This article is absolute gold if you want a really comprehensive look into setting up racks and soft luggage on any bike but especially more performance oriented bikes that often lack load-bearing mounting points. It also covers a range of associated soft luggage topics such as mounting, loading, strapping materials, avoiding chafing, general tips'n'tricks and much more.
This article was written by Ian Meyle who recently began contributing outstanding quality articles to Adventure Guide, he has tested these applications on numerous adventure rides including an epic 20,000km through Russia/Mongolia plus thousands of K's through New Zealand.

Reading this tonight! Any body ever seen info on somebody getting a steel subframe for an EXC built up? Pretty simple so can't see why not. Just add a few more tabs etc to mount a tail rack. Then again just buy some Wolfman E-10 panniers and learn how to travel really really light (18l total in the panniers).
Cheers R
but especially more performance oriented bikes
So a must read for KLR riders then - I will study tonight, thanks mate

After pulling out the DRZ400 subframe to do some work I noticed far from symmetrical and oddball shaped it is, reproducing one in 4130 for adventure luggage would be great, but a very a time consuming job. The KTM 450/5XX subframe is far more basic, you'd think there would be an individual or company that produces them, especially for the common bikes like the KTM

When I typed the words "performance oriented bikes" you and your KLR leapt to my mind mate
