View Full Version : Do you have a manual or info on a 1991 Toyota Starlet

Got a buddy with a shite car, won't start and run properly, if it does start after 5 mins of cranking it runs but will backfire up thru the carb once in a while and is rough as. could be idle circuit or general dirty carb eh

I'm in need of a service manual on pdf or something if anyone has? 1991 Toyota Starlet i think

or maybe some info, think ill clean the carb for him if I can, have been looking around the ignition side of things too. it already has a new fuel pump and ignition leads and distributor cap. rotor looks ok.. acceptable resistances all around except the coil which may be suspect or my readings are suspenct will double check it. it still sparks tho and once u do get it running and build up the revs a bit its sweet, will rev from like 2/3,000 up to redline once its going. but very very hard to start, and get idling.. once its going if u set the idle fairly high it will keep running by itself. anyway short end of it is that it needs some looking at and help and I'll need a manual i recon.

at the least what is the engine code, google has suprisingly little info avail, its a 1000cc engine I think, havent had a decent look at it yet trying to get info/service manual first. and maybe like min compression spec and recommended float/carb settings.. someone has been playing with 2 screws on the carb to previously.. one looks like straight idle adjustment not sure what the other one does.. air screw or maybe another fuel screw..

Check the valve clearances, and the cam timing. Check the brake booster vacuum line for a leak. The that hose off the manifold and suck/blow on it, make sure the one way valve is working. Set the idle as low as it'll still run at, then turn the mixture screw till the revs top out, then repeat that until it stops making a difference. You have to know the simple shit is right first. Given that, double check the ignition system is assembled correctly (plugs gapped and right plug to right lead).

Put a Weber on it!

Clean out the carb.
You should have two screws on the side of the bowl (drivers side), un-do them and get a suitable screw driver and you can get the jets out if you're careful (the jets about 20-25mm past the hole)

On the back of the carb on the drivers side will be several vac operated bits of shit, one is the auto enrichment for the choke, should have a vac line going to the thermostat housing on a stupid little fitting.
Check that. They do tend to split the diaphragms and piss petrol down the intake, usually ends up in cyl 1.

Check all the vac lines, they're probably half rooted.

Undo the screws on the auto-choke unit (that just controls the air, the enrichment heap of shit does the petrol) and turn clockwise, or anti clockwise to change the spring tension in it (the spring gets heated up, makes the choke turn, fucking stupid idea)

Do all that after checking your timing of course lol
They do tend to get sediment floating around in the float bowl and it blocks the primary jet 90% of the time.

I hate the carbs they have on them, over complicated junk.

Tow it up Baldwin street, aim for the bottom and let it go, double points if it makes it all the way down

it doesnt even start now so I have the carb off.

I want to clean the idle circuit but the carb is a bit larger n looks more complicated than any bike carbs i'v worked on.. would love a manual or diagrams or something..

I want to clean and set up the carb all round and try get it going that way or at least eliminate dirty carb as problem.. someone has turned a couple adjustment screws on here too.. would liek to know some base settings. cant find a manual anywhere.

as for the rest. have measured lead resistances, coil resistance, plugs are new, leads are new anyway, dizzy cap is new, fuel pump is new. yet to check compression. car was running fine, just wouldnt start one morning when very cold..

If you ignore all the shit on the sides of the carb, they're simple...
Should be the same as the late 80's early 90's 5e and 3e carbs, similar to what's on a 4AF.

carb is off and in my shed bro, I'm going to need your guidance obi wan..

It looks complicated as fuck.. I need to clean it, I recon its dirty..

I had car running yesterday, once left it idling by itself for few mins then shut it off, the restard was very hard but got it going a second time, idled and revd fine by itself.

today had another go, wouldnt start for aggggesss, finally after minutes of solid cranking it started firing.. got it idling just but not by itself, u basically had to floor the accelerator for it to idle like a lumpy cam.. but yea.. somethings up.

I took carb off and plugs off. I may need to take some photos, there are some nipples/nubs that I recon should have vacuum lines but don't there are at least 2 or 3 vacuum lines going to the carb tho that are connected plus an electrical plug/connection. plus throttle cable plus choke cable.

sigh, I get nothing out of this apart from the experience :D and the satisfaction if I fix it

cleaned the plugs??

will do bro, they were new plugs less than 500km running - but I was just told that him and some old fella tipped 2 stroke fuel down the carb to try get it going the other day... that must have helped alot :)

plugs are wee bit black, could just be from rich running/2 stroke I recon just clean them up with sand paper n use em again?

Manual/auto choke?
The wires could be anti diesel solenoid.
On the drivers side, there should be two flat head screws, pull them, smash heaps of carb cleaner in, shake it all about etc, hit with biggest hammer you can fin...um...
I haven't played with one for quite some time

lol, gutted.. googled various key words cant really find any decent info to help me pull it apart and clean it, but a bit of ur help im sure it will be sweet.

manual cable choke

carb isn't on the car now, dont u need the car running to pull the carb cleaner thru it?

I was going to pull it apart on my bench tmoro - I am led to believe there is an idle circuit in the carb, is this seperate from the pilot and main jet?

im sure the whole thing just needs a damn good clean and I need to reset the 2 screws I know have been fiddled with.. one is just throttle stop or whatever. the other im not sure.

will get into it tmoro and update/ask more relevant questions.

lgoogled various key words .

Did you try the model and make of the carb which should be on the body of it somewhere, rather than "shitbox starlet carb"

I'm not sure if you'd do this, but here's how I cleaned the one on my 4AF Chlamydia/Corolla.

Took carb off.
Undid the uppermost portion (bunch of screws, take the rod off the choke plate

Sit carb (with accel. pump out, that's just at the rear of the bowl side, small plunger thing) in a big bowl of thinners... or just pour thinners over it.

I was drunk. Left it over night.
Worked a treat, thing ran perfectly

well here are some pictures..

Think I read name of carb.. Arsam? and maybe a model number 1j28 or 11B

took some snaps, can't really be fucked taking it apart now looks like a headache..

couldnt see any screws on the drivers side of carb that would undo and reveal jets tho ducatilover

this one above is what would be the right hand side/drivers side of the carb once mounted to the intake manifold in the engine bay.. engine sits east to west.
