Mmm fair point... I had not had any issues personally as I kept off the built up areas and combined gears with braking but we could change run if people prefer? I'm going to cruise over to akaroa this Sunday... will see how the hills are then :)

Can braking on black ice be done ? Would have thought you would have to be advanced advanced to pull that one off.

Did run in mid arvo month ago kiwi, gebbies, port levy. With the combo of black ice , boy racer diesel, ten speeds, between kiwi and gebbies and the cold from gebbies to port levy was enough to throw the knobblies on next day and stay off road for winter.

Talk about starting in the deep end

That's exactly why I avoid mountainous roads like the plague during winter months. It's not really worth the risk. I stick to the straight and boring roads during winter.

brp
15th June 2012, 12:48
Yeah and to avoid having to brake on slippery surfaces in the location in question in the middle of winter what speed would you have to ride at ?

Would it be safer riding round the bays with the sea air having a rumble with jack frost ?

Maybe you guys should think.
Why do the regular Wednesday night KB rides only run during daylight saving ?
Safety, no other reason really.
Grit, ice, wet roads, Diesel spills, fogged up cage windows, wind gusts , all are very prevalent around banks peninsula over the winter season.
Yes it is safe to ride those roads with experience, caution and at a speed that reflects the conditions.
As a solo rider aware of the conditions.
But to ride as a group, learners , small light road bikes, sorry guys, that's a sure fired recipe for disaster.

I ponderd upon joining you all, then seriously thought, no way.
I dont want to be the one calling the helichopper pulling your 250 out of the bush, knocking on your families front door with sad news.

Guys, please think long and hard about group riding hills at this time of the year.

15th June 2012, 15:30
Like that route in summer on a weekday, find too many cages etc in weekend to have decent blast.

To fuel the winter hunger what about joining canterbury motorcycle club and racing round Ruapuna ? - Two years ago
some KB'ers were doing club practice for $25 , got to race round decent amount of times.

lol or if you live in dunedin now and there is just ice and grit everywhere your thankful that u rode the port hills all year round when u lived in chch ;)

if u go up there aware that there is ice n grit you'll learn how to muscle the bike through it.. can only help u for future sticky or slippery situations I recon.

I don't fall off that much eh (touch wood.. about to go out now and its mighty slipper out)

Hey Eddie, I understand you to the max,
Riding year round, regardless of the conditions, sure does give you the learn.
I myself ride Banks Peninsula as often as possible. and yup dealing with the conditions is a big part of the enjoyment.
Ride those hills in summer with a group can be a great time, when you know the others enough to feel comfortable having them around you.
This suggested ride, differs, it is not experienced riders, but learners, as a group, riding in less than preferable conditions at best, in winter.
They would be better doing it solo, or if as a group thing, 5 min apart, thus riding inside their ability.
The summit road on a Sunday , in the middle of winter, is a very pleasant ride indeed
especially after a good mornings frost

Thanks Asher - Might take you up on this.... Whilst I appreciate and understand the concerns of the more experienced riders offering safety advice, my intention of listing this event was to give newer riders a chance at social runs but given the space to ride at a pace that suits them best instead of pushing beyond there individual limits just to keep up.

I'm all for minimizing risk to ensure I can get home in one piece to see my kids but at the same time I ride with the knowledge that things can seriously go wrong in a big way.

Im happy either way.. weather this week has been a bit dismal thus far... How bout we take a vote on the day?

As has been said, the people advising caution care about you newby riders. None of us want to see any of our motorcyclist/s hurt. However without the odd "butt clenching" moments nobody (particularly me) learns anything. The old one about experience being gained five seconds after it's needed still holds true.

You guys ride wherever you want to, but ride carefully. The Summit Road is a great teacher. If you concentrate on the 10 to 100 metres of road ahead of you and ride within your skills/experience you will have a good ride. Tight twisty roads teach cornering skills and isn't conning a bike along a tight winding road where "motorcycling heaven" starts.:yes::yes::yes::yes:

Have a good ride wherever you go. I will be envious of you while I am working.

And don't forget Wednesday Night Maintenance Evening, 4th July 6pm Wofman's place Gloucester Motors, Gloucester/Fitzgerald. See you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just been for a drive along the summit road from sign of the kiwi to sign of the bellbird today, pretty much the whole way is covered in grit. I wouldn't be taking my bike up there for a ride just for fun, it was bad enough going around corners in the car.

