Hey guys New bucket arrived but i need help

It has a xl/xr homebuild modified motor. Compression good etc

Problem is wiring

Has a wire coming from alternator. The 3 main winding wire gone so just one from the cover. It goes to the points and to the coil.
The points have only one wire on it. Is this correct and does it ground out till points gap open or should it have more. There is no battery so how would the bike get voltage from just one wire from alt?

Have I received a incomplete wiring system?

so is there a single winding on the stator?maybe a photo would help . Magneto ignitions dont need a battery only total loss. CDIs usually need more windings. Does it start?

i just found a ignition switch with wires cut off it can i assume it would have gone from battery(total loss and no longer there to the points)(which may be infact be a contact break). If so a simple wiring diagram would be awesome from someone in the know. It also looks to me like this may be a xl175 motor and seems to be only a 4 speed. Also the jug has been plained down alot idd say to suit the xl125 stroke and keep the compression up which its has alot of making my efforts to push start difficult and check for spark even in top gear.

Doesnt start ill go get shots. The wire is a single black and the 3 that are cut away are the yellow combos that would go to a r/r. maybe the remaining is a neutral switch wire. Be back with photos soon.

Photos i can draw up a diagram also if you like

That wiring sounds close, but I would have to look at mine tomorrow but only difference i can remember is an extra wire going to a switch to connect to ground to kill motor.

Get a new plug, get the rear wheel off the ground, get someone to turn the rear wheel(in gear), while you hold the plug to the head and check its got spark (assuming there is no kickstarter).

ok the bottom end is xl125se and I found some wiring diagrams.

Looks like the black wire from stator is correctly wired to contact break(what i was calling points) and the coil and condensor are wired ok.

I think the removed wires are for neutral switch , rectifier (6 volt) and light supply.
This should mean on the original bike the battery and r/r did nothing for the coil supply voltage. Am I correct.

Yeah. I found a diagram and it looks like it should work if the coil and condensor are ok. The kick start is gone and looks like hole caped. Ill get the mini tank mounted and try a jump start down the hill tomorrow. i should be able to hold a driver onto the HV lead if it does not fire up anbd look for a spark.

I did similar with a few old trail bikes. Just the black wire to the coil. If a wire is run from that black wire to the handlebar ... it will cut the motor if it's earthed on the bar. (or kill switch fitted)

Either push or kick start ...

Possibly an Energy Transfer or magneto Ignition System.

264387

This is the typical total loss battery ignition system and is very similar to an Energy Transfer or magneto Ignition Sytem.

As we are talking about Small Hondas, heres how to get rid of the total loss battery ignition and have a push and go.

264416

Here are details on how to convert the Hondas alternator to a Energy Transfer Magneto system.

And how Gordon Jennings converted a CB450 to energy transfer magneto.

264418

Hondas version of a low tension mag.

264419

And energy transfer mag.

A post from the ESE thread about energy transfer and magneto systems. Anything with an alternator could probably be converted from total loss battery to a push and go energy transfer or magneto ignition system.

Can't see shit in your photo's but from my limited understanding I'd be expecting to see a battery there.

When testing for spark do it with the plug out; you will be able to turn it over much easier.
Be mindful of fuel vapour, best with no carb or no fuel.

It looks to run a ground out system on the ignition and the battery etc on the original bike runs a seperate stator the r/r then battery to do the lights etc on the xl. I have wired what I think is correct stator to contact points and start switch then to coil and cap rest to ground. i have been to lazy to put the small tank on and push it to the hill. the ignition side is like the xr bikes at the moment or how I would suspect they are.

Sounds illegal to me , best sell it & start again.........
