anyone in NZ import, manufacture, convert or otherwise make available a diesel engined motorcycle?
i'm thinking something like this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_motorcycle#Track_T-800CDI)
or, better this (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/24/automobiles/24KAWASAKI.html) (from what i read the m2 will run on avgas, diesel, biodiesel (my goal) and kerosene. AWESOME.)
anyone with any experience in this field?
anyone with a small diesel motor (pref 2-3 cyl, turbo .8-1.1lt) they want to donate to this? volkwagen, daihatsu, mercedes....?
...just browsing...

No one has yet managed to procure the KLR diesel version for civilian use. The odd time when they have said they were going to be made available, the price was astronomical.

i am a bit of a convert to diesels.I always had a hankerin to try one but until the advent of the modern turbo common rail jobbies they werent particulary impressive or efficient. My 2005 2 litre diesel car makes 120 kw and 340 nm (250 ft lbs) of torque @ 1700 rpm.Thats MORE torque than my prevous 3.5 litre straight six petrol!.Coonversely it makes this power over a realatively narrow range(2000-4500) and doesnt have the overall flexibilty and top end rush that(bigger) petrol engines have.It has this power and torque whilst using nearly HALF the fuel that an equivalently grunty engine has.
The other thing is RUC will be really unfair on a diesel bike and the registration (ie acc payments will be astronomical cos there is a smaller acc levy(if any) on diesel at the pump).I pay about $400 to register the car because of this

Road tax exempt? That'll change if someone starts to import them.
For whatever reason I was chatting with a guy last week about fuel economy runs. The diesel bike arose in the conversation.
The dude I was chatting to mentioned that there's one that can get a range of about 1200km on a tank.
Wow.:woohoo:

poor assumptions.
The dude I was chatting to mentioned that there's one that can get a range of about 1200km on a tank. yes, yes and yes. and if all it costs is a bit of methanol (home distilling by product) and hydroxide (i'm working on it), the rest being acquired from the local deep-fry.... that represents fucking good economy. (also, come the armageddon, i'll be riding over all you suckers for weeks) (this is why the 'saki appealed) mad max: on! strap the shotgun scabbard to the forks and away we (I) go....

Bit vague there really, depends on the size of the tank, easier to stick with the litres per 100 km or mpg
my diesel ute gets 10l per 100km.

I've seen that being ridden in real life, it was on the Rakuria Sunset rally that I did back in the nineties, think he said a cruising speed of about 80km hr

Kinda sorta not really off topic, this is a good read (http://www.booktopia.com.au/is-that-thing-diesel-/prod9781741757026.html) as were his previous couple of books.

dieselbike has already been linked to... I'm sure that would have almost any info you could get your hands on.
Diesel bikes are apparently not subject to RUC, as they are under 1000kg. There is a guy who has run diesels for a while, but he makes them himself. His current steed puts out a whopping 5.5hp and I don't think it hits 100kph, but he's building a new one with 22hp...

I quite like the track bike - it'd be great for touring the world on (or doing the GC with only one fuel stop) but apparently the CVT belts are only good for around 20,000km. Be great to have a decent range eh Gremlin?

Hell yeah... I've been reviewing a Honda NC700S over the weekend. It did about 3.4L/100km. 357km on <12L. Now if I could somehow merge that consumption with my 37-38L tank...

There is a very good reason that there are no diesel bikes in production and available world wide. I am aware of the Enfield!
It is the same reason that there are no rear wheel, steer front wheel drive bikes.

I realise it's outside the design of diesel engine, but if they can put a v8 in a landcruiser, surely they can sort boxes for diesel bike...
I rekon the m103 is the go.

More room in the cockpit since there's no rear axle.

Or else a trike with a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_KD_engine#1KD-FTV">1KD-FTV</a> Toyota or something similar. 170hp should be enough power for it to screech around town in quite a dramatic fashion I would say. Cue computer chip, and make that probably 240hp. Will it wheelie, mister? I think so.

since most sedans, wagons et al have their rear wheel behind the rear seats, the only bit missing is the tunnel for the drive shaft. and i fail to believe they couldn't some up with a super skinny one of them, either.

The Neander diesel is an interesting concept, but then they put it in a godawful cruiser thing.
Unfortunate name too - riders of these would be Neanderthals.

Just been looking into these too (the CBR is the first non diesel vehicle I've owned and I feel a little dirty inside haha).
Short of building something yourself I haven't been able to find much for sale either, but with the leaps and bounds in small diesel car tech in the last few years there should be a heap of 'unknown' options/engines just waiting out there.
Anyone seen anything new regarding this lately?
