View Full Version : POLL: Organ donation. Would you

Hitcher
1st August 2005, 20:45
Dead or alive.

Would you be prepared to donate various body parts and organs to others more needy when you die?

And how about when you're alive? Would you do it for love? Would you do it for money? Would you do it for spite? Would you think you had to honey? (Apologies to The Eagles)

The 3rd option for ones that I have duplicate of and can do with only one of. After I'm dead for any others and anyone that needs them, provided they don't go to jail inmates and the person that gets them takes a bike for a spin at some point in thier life.

Edit: No prob Hitcher, knew there was a reason for me to be on here so often...

Voted for only when I'm dead- it's already on my drivers license. But then I thought about my kids, and my wife. For them- definitely... but then my body barely works as it is, not sure anyone would want my body parts

I'm a donor on my license (hope that doesn't mean the medics go "oh we'll let this one go... we need her heart"), but sure once I'm dead I ain't gonna be using them... as for being alive... it would have to be for a very close friend/family/partner....

Yep, if I'm fu*ked and not going to make it or Brain dead, they can have any part they want except any part of my brain. I don't want my brain to be revived in any other body or fu*ked with in any way.

FIRST TIME I WENT TO HOSPITAL THE DOCTOR SAID I WAS A MOD , MOBILE ORGAN DONOR. MY PARTNER HAS INSTRUCTIONS TO LET THEM HAVE THE LOT WHEN IM DEAD , YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR PARTNER CAUSE I HEARD THAT NO MATTER WHATS ON YOUR LICENCE THEY ASK YOUR FAMILYS PERMISSION FIRST.
I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE A POLICY OF , IF YOUR NOT WILLING TO GIVE ORGANS YOU SHOULD NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO ACCEPT , MAYBE WED GET MORE DONORS

There needs to be a better system for notifying willing intent to donate organs than one's drivers licence. Who is going to look at that in A&E? Also, have you advised your next of kin/family of your intent? If they don't approve, in the absence of written instruction on your part, then their wishes take precedence. Maybe having "donor" tatooed on one's forehead is more instructional, or maybe a "donor" medic alert tag?

MSTRS
2nd August 2005, 10:03
Wouldn't have it on my licence if I didn't mean it. And it's my wishes that count, not my rellies. The ability to veto on their part should be removed.

It's true licence's are usually last resort and nearly never actioned.

Once I'm dead they can have anything thats of use, although most of it is pretty worn out. ( bits of it I/we still get a lot of enjoyment out of). Been giving blood for the last 30 odd years so organs don't seem too different

I like Winja's comment - only those that are prepared to share should be able to recieve. And maybe it should be one of those unwritten biker laws, that you must be a doner. They call us organ donors anyway, lets get the rep for the right reasons for once!

And crazylittleshit - its good that your loved one comes first - otherwise they may not get to at all . . .

Eurygnomes

I'm definitely a donor - and pretty much everyone who knows me knows that I wish for my organs to be harvested at my (sad) demise.

I think a registry would be a good thing (kinda like Medic Alert), as I'd hate to have MY wishes overturned because a family member wishes for my ENTIRE body to go up in flames/rot in the ground. Y'know - cos it's not like I'm gonna NOTICE my cornea's gone.

I wonder how much you'd get for bits and pieces on trademe...

I'd do the organ donorey thing, if one of my family needed it. Dunno bout anyone else though.

You can do what the hell you want with my body when I'm dead, but I warn you now - must of it's pretty ferkd. I reckon the liver's shot, and the rest is probably only good for dog food.

On second thoughts, I like dogs - make me into cat food.

Why don't they just reverse it ?If you DON'T want to be a donor, it's noted on your license. otherwise, assumed it's OK.

My thoughts exactly - you should be able to opt out if you have beliefs that prevent you from being a donor, otherwise you're theirs for the taking! And a little tattoo in an inconspicuous place wouldn't matter to me - maybe under your armpit or *blush* in your groin?

Although it would be hard for me to allow bits of my husband to be taken if he should die before me, if that is his wish, then I should have no say in the matter.

You need another option - definitely you can have what you need when I'm dead AND if a close family member or dear friend needed something I could supply without compromising my own health, it would be theirs. I am an atheist so I don't figure I'm going to need any of my spare parts when I'm dead - and if I am surprised and there is a heaven/hell, I'm sure they'd give you a new set!

Hey Hitcher, I think you missed the real problem here... but leaves you wide open to do another poll.
All those people above, amd who answered 'YES" to the donor thing, now ask you Wife/Partner/Mum/Dad/Significant-other-type-person if they would allow your organs to be donated.
Your after life intentions are all well and good, but almost any member of your immediate family has the ability to veto your donation wishes.
If the people alive don't agree with your donation, there is very little chance your organs will go to any good.
Something to think about.....

Wonko
2nd August 2005, 23:46
It's been on my drivers license ever since I got my full. When I'm dead, they can havest everything from me. I'm not going to be needing it, and I'm more than happy to let someone else try to kill my liver, I'm doing my best, but it just won't die.

I've told my perents this, and my ex's have all know that this is my desire too. It's kinda like karma, I'm willing to do it for someone else, so I'd like to think that someone else would be willing to do it for me.

If it was close family members - I probably would say yes, but no one else.

I kind of got put off exploritory science & organ donation, when my Dad passed away - no sooner had he been pronounced Dead (after a fight with cancer) the head honcho Doc came in to speak to my mum & I and asked if they could ... well basically do an autopsy on my Dad - the thought of that still makes me shudder - and that was 12 years ago now. They did explain that because my Dad had quite a rapid developing Cancer - they wanted to see "What, where and how" it affected his body - Ewwwwwwwe I guess that is the only way they find cures - but NOT ON MY DAD! :nono:

that brings up another interesting topic..

if you were diagnosed with terminal Cancer.. would you go through with treating it ?.. i had a friend of mine in the US with "6 months to live.. but with Chemo.. we can extent that slightly......"

he went through with the chemo, radiation .. etc.. he was a physical mess for 7 months..then he died..

You only get one shot at life, so if people offer you a chance at prolonging it, why wouldn't you? This ain't no dress rehearsal and there ain't no slow-motion replays either. Life. It's a gift beyond price. Enjoy every blessed second of it.

You only get one shot at life, so if people offer you a chance at prolonging it, why wouldn't you?Aah where do I start? Having worked as a RN and done volunteer work in a Hospice, I personal would only wish to prolong my life if it was prolong in such a way as that I would be able to enjoy it. I would not if it meant prolonged severe ill health. Please do not get me started on the euthanasia debate as this would have to go on the Reg Rav thread (which have I no interest reviving or participating in).

watching my mate wither away in severe pain anyway was hard.. he stayed alive 1 month longer than he was supposed to..laid up in a bed..

i think i would rather have the 1 month less and actually be able to do a few of the things i needed to do before i carked it..

Interesting position, my grandmother was diagnosed with (slow-acting) leukaemia about 7 years ago. She decided not to treat on the grounds that all the treatment options sounded horrendous, and really, she'd had a brilliant life to date and would just carry on as long as she could. She should have died 2 years ago.

I think it would seriously depend on the situation I found myself in (personally). Did I have children? And therefore would I want them to a) see me in such an awful medical state or b) see me deteriorate naturally. ANd what if I was working for John Hopkins and had access to new/unFDA'd drugs? Could I use them? The problem with radio/chemotherapy at present is that the drugs can't distinguish between cancerous and noncancerous cells...what if I find an experimental drug that does?

So yeah...while i think the book of questions is a brilliant start point, and can usually answer questions based on moral behaviour and acceptability, I don't think I can answer this one without more qualifiers.
