Having a bit of a blast home today. I was in peak traffic so everything was going pretty slow, so as per usual I began my lane split up and was cruising along fine and then I noticed this helicopter quite close, I watched it as it appeared to circle me several times, since I was moving at a speed faster than the normal traffic flow I couldnt imagine it was following anyone else so once I realised this I pulled into the flow and made some hand gestures to it, but in case it was just TV I made sure I made some fun 'legal' manouveres.
I got onto my offramp and noticed a cop behind me so I stopped speeding (it was on an offramp and it was only a little) and adjusted riding style to be more.... acceptable. Ie I didnt burn off or make my usual sneaky moves*
once I got beyond the police car I started thinking about how to post this mildly interesting story and I realised something.
I'm a dangerous rider.
If twice in 30mins I notice possible surveliance and change my riding then I'm obviously riding outside what I should be (according to the law)
Is this just me? do many people have a normal riding style and a 'legal' riding style when around police.
*sneaky move =
4 lanes of traffic, far right (to turn right) is always backed up 10+ cars but the one next to it isnt so I burn up to the front then pull in front of the car at the front of the que.
ps. the chances that the blue and white helicopter was actually watching/fliming me are very unlikely im sure. but remember its not paranoia if they are actually after you :)

.... they say even paranoics have enemies ....
seriously - when cage driving i have been known to automatically brake when seeing a police car, even if i'm already doing under the limit .... now that's downright dangerous and i'm wondering if i should start a movement to have all police banned from the roads in the interest of safety?

I got onto my offramp and noticed a cop behind me so I stopped speeding (it was on an offramp and it was only a little) and adjusted riding style...I think what you describe here Pyro is a standard biker reaction, and like mstriumph said, we tend to slow down regardless of what speed we're riding if we see a cop...sinners by nature you see. :nono:
Personally I think that *mild* paranoia can be quite healthy when it comes to road riding!! :shifty:

I love the motorway, its my speed testing zone I just get the wheels rolling and see how quick I can go, just love the look on peoples faces when I blitz past at $2.00, If I get caught I get caught, I ride how I feel comfortable.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Ghostriding once in a while, within your limits at your own risk.....
As long as you scan ahead and behind you with extreme alertness, judge your gaps and escape routes and account for all the visible variables.
Also try not to maintain a constant high speed... do your 130-140 burst as you pass one or two or three:whistle: cars MAX and get back to a steady 110... try and flick between as many lanes at once so that you do not travel in a straight line at speed, instead do so kind of at diagonal or zigzag line...... corners are great for this, try and speed through corners - but slow down on the exits of these corners as that's where Mr Plod usually hides.... Try to only speed on areas where it would be hard to park by the road and slow down as soon as you see the ends of these areas.... and only try anything on roads which you have travelled several times, know the area and know the popular plod hangouts.
Doesn't mean you'll be safe - it just means you may get lucky and not get caught.
All this was copy pasted of somewhere off the net, I would never be able to come up with it myself, or do it, or recommend it....... :nono:

Generally, I don't have a panic attack when I see a cop, because I'm (generally) not misbehaving. The exception is when I'm doing summat marginal, like lane-splitting or undertaking, or if I've left my licence at home. Last week, I was on my way home, and I thought I'd left my licence at home (it was actually in my jacket pocket, but I didn't remember putting it there), so I was trying to be good. However, the traffic wasn't moving, and the bike was overheating, so I thought "Stuff this!" and wehn I got to Curran Street (on-ramp from Ponsonby), I put my left confirminator on and went down the left of the stopped/crawling traffic. Halfway down, there was a dodgy-looking Holden: wide steel wheels without hubcaps, extra aerials, and (as I got closer) extra lights on the parcel shelf. Hmmmm... dilemma... do I carry on, or pull back in...
So, I carried on, and hoped he didn't note my number plate, or thought I was turning left (hence the indicator), and thought up some excuses for my behaviour.

Hmm,
I'm from the UK, emmigrating to NZ on Wednesday, I've got a full license, and looking to get something like a GSXR as soon as possible.
We're legally allowed to 'filter' here, which I assume is the same as what you call 'lane splitting' ie. going between, or outside of cars crawling or stopped in traffic. Am I right after reading some of these boards that it's illegal in NZ?

You'll have to check the other threads, but from a legal point of view, no, it's not allowed, unless you pass other vehicles to the right, don't stray into the next lane over, and indicate your passing manoeuvre. But the police will generally turn a blind eye to it, if the traffic's not moving, or moving very slowly, and you're not filtering at a stupid speed.

If I see the Pohleese, I usually just check the speed/give the brakes a squeeze if I'm being a little "illegal". Otherwise it's business as usual. I've filtered past a coupla three cops lately with no reaction. Perhaps they don't get too worried when you seem to know what the law is.
Indicating helps too.

Well it is kind of illegal, but if you do it in a safe manner without putting other road users at risk and keep it under the speed limit, while looking confident and in full control - smooth riding, you will be fine.

Re filtering - my understanding is that it is legal only when you pass on the right and the traffic is actually stationary. Technically you are the motorist & they are 'parked'. In practice, it is tolerated when done in a fashion such as above.

When they're stopped you can pass on any side. Get a trials bike and go over.
