I was looking forward to this round ‘cause rain was forecast … and I like riding in the wet! As it was meant to be raining I was aiming to keep it smooth, improve the times and keep it upright. After the morning talk with the other Moto Academy riders and Steve Bagshaw it was time to get to business.
Qualifying:
Sitting on the dummy grid I was picturing in my head what I wanted to be doing to get a good time. I was using the Q-Starz GPS to see my lines and what I could improve to get better times. I did a couple of laps but the bike wasn’t feeling right so I pulled in. My lap times weren’t picked up so I had to start from the back of the grid in 13th next to David Neal (#43) who also didn’t qualify.
Race 1:
The conditions were a bit mixed for our first race. I really wanted to get a good start and keep up with David into turn 1. I ended up nearly bogging the start but made up a couple of places into turn 1. I pulled in at the end of the first lap, the bike wasn’t going as it should be. Better safe than sorry.
During lunch Alex Hockly (Ride Life) changed the jetting on my bike and the fuel that we were running, hopefully it would go better now.
Race 2:
The track was a bit damp but I wasn’t fussed. I lined up next to David and watched the lights go out, another goodish start making up a couple of places into turn 1. The bike was feeling heaps better than before and I was happy with it. I was just riding with myself this race, getting my head in the right space (I know a bit late in the day for that!) and focusing on what I needed to do to improve. I finished 3rd with a 1.38, not what I was hoping for but I finished.
Race 3:
This was a wet race. We had a bit of a fuelling error in the pits before I went out, but I got out the gate on what was left just in time! I got the best start I have ever had, at first I thought I jump started ‘cause I was going through the field faster than normal. What I was doing seemed to work! I went through turn 1 quite a lot of places ahead of where I qualified and right behind David. I passed 1 more bike going through turn 2 and kept up with the front group for that lap. I went through turn 1 on lap 2 faster than I thought I could and passed David going through turn 2. Going into the esses I went around the outside of Aaron Hassan (#42 prolites) when the front overloaded when the gas cut off ‘cause the fuel tap wasn’t on reserve and I crashed. Was a good race until then.
Overall it was a mixed day, more downs than ups but that’s racing and you have the odd bad day.
I would like to thank my sponsors and supporters: Ride Life, Moto Academy, Victoria MCC, Heidenau Tyres, DP Brake pads and Wiz Knee sliders.
