Can you guys tell me in plain english, the differences between the KTM 690 SM; 690 SMC and 690 Enduro?
I realise they look completely different, but the SM and SMC in particular, appear to be the same bike if you're with me?
Also I have read that the drz400sm is now discontinued, what has it been superseded by?
(Thinking of a change of scene from sports bikes, am considering KTM super duke or 950/990 sm too.)
Thanks in advance.

690SM was a very normal road going mid weight bike. Wouldn't really call it a motard in the traditional sense, more a supermoto.
The 690SMC was more aggressive, less weight... basically less friendly and more wild...
When I rode a 690SM it was fun, but I was on a ZX10 at that point and it felt too ring ding ding for me...
Incidentally, I ended up moving to a 990SM from the ZX10... that was a pretty mental bike, wheelies in 3rd gear :innocent:
If you want it (bit old now) here's a 3 way comparo I wrote in 2008: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/81857-2008-KTM-990-SuperMoto-vs-990-SuperDuke-vs-Triumph-Speed-Triple

Hey thanks for that. I ride a zx12r and had a go on my mates 690 sm and you're right about the ring ding ding. There's a ktm990sm for sale at Superior Motorcycles in CHCH.

I think it should be around the $12-13000 mark myself, plenty of newer bikes out there for less, I realise that there aren't many of them but so what? Most bikes halve in value after 3 years, well the ones I've bought have!
(Just seen the 3 way comparo after I typed this reply-thanks)

Should have wanted one beginning of last year when I was selling... bought at $24k, traded at $8k or something...
63,000km in just over 2 years might have affected resale :innocent:

690 SM or SMR is the soft "road" motard, I've ridden one, it was gay and totally put me off KTM 690s. I wondered what the fuck the fuss was about. And let's face it, even a mother couldn't love the look of the thing.
Recently rode a 690 Enduro and a 690 Enduro R with an Akrapovic and tune. Chuck 'em in "race" mode, twist the throttle and hang the fuck on. They're BARKING mad. Once the tach hits 5K they go apeshit. Comfortably cruising at 160-170kph is not a problem. Completely dispelled my preconceived notions of what a big single perfomrs like. An SMC is essentially a 690 Enduro with different suspension, wheels and brakes. Fucken COOL with a capital C. They're like a 990 SMR or SMT except without the high weight and insane speeds. Simply put, get one.

I fucken wish! I work in a KTM dealership and a really good customer of ours was kind enough to let me try his new 690 Enduro R for the daily 30 kay commute last week. Then we traded a 2009 Enduro on Saturday and they'll never pry my hands from the grips. The new model's definitely better but at 18K it's an expensive chook chaser. They're literally crazy to ride, just make sure some soft cock hasn't "mapped it back", there's a little dial hidden in a water proof boot under the seat with settings 0-9. I think from memory 0 is shit fuel setting, 1 is mild, 2 is race and 3-9 standard. At least that's what the note under the seat tells me on the 09.

The customer you speak of wouldn't happen to be a guy who had an accident and ended up in hospital recently, would it?

and it rocks...
its a 2008 690E, and I got with both enduro wheels and 17" motard wheels as well. It's been mapped, exhaust, airbox, lots of litle tweaks...it still absolutely rocks,...I've hit 160kph...on gravel!... yet you can ride normally and not feel too hard done by, if you need to slab it on the tarmac. My mate bought a new Aprilia RXV550 (not SXV) and he still can't out drag me, cant be me top speed me, can beat my mpg...and he is dirty on it! - he's just coughing out $2K to get akra and map's which I think should make the difference.
With my bike I put the motard wheels on, and didn't like the way the geometry changed plus I spend more time on the dirt that on roads...so am selling the rims and spokes off.
It accepted that the 690E can be made into a 690SM, but is expensive to go the other way.
