Fear and it's associated brown stuff is a great lubricant for rapid movement....
Shows how complacent we've got when you're happy to use just one axle stand Neil...felt it out here too, just rattled the windows though.

After a short pause I declared to the office "5.2" and kept on typing the e-mail I was doing. Guess that means I'm used to them.

Yeah. I rang them last week to make sure our claim was still alive. It is.

Christchurch aftershock knocks confidence (http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-stories/13787062/bill-english-says-latest-earthquake-may-slow-rebuild/)
Hard to know what to say really :(... fuck the people protect the money springs to mind. Other than that, would an exodus of people to another area (a new Chch so to speak) leave enough "quality" property around to fill the void in regards to housing and quell the concerns of the insurance companies? Granted that would depend on what the folk of Chch think, but the options are slim given that it looks like nothing will really happen unless the insurance companies are satisfied.

My sympathy for Christchurch people gets less and less every time I see them on TV protesting about demolishing that pile of rubble in the square FFS!
Moving right along, aren't there enough "real" problems to deal with up there?

They are a minority. It's just that they get publicity. Most of us would be happy to see the back of it in the circumstances.
What I wish someone would yell from the rooftops though is that while yes, it is technically feasible to save the pile of rubble, it would take a stupid amount of money ... and much more than it would cost just to build a new one.
The other thing that really pisses me off is that the protestors would be spending someone elses money not their own. If they want to front up with the xxx million required, go for it you ... you ... you ... damn. Can't think of a suitable collective noun for them.

i'm not a god botherer or anything but i think the cathedral is the most iconic building in nz, i've always looked at it more than any other building we have.
shame they can't just ring fence it throw a tarp over it and let it sit for five years, then make a choice on it's future.
simple as that

Yep. A shame indeed but I think that in all respects we need to make pragmatic decisions unencumbered by emotion.

If there is one historic building in Christchurch they should save then that should be the one

Yup there are much more important and urgent things that that money could go towards.
Its only a building, it maybe iconic but build something else equally iconic in its place.

I don't know what else is more iconic than a 140 years old building that stood almost since the establishment. What... you mean something like the Chalice, a giant icecream cone?

That seems to be the sentiment of a lot of ChCh residents too. But it's as much a protest about the residents lack of power or influence on what is being done to our city by people appointed by a government which doesn't live here....
It came as a major shock to a lot of people to find we had a bishop with an agenda which included getting rid of the hard to maintain and "irrelevant" Cathedral at the first opportunity. If Parker had balls he'd be saying "who will rid me of this turbulent priest".....
And Brownlie....shit, he's an RC and has nothing invested in the issue. The Basilica which you hear very little about is at least as badly damaged but it will be repaired - eventually.
For the benefit of the out of towners, a shitload of overseas experts on this type of building have said it's fixable - and offered assistance, in many cases free of charge. But the Church has made up it's mind and won't be pressured.
I'm not a god botherer either - but in this one case, I'm with the people who want to save it.

While I sympathise with Christchurch residents that they have had to endure the earthquakes physically, don't forget that the rest of us are paying for it as well.
There are also spin off's in the fact that Christchurch has more work opportunities than any other centre in NZ in a work depressed period.
It just gets a bit tiresome watching all the procrastination and pissing about over things that don't actually matter much in the shorter term!
Anyone notice how the Japanese are just getting on with rebuilding their massive damage compared to our little city? .. :wait:

Japan probably has a lot more money and people to do the rebuild with
There are quite a lot of new buildings going/gone up
