session for the 2012 SES TT Zero started under ideal conditions. With over 10 bikes starting from Glencrutchery Road, it was Michael Rutter on the 2012 MotoCzysz E1pc who lead the field from the line to the finish — setting in the process the first 100+ mph lap for the electrics on the Mountain course, albeit unofficially.
Despite Rutter also posting a very impressive 153.200 mph trap speed at Sulby, for at least several more days the £10,000 bounty the Isle of Man government has put on the 100 mph barrier will stay in the island’s coffers, as the average lap speed has to be set during official timing, i.e. during a race lap.

Any idea what lap that was in?
1st lap would be too hard with the standing start, 2nd lap and you'd have lost a whole lap of juice....

They only do a one lap race. I presume they only do one lap of practice at a time too.
Although John McGuinness is ultra-smooth, unless they've got a bit of juice in reserve for the race it looks the extra weight he carries might be bit too much of a mountain to climb :killingme, something he admits to himself.
Weather here has been shite all today, fingers crossed, it'll clear overnight...
1ST Rutter 104.056 mph
2ND McGuinness 102.215
3RD Miller 101.065
After the race a delighted Michael Czysz said:
“The greatest motorcycle riders and manufacturers in history are synonymous with the Isle of Man TT Races and I am so proud to be adding the name Segway Racing MotoCzysz to that list. What the team has achieved today is truly ground-breaking and is the culmination of years of hard work.”

Damn impressive! Now how long before they can run 6 laps? Swapping battery packs will probably be a mongrel...

Swapping battery packs will probably be a mongrel... Doubt it, they will make a quickchange battery set up if it comes to it, like they've done with wheels on race machinary...

Yep, but it's another leap forward they have to make...
All power to them

OR AN INDUCTION CHARGER!
Maybe they should start using capacitors!
or warm semiconductors!
lol.

Yeh, but they have the added problem of connecting power up, as well as the mechanical; and I've heard those packs can vaporise spanners if they are put in the wrong place...
Still fairly simple to get around though, and its not like they will ride off if the pit crew forget to connect up the battery
