View Full Version : Bus Drivers Are Cool

Going home the other night and I was at the intersection of Northcote & Anzac, heading north, I was first at the lights and a bus was next to me, I looked at the driver and noticed he was reading a magazine, but then he stopped and was looking at my bike, he smiled and lifted up a copy of the latest Kiwirider magazine, then someone on a green kawasaki pulled up in between and we all exchanged hello's and nods before the lights changed and we all went on out merry way. It just felt kinda cool to have a sense of camaraderie.
I've also been going out of my way to be helpful to bus drivers, I'm doing this so that we can build up trust between bikers and bus drivers, after all, we are sharing lanes in town.

Is this sort of like a disease? Wouldn't mind that one doing the rounds. Bus drivers here are like taxis - own the roads :bash:

i dont like bus driver - mostly coz of the way they drive... as the other dude said... they think they own the damn road.
but i like their job - driving all day and meeting new people, well checking out new people ;)

I hate Bus drivers, seems like everyone of them in CHCH are out to get bikers. They wait until you are right next to them before pulling out and trying to squash you!!. I swear I can hear a maniac laugh everytime.
Dodgy bloody busses!!!

welcome Hondaone.. and good on ya pops.. Must seem strange to drive something the size of a whale.. then go drive a bus.. ;)
dunno.. on one hand, they could help us out and almost be 'big slow bros' on the road, but then on the other hand, they're bloody big and can appear clumsy. They have a big vehicle to manouvre and the last thing they want is some bike getting under their wheels..
Personally, I don't mind them, cos I know that we're more nimble then they and often, they're ok.. But I'm still staying weary of them..
slightly OT, since we're using their lanes, at the lights when you see a blue 'B' light, and that goes on before the green light, can bikes go on that light?

I don't know what breed I hate the most - bus drivers or taxi drivers! Both in Wellington drive like they own the road and seem to think as long as they indicate, they can pull out in front of you even if you are already alongside them when they do it. The buses have "please let the bus go first" painted on the back - like they give you a CHOICE?!!!
This guy must have hijacked the bus if he was reading KR - the real bus driver probably knocked him off his bike that day and he was at that moment tied up at the back of the bus! :devil2:

the light is white, and legislation regarding the light still only refers to buses, even though the lanes have now been opened up to bikes, which means you have to sit in the bus lanes holding up buses if the light goes white.
(ii) a white B signal for buses, a white T signal for light-rail vehicles or a green cycle signal for cycles; from http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/rules/traffic-control-devices-2004.html#6
6.4(10) If a bus lane traverses an area controlled by traffic signals, the road controlling authority:
(a) must include a white B signal and may include a yellow B signal in the display of traffic signals to indicate when a bus is permitted to turn, or proceed straight ahead, when other vehicles are not allowed to make these movements; or
(b) must include a red B signal in the display of traffic signals to indicate when a bus may not proceed from the bus lane when other vehicles are allowed to move in the same general direction; or
(c) may include a column of white, yellow and red B signals in the display of traffic signals.
This is another well thought out piece of legislation bought to by the letter L

Bus Drivers are alright... at least the Birkenhead Transport Bus Drivers are cool... I think it's just the size of them that bugs me...
If I were a bus driver I'd drive like I owned the road too... everyone bitches about them just indictating and pulling out... why not? Car drivers are assholes at the best of times... if the bus drivers just sat there and indicated they'd be there all day because no-one would let them in...
*go bus drivers!!!!*

Hell yeah, so many times I've been on the bus and noticed how long it takes for someone to let the bus in once it's trying to pull back into the traffic flow...
Whenever I'm on my bike and I can see a bus ahead trying to pull back into the traffic I always slow down and let them in.

Good to see someone who is like minded, its bikers like us that will help build a relationship between the biggest on the road and the smallest on the road (buses & bikes for those of you who are still battling to wake up on this shitty monday morning)

Meh. both me and my bikes far too slow to keep up on KB rides. Though Mr Tristan passed me going the other way a while back.
Actually, I'm really Mr WINJA's alter-id . Tis the id not the ego. Cue, Mr Satre

Bus drivers are just people, some are bad, some are good. When it rains, I catch the bus and have a chat with a couple of them I now know, all the way till I get to work. One of them even drops me off right out side my office work door, when the bus stop is actually 500m back. Most of them are very good people I'd say.

I'm usually well behaved for bus drivers, prob caus there bigger than me!
But taxi drivers are unique, how many other industries are there, where the longer you do your job, the WORSE you get at it?
And its not that there that great to start with!

I came across a bus driver one time when I was going down Dominion Rd in the bus lane...
Pulled out without looking...
Quickly stopped when he saw me (first reaction)...
Then think: 'Nah, fuck you, this is my lane!!" and charge out to block me off as I was coming down at 50 km/h.
Naturally the CBR250Rangi had no brakes, so I swerved towards the line of stagnant rush hour traffic and had about an inch to spare on each side! The clown could've killed me...on purpose? I felt thankful for all of that close quarters stuff with sheep and goods trucks on the narrower sections of the Coro coast road which gave me half decent spatial awareness...
Never had much of an affinity for bus drivers after that and a few other incidents.

I'm not a fan of Bus Drivers either, and with Wellingtons inner city roads getting narrower, Buses are definately at the top of the foodchain and they're certainly driving like it. Recently, I had a bus swing wide beside me to take a corner, and he swung right into my lane and when his back swung around, it hit my work Cage. The cage was brand new at the time too.
Prick driver was looking back at me and he kept going..... The Wanker!

You have never seen the Whale
I have... it is rather 'bulky' so to speak. I would guess 'lane splitting' only occurs if the bus lane is empty
Must be a comfy mutha though.
After being on busses for years, most of them (drivers) seem like very nice people, and they are uuusually fine when I'm riding around Auckland (but not to cars :devil2: ).

Meh, I just follow the buses as the split.
Though actually on the (rareish) occasions that I do lane split on the BMW I often find that drivers make quite an effort to let me past. Wonder why

It's not too bad, least it hasn't got 3 metres of bonnet.
