tottaly out in the air idea at the moment.

but what if our community put together our skills and made a magazine. (cough maybe called uncaged cough)

we could put the first $X amount into the cost of running the site (its quite expensive btw guys, hit that paypal link eh!) then split the rest to whoever puts articles and stuff in.

there would be an online version for sale also (perhaps only available to senior members at a cheaper rate)

we have enough bike nuts and geeks here to pull this off really well I think. enough camera's and photoshoppers (or psp'rs in my case :) ) enough countrywide members to cover events high and low.

alright, now that its in the air. lets have the comments and critizms!

Besides, I'm sure Sapnkme wouldn't object to a few extra dollars donated into the site.
What about making an online magazine if thats what you want? Small charge for downloading it... etc etc

It's not a bad idea, but would require a lot of commitment from someone, think it through, also at the end of the day the forum is so much more fun,it's interactive and you can dip in and out and add your comments without being misquoted or edited. I can alway's find something of interest here even in old threads, I don't think I would buy it. Sorry if I'm pouring water on ya coal mate, it's just an opinion after all......

I'd be up for it.. Don't mind helping out too.. There's enough of us DTP'ers to take on sections, and everyone can contribute.. I reckon keep it as a PDF, cos printing costs would be too much, and not enough would buy it. If enough people start downloading it and reading it, then may be it could be reviewed later on.. could be fun

Online is definitely the way to go ... in .pdf format as the software to read it is free and most people would have it anyway.
The cost of a paper mag would be prohibitive. I was involved in publishing a small (8 page) community newspaper about 12 years ago and it cost us $1300 to get each edition published. That was for 1000 copies I think.
And nothing to stop you selling a bit of advertising in an online version to cover costs.

nah thats fine. thats what the threads here for.
but we have the opportunity to sell it to NON Kiwibikers also.
Ive bought two magazines this month. superbiker is ok, the other one was borring and crappy. but superbiker is english I think (dont have it here) and the other ones in the store were dirt bikes. albeit by 'store' i mean BP but thats prime market. even bikers have to buy petrol sometimes.

some die-harders (about 20 of us in total at a guess not incl the KB lurkers... hi you guys) would buy it but the majority of sales would be to none kiwibikers. unfortuantly (but soon to be changed) most bikers in NZ dont belong to this site.... :)

hmmm. this seems to be the way people are thinking. I like bugJuice's idea too. well that would be much easier. hmmm. thought. party at my place to hash out ideas ? :)

an online only launch would suit this idea and if we could get our writing and all that stuff up to scratch on PDF then we could release something at a later date (already repped you for that BJ :))

Might as well just make it PDF as if you're getting it printed you'll have to anyway. Also you're going need some people who are good with vector based image editors.

And it might be worth asking the local bike shops to see who wants to advertise, as well as people who want to place ads advertising for/selling bikes.

Why sell it? Trying to administer sales just makes it hellishly complicated. Make it a giveaway initially amongst our wee community and if it's any good it'll soon get around the rest of the biking community. The actual expense of writing and preparing it wouldn't be that great as long as no one wants to be paid for their written contributions. The wee paper I was involved with was a giveaway but we actually managed to break even just thru advertising.

Have to agree with the 'Why' Theory.

Don't we have the mag content already in the site?

Some about touring,
The occasional "tits of the week" pic,
tests of bikes,
places to stay,
The cronicles of 'Trash',

it's all here!

Why would we make it cost more and harder to distribute??
I can't see it making a profit.

I've been involved in a lot of magazines, and the cost of production and printing can be monstrous, to say nothing of distribution. There are already two good bikie mags (BRM & KR) in this tiny market and I wouldn't like either of them to go bellyup because a third entered the scene briefly before itself going bellyup.
