no shit poll/thread, i'm not interested in debating the rights, wrongs, safety, public nuisance, political correctness or any other shit.
simple question, simple answers please.
How fast have you traveled on a "public road" in NZ?
for the purposes, public means a road that the public have right of access to, ie traffic is a possibility, whether or not there was any.
i'll kick it off eh.
Motorbike: 175km/h 7km of straight road near pipiroa
Car: 250km/h somewhere out the back of hamilton, about 10 years back now...

Everything from here on in this thread can only be viewed as an 'estimated' or 'indicated' speed that is almost always optimistic. GPS or speed trap data or it never happened.

This from the same person who said
why?
all these people are doing is enforcing goverment policy, be it central government, or local government.
if you don't like it, i believe the standard answer is "well you should move to another country"
you don't get to pick and choose what the policy is. you're just a subject of the state. if there is some/all of the policy you don't like.. well, it's your own damn fault for voting em in eh?

I have the most fun around 60-130kph most of the time. 60kph through a 25kph bend is as much fun as 140kph through an 85kph bend but I know which one I'd rather get wrong or have to try aviod an unexpected hazzard in!
I mean how fast is fast enough? Fast enough to get a thrill without being near the edge of the bikes limits or the riders ability is plenty fast enough for me. It's all good fun untill someone becomes a stain on the road.

You would be disappointed if you tried a real sprint.
A mates 636 read over 390 but was just shy of 260. That sort of error is fairly typical.
Not many bikes, including Hyabusa and ZX14's, crack a genuine 3 hundie at a sprint on NZ roads.

Touched 160k twice on the Bandit a couple of years ago. First out of curiousity on a straight bit of road somewhere on the Wanaka side of the Lindis Pass to see what 160k felt like. Second time by accident a couple of days later at the end of an overtaking manouever on the straight headng north out of Twizel. Buttoned off pretty quick on both occasions. Things happen too quick at that speed for this nana.
Oh, many years ago in a car between Lake Pukaki and Dog Kennel Road ... 192k but I was young and stupid. Well actually, not that young (30?) but stupid because of A) the speed, and B) it was a company vehicle.
I'm usually pretty well behaved though as I generally have Mrs Oakie as pillion on the open road. The above instances I was alone.

Had plenty of moments where my speed (indicated or true) has been in the top brackets in the poll in previous years. In the last 2-3 years however, anything in excess of 150kph would be rare, and mostly related to overtaking. Also done 100-150kph on gravel (sometimes sideways).
It took some effort to re-adjust to normal speeds again, but I'm happier for it (and my licence is in far less jeopardy).

180kph on my Dads 84 Katana 750 when we swapped bikes for a bit once.
What I assume to be just over the 160kph mark on my own bike, speedo cable had worn to bits prior so I had no reading, but it was flat out in sixth, and about three times longer than any straight I had been down before where I usually get to 160 before backing down.
In a car I've been 190 with a VERY VERY long run up.
Not something I like making a common habit out of..

....my son dropped off his liter machine for me to play on one weekend a while back, while he was doing some work on my bike...first 10 minutes of 180+ on my regular circuit was enthralling, then my usual destination/turn around spot hove into sight...had to go further which put me out on the plains...a couple of blips up to 220+ and then I realised that my whole ride was in excess of the 'keeping my licence', rules... the speed was exhilirating, but the ride was boring....about an hour and a half later I was back home from a ride that would take me half a day...I put his bike in the shed and couldn't wait to get my sportster back...no wonder some younger inexperienced riders talk so much shit, the speeds they can attain have addled their thought processes and I'm sure they rate their experience on how fast they think they can ride...it's much more fun going faster on a bucket than the tyres and chassis can handle...

i'm not entirely sure what my point in this thread was. a matter of interest.
it's interesting too, to note how many people have travelled at speeds that are "illegal" and yet so many jump to "the law" if/when i suggest something else illegal.
personally, with only a bit of foam and plastic between my head and tarmac, going that quick (220+) on a bike is just...irrational.
practice makes perfect though, and respect for anyone who can/does/did.
but surely there is an argument for raising the speed limit, if we respectable bikers can pilot a vehicle at those speeds safely...

Indicated on the dash, however certainly pre gps days and the guy on the duke was reading around the 150 mark on his speedo
and it was a well worked motor with the limiter removed and a custom built at the time igniton system

The jappa scene has a limp wrist anyway.
I like the idea of it, if I remember correctly they had a very low .Cd from factory? Something like .28 or .29?
Not sure about the .Cd, but most Audis of that era were a little bit more slippery than other cars. I wouldn't go anywhere near that brand now. Wouldn't want to be associated with the type of person that drives them nowadays. They seem to have become the psychopaths' car of choice.

 I grew up riding/driving on gravel. I also had one of the earlier (85) KTM 250 MXC's that was capable of around 100mph (160k) off road. A small bit of insanity does help tho....

Speaking of insanity, Classic_Z is currently building a street legal VW Polo with a mid- mounted Audi 4.2 lt V8...

Oh, and a turbo Z1300 with ZX12 wheels, the rear " adapted" to take the shaft drive; Skyline fuel injection, altered rake...Minimum 200hp he reckons...

Getting milk from the other end of the island! Imagine the noise it's make
Skyline F/I though...I expect it's just RB series injectors running off a PCM or MicroSquirt/MegaSquirt system.

Something like that. If he can ever stop working long enough to finish it, I reckon it will sound awesome! He's got to make a new crown-wheel and pinion ratio to take into account the smaller diameter back wheel. The whole bike sits lower, as he's also using the ZX12 forks.

How fast?
WTF!
Who cares! (except authoritarian, prudish, bullying fuckheads!)
I think somewhere around 270-280 indicated ( but who bothers looking) - but that was only to see if double Ventura packs and 40Kg of gear inside affect stability on a GSXR 1000 ........ and no, they don't!

180 (read on speedo) between Nelson and Murchison. Only lasted for a few seconds before thought "what an idiot I am". (I only did it because I wanted to experience 100mph and didn't think my speedo was reading overly accurately at that speed).

Road
4 runs of 253.x kmh on a 2001 Duc 748r at the Sprints. Was hitting rev limiter before entering timing stage due to gearing. Was probably running mid pack compared to others. However some bikes showing 270kmh on speedo where timed at lower speed than mine.
