Since when did VTNZ start failing mismatched speed rating on tyres?:blink::shit:

My car has rear tyres rated V on one side and W on the other, both with good tread and both passed wof last time at the same VTNZ in Albany. Just happens I have a good spare in the boot rated V so not going to cost me anything to change it over.:shifty:

What do you all think of that?

:blink: stupid me hadn't even looked at such things. I can see it would be a problem if you intend travelling at between 240 k/h (V) and 270 k/h (W) :facepalm:

I do wonder if it is full-out from the move to ban mixing snow tyres with other types. Either miss understood by the testing station or typical of a legislation.

They want to have tires that are identical size, ratings and even tread patterns, I had a cut in the side wall of a newish tyre (on the car) the manufacturers replaced it but as the tyre had been superseded (new tread pattren) vtnz wanted to fail it!

Ask to see the relevant rules in the VIRM that state so...

Would be interesting to see if they try that on bikes... very common to run mismatched tyres on adventure bikes... a more knobbly one on the front with something more road biased on the rear...

VTNZ get picky over mismatched tires left to right not front to rear..

in your case put a matching set on the front and the matching set on the rear
jobs done.. as for speed ratings that bullshit unless your taking your ferrai through

But in NZ you are dead if you exceed the speed limit, the TV keeps telling me so therefore it must be true, and there are no speed limits that allow you anywhere near those speeds

I've actually heard of this before and it's cross axle, so the front & back can be different but the 2 front & 2 back must be the same otherwise bikes would be fucked from the start as most if not all run different sizes between front & back.
This (if true) also makes space savers illegal to use

Speed rating only has to be above the speed limits, the load rating is what you get failed on. Speed rating can vary across the axle as far as I can read (I've got bad eyes, but it doesn't seem to say otherwise)

not anymore!! i pissed and moaned loud and long enough apparently and they changed it to "speed increases the risk" not speed kills.
