Time to upgrade the phone, so might as we get a good one eh!
Samsung Galaxy S3 (released a few days ago) or a iPhone.
Never had android or Apple product before, although I'm no luddite(I think)
Reviews seems to suggust that the Samsung is better especially with the ability to fit another battery if the old one craps out.
Any thoughts from the tech savy KB'ers?
Thanks in advance!!

If you want your phone for anything other than making calls or sending texts, then get the 1 that looks prettiest. If you don't, then it's time for a drink and drug fuelled hooker night.

Myself and the missus have both owned Samsung Galaxy phones for the last year (I'm not sure which model). For some reason my phone works great and I've never had any problems with it. The missus on the other hand has had problems with poor cell phone reception and emails not refreshing even when we are in the same area and my phone is working perfectly fine. Very weird.

Wait 2 weeks for WWDC to see what the specs on the iPhone 5 will be. Then decide if you can wait for it or if you're happy with the SGS3 with its pentile display :msn-wink:

In the end it really comes down to personal preference but some reasons why I didn't get an Iphone and got the Galaxy S2 instead:
It's an Apple product
No flash support
No micro SD card slot
Can't remove the battery
It's an Apple product
Required a new micro SIM (so will the new Galaxy S3)
Smaller screen size than the Galaxy S2
Don't like the whole Itunes thing
It's an Apple product.

The Galaxy S3 is a far superior phone in almost every way compared to the iPhone. The whole business model of the Apple corporation is to sell sub standard products with a fancy case on it, and charge double than competing products in order to lead ignorant fools into thinking that they are purchasing a superior product.
The Android platform is far better than iOS, Android is open source after all, and Google doesn't tell you what you can and can't do with your phone to the same extend as Apple. Having a look at the Apple computers on their websites is enough to put me off the brand due to their unethical business model.
Apple and Harley Davidson have a lot more in common than you might think. They should build a bike together.

The iPhone has the best camera. Marginally.

try em both in-store see which u like best (feel, look, function, speed, camera, features etc), end of day they're fairly similar (Apple has started many a lawsuit saying so) so the biggest factor is personal opinion (which you're gonna get ALOT of, Fanboys Unite!).
What you'll get here is many a fanboy pushing their side with very few informed opinions in between. Like this battery thing, face value sounds ok but I ain't never changed a cell batt in my life don't know bout you? Usually by the time your gonna change a cell batt your've gone through another couple of phones in that time more so with "smartphones" but each to their own & like I say best thing is to get em in your hands & play so head to your local Telecom store or something & play :D

I went for Android. Got a 4s for my work phone and its shite. So even though I don't particularly like Samsung I would buy that long before an iPhone

Having had years of windows and android 12 months ago we changed business to Apple iMacs and iPhones android and windows are shit, I've had all sorts of android phones won't go back apple is a quality product all the way.
I was one of those that used to say why apple now I know why.
The new iphone will "look" nice, but will functionally be still retarded.
Windows phone 7 is ok, but both apple and windows are still catching up with functionality to android.
The S3 is superb, but so is the HTC ONE X. I have the ONE V and it's pretty decent too (for half the money).

Apple have over $110 billizillin cash in the bank = over priced by a HUGE margin.
http://techcrunch.com/2012/04/24/apple-q2-earnings-apple-now-has-over-110-billion-in-cash-reserves/
I like the HTC one thing. Seems to be equivalent to the new samdung s3 overall but is slimer and lighter for the same battery power, AND it is a bunch cheaper that the snapple thingie.

No you just belong to the tall poppy club, Apple are supremely successful (they wouldn't have all that money in the bank otherwise) and make first rate product - I know this as I use it after using windows and android shit for yrs.
And you have used what apple products?

Profit is not a dirty word, yes they make a first rate product and yes I've used theior products - so nananananah, still doesn't mean that they are not over priced.
Please do tell how you decided that I'm a tall poppy knocker? When over $110 billion cash reserves does not equal over priced, and yes i'm aware of their retarded dividend policy.
arrrghhh - why is the planet full of idiotiotic teenagers willing to pay huge money for a set of functionality that can be bought for far less from companies without the "brand image"? I dispair at where this "brand awareness" is taking us.

