Heres the progress thus far - This side is the side that had that least amount of frame removed, the right side has alot more removed maybe 20mm more vetically up the main weld. Note the new longer eng mounts at the back, we have strengthened in between these.
Engine work is still being done so these are just bare cases, the head fits pretty much exactly where the old 400 head used to be.
The frame was painted so we can see any stress points on the frame, paint starts flexing or crackin, we can strengthen it there..... reckon well be fine thou.264486264487264488

Cheers peps, most of the hard stuff is done, need to sort a proper radiator but that won't be hard. Once the crank is returned ( only doing a little bit to that:msn-wink: ) we can start getting serious. hopeully up and making brumm brumm noises in the next few months.
I have to go teach super bike schools at Laguna Seca, Miller motorsports park and thunderbolt raceway in July so that will hold me up a little bit......just terrible.

Awesome project, will be watching this. I'm toying with the idea of a ZZR600e motor in an L model ZXR frame

cool! I have subscribed so I can see all the rest of the pics you will be posting (hint hint)
are those cases the actual cases you will be using? reason for asking is that I have a VFR400NC30 rolling frame and that underside shot shows that the ER motor is quite narrow. Its got me wondering..... I had an idea of an RZ350 motor but something modern, fuel injected and with a bit more capacity might be the go.

There is a good link on ZXRworld orum bout a 636 engine in a ZXR.

yes mate, they are my only set at this stage - a VFR with a SXV550 motor would fit super..........

I'll look that up thanks, I think the 636 has the same rear mounts as the zx6d/e etc :niceone: I've heard of a few ZX6d/E conversions and the idea of one of those with some actual grunt interests me

If you could source one at a reasonable price. theres that guy who put one in a Prilia RS250 frame and it looked factory. Arent the cams made out of chocolate though?

Next project has to be a CBR900 in the 400 frame , its been done in the U.K. and sounds like a good project to me, the 600 goes well enough so the 900 will be much more fun filled.

A mate has put a 900 blade engine in a 3TJ FZR frame, should be rather exciting when its finished. Not much to do but a bathroom and keeping her indoors happy is the priority at the mo

It was a readers special in PB mag some years back.
Rear mounts line up apparently. Upper front mounts need fabricating.
Standard CV carbs require some trimming to fit in the frame and airbox of course is a non starter.
He even used a 5.5 rear...and the whole thing was very rideable.

The first CBR600, whilst a lovely road bike was a piece of shite in terms of its chassis compared to the same aged 400 so it made a lot of sense to graft the motor. The CBR900 was a well sorted and light piece of kit straight out the crate.....what would be the point sticking it in a 400 frame?
Can we turbo or supercharge something and stick it on track.....would be far more fun.

Your almost rite Steevie , the 600 was a wobbler but the 400s didnt come to this end of the globe till many years later anyhow so we only knew of them from mags and such. The 600 was a lovely roadbike but also a bloody deal better to race than the CBX550 before it.
The 900 wasnt as nice as some think especially to race , it was a shocking steerer and it behaved badly over bumps for some reason. The 400 has almost the same size forks as it did.
The reason i want to do a 900 / 400 or whatever is twofold, like the bike i built you its a project for me, and to some extent a " shove that in ya face " move to the soothsayers that say i know not what i do and i am a nothing in the bike world. Its like calling card much like my original CB400/4 which in race trim was showing almost 50 Hp and could hold its own with much newer and bigger bikes.
The other aspect is it would be fucking great fun to try and tame the piece of heathanistic beast dont you agree . I may even un-retire to have a blast on it.
Bring on the little guy with attitude and then put a shit load of power into it lol.

Would be FAR more interested in a VFR800 engine slapped into a lightweight sportsbike. The bike Honda should have made instead of going the lardy arse tourer way. Fuckin ulisys club have a lot to answer for

Would the engine be a large contributor to the weight of a VFR800?
I notice my minimally framed NC21 is still HEAVY.

V4 will usually weigh a fair bit more than an IL4 sadly.

It's quite interesting thinking about the development of Honda V4's.
If you look at the firs ones they are conventionally framed for a pre-alloy bike, then around the time of mine (1986) they seem to replicate a similar idea in alloy. It looks as if the engine is used as a stressed member because the frame is super spindly.
Nek minnit, big frame.
From the NC30/RC30 age the frame gets all beefy; about the same as other contemporary bikes.
Is this just the direction development of frames went in around that time or is it an indication Honda expected the engine to contribute to the rigidity of the bike but that failed? Is it just to sell bikes on the trendy image of the time?
Rhetorical questions really, just thinking about it.
EDIT: V4s carry their weight well but are heavy as all hell. A triumph in marketing over real-world performance?
