I wonder if it would react fast enough to stop a pheasant (or seagull) hitting you in the gob?

Instant Armour, Would work a treat down the pub when getting a bit lippy.
as long as its faster then a fist.
Would look pretty stupid having that shit pop out of your collar after someone has broken your face.

Um no....
Inflates in 1 tenth of a second".
36km/h is 10ms-1 so it takes 1m at 36 km/h to inflate - your head is only about 0.5m back from the front of the bike.
Now imagine you at 100kph closing on a seagull flying towards you at 8kpm to make the maths easier. Its 3 times as fast so you have traveled 3M. I'd stick with your "permanently activated" model for now.
But its interesting technology all the same and a possible route for the future (as well as all those free to choose states in the USA)

My tongue was firmly in cheek.. bet you guessed.
Awhile ago my g/f & I did a skerrick of research on a similar idea to develop an avalanche jacket using your smart phone sensor to set it off when you get buried. I quickly realised I'm not smart enough...

Not really - because if you were mr too cool to wear a helmet HD rider in gator bottom USA you would still get smacked by that gull anyway. This may be a solution to that OR to enhance existing helmets. You don't know where this could go (yet)

I dont think it would matter what you were wearing if you hit a biggish bird. It would hurt like hell.