My problem with your post is I've had most of the "android" phones, samsung, sony, glofissh(?) and none of them are a patch on our iPhone's, have built my own windows computers to my own spec's and given up our mac's and their associated software for us are worth every dollar we spent. Apple wouldn't have the money in the bank if most didn't value the quality of their product - and I'm a sight closer to retirement than being a teenager.

Yeah, apple makes good gear, I still think its over priced, and no you wont convince me otherwise!
Example, last weekend I got Mrs P got a new laptop for her b'day. Top spec with a few farkles for just under $1000. The entry level maccrock was $1500 and was significantly down spec cf what I got her. So for another 500 pingers she would have got a "flash" macbook that has about just over half the grunt.
As to your age, I'd already worked that out by looking at your profile before posting. I was complaining about my spawn.

I have spent many months deciding what to upgrade to.
Apple can fuck off and die a painful, horrible death with their crap. Android wil be the choice.
Sony or Samsung.
Motorola were a strong contender for a while as well.
Apple can fuck off. I have had enough of their poorly built shit.

workmate got it yesterday and he hasn't stopped drooling yet.
Offloading his iPhone4S to his partner :devil2:
The phone is pretty large though, but very light and the display is fantastic. Envy.... :wait:

Don't see how the Apple is over priced when mine (and many others) was free. Good phone, had an android for a while and kept crashing. Never had a problem with iphone so pretty happy. Also like being able to use it as a controller for xbox, tv, stereo, computer. mind you android probably does same thing.
Try them out in store and see which feels best.

What are you using it for?
Mines a work phone that I can use to control our entire office network/servers and Cloud machines if I need to. That way if something bad happens at work while I'm at the race track I can fix it.
Because work paid for mine and the boss is an Apple fan I got an iPhone. Would be interested in seeing if the Samsung Galaxy is a better fit but no chance of that.
Probably the biggest factor in choosing which to buy is peer pressure - what do all your mates have??

Unless you stole it or gave head, there's no such thing as a free phone. The "free" phones always have this shitty thing called a "monthly contract".
Android/iPhone/Apple/Linux/Windows.....buy the one you like....but compare Appes with erm....Apples. You can't compare an Iphone with a $300 Android phone and you can't compare a Macbook Air with a $700 Windows notebook.
Apple make quality products...but then again so are high end Toshiba and Samsung kit.
I can control my telly and use VLC media player on my droid. If I really want I can control my Windows machines, some webby servers and do some "cloudy" wifi controller stuff but it beats me why the hell anyone would want to on a phone's 4 inch screen and with no bloody keyboard. Out of fashion cheapo netbook + wifi tethering is the shizz

PC World, I think reviewed 30+ Smartphones recently and the top 2 were Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4S. Wife and I have iPhone 4's and one daughter has the S2. We all love our phones and wouldn't change so for anyone to say a particular one is crap says more about them as a person than about the phones...
We were going to get iPad's but got a steal on two tablets so got them instead. Still setting them up so can't say how good they are except that they are easy to use and laid out logically. Anyone used to an iPhone should be easily able to operate one.

The Galaxy S3 is a quad core while the iPhone 4S is only a dual core. The iPhone 4S only has 512MB of RAM, compared to the 1GB of the Galaxy S3. It's a no brainer really, the iPhone has the hardware of a $500 phone at the most, yet they sell it for double what it's worth. Only Apple would pull that off, and what's funny is the stupidity that consumers have to buy into that crap.
The fact that the iPhone has a good camera and screen doesn't make up for the fact that it's only a mid range phone at best. That's why Apple do so well; the majority of their customers are more or less computer illiterate, so they don't know that the specs are far below what they should be for a product in that price range. It's the hardware specs that you need to look at. Those are undeniable facts. Marketing hype is just that, pointless drivel intented to fool customers into paying more for an inferior product.
The hardware of the iPhone 4S isn't that bad, and it is a fairly decent phone hardware wise, but it's worth less than half the asking price. If it sold for $400, then it would be good hardware wise, but then you still have to put up with Apple's proprietary bullshit software vs the open source Android.

Seems people are very passionate about their phones!
Android vs Apple seems like Ford vs Holden
I think that the S3 will be the winner on the day, for me anyway.
Cheers