I know, I know, sometimes you just want a nice relaxing ride and ice n grit isn't that.

Had half an eye on this ride but now I might be doing the River/beach ride from Leithfield to Waipara mentioned in the Adventure Forum (but should be in the 'off road forum' this Sunday instead.

Have a nice time and take care what ever you decide. Hoping to see some more blue sky out... fingers crossed.

Went for a stroll over to Gebbies via the Summit road today. From discussions on this thread it sounded as if the grit was ankle deep so I just had to go and have a look for myself. I went Dyers Pass, Summit Road to Gebbies. Rear tyre is getting thin, picked up some glass, oh bugger super low profile tyre.

The worst part of the road gritwise was Dyers Pass Road. Once I was past the Sign of The Kiwi, on the Summit Road, the grit started to disappear and by the second cattlestop, about a K or so, there wasn't any. The road was clear until after I turned off down Gebbies Pass, on The Blue Duck side, where there was a small amount of grit.

If you guys want to ride the Summit Road I would suggest going the way I did, if you can make it to the Sign of The Kiwi, you will be over the worst of the grit. What you will face is damp roads where the "sun don't shine". So take it slowly. I went over about midday and there was no ice. If Sunday is similar to today you should be ok icewise.

Travel safely and roll on WNR!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm really gutted to say that i won't be joining in tomorrow....

I was following a nana today who was indicating left who then decided to not only swing wide into my path but also slammed brakes on to use the old give way rules....

I had two choices... hit her or the road - chose the road to cushion impact and have broken my thumb/wrist in 3 places :( Thank god for decent safety gear or I would have been munted!!

Ride safe out there guys... will be back on road once insurance pays out and bones heal.

what planet you on?
Today was a perfect day for riding.
2 friends and I decided to go to Akaroa.
We passed probably 50 bikes going there and back,
Many more were parked up at Little River.
The road was clean, dry and traffic was light compared to summer time.

Yesterday was a bit cooler, but a ride was taken, wearing the right gear.
A distance of 300k's, good fun

And everyday last week was fun in the rain drizzle and fog.
The weather enforces you to be more aware, teaches you to observe the road surfaces with a more critical eye.
Winter riding just tones your senses, reflexes and skills, and you fast learn what the back brake is there for.

So that when those stinking hot days of summer, when your sweating in your leathers, becoming dehydrated and dodging land snails,
At least you know how to avoid the crap, can see the gaps, and know the roads are more congested than those glorious frosty mornings....

look mr learner rider on ya shitty arse 250. iv done many many many years of riding in winter just cause i had to, now days my bike sits in my garage during the shit house winter months getting pimped out so i can gear up and enjoy riding on nice hot days in summer that my bike was made for. when i know there is no wet courners that aint seen the sun in weeks or bends covered in shinggle.

sure today may have been somewhat nice for a winters day but its still cold and crap out there, and the thought of going for a ride around the hills to akaroa doesnt make me wanna take my bike out for a blast thats for sure, maybe a slow ride to lil river for a coffee maybe.. but akaroa.. no thanks, not my thing..

but you keep riding in winter and getting your skills up and come summer you should be the man on the mighty keeway.. so yeah thats what planet im on. ;-)

Tell me RR have you met Dave???? He has a number of decades riding bikes of all sizes. When I met him he was riding an 1100 shaft drive which he had customised. Just because he is currently riding a 250 with a L lable, don't think he is a beginner. That old begger can ride. I suggest you check my link at the bottom of this post and look at "Sunday Ride 12 02 12".

Fair bit of traffic up there today... saw some L plates among the bikes, also cars and cyclists as usual.
Got to watch out for those Motard riders though, the worst oncoming white line crosser was one of those taking up some of my lane. Still, I was ready for him so I moved further left and we past with room to spare.

ChCh looked a bit clouded in for a while from up top.

Just home for lunch and taking off some layers after running it out of gas (to the point of it starting to starve) to see what the best case for the big tank is. 377km on 13.19L.
Be interesting to see how that changes when I get some highway and more than half throttle.
