Skype isnt free. You need to be careful how you use it. Some of the call costs are worse than cell phones.

According to this guy, it's The Next Big Thing http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20050728.html. When Murdochs News Corp is looking closely, and figures of $US3Billion are being bandied around, it's not just bar talk
also "Skype comes from the people who did the Kazaa peer-to-peer network application that drives record company executives mad while simultaneously loading spyware on your PC. But where Kazaa at one point annoys everyone, Skype just offers peer-to-peer voice communication, sans spyware, for the best of all prices: free. If I have Skype on my computer and you have Skype on yours, we can talk for nothing and the audio quality is surprisingly good -- good enough that 142 million people have so far downloaded Skype, with probably 20 million using the service on a daily basis"

actually I got less lag on 56k than I did on my network (due to some proxy issues)

56k is fine for skype just dont expect wonders.

it would be nice if it had a quality slider in it for highspeed but no.

edit: on exact same setup too. I just unplug network cable and dial up on modem. yes im an it geek

downloaded it a couple of days ago - almost immediately got a prob. with spyware ......... my software zapped it and it COULD have been co-incidence, but .........? are you sure it's OK?

not 100%
they're EULA says they can put shit in it at its own digression. Ill run a scan on it now.

in my geeky opinion, its fine for now. could get worse but at the moment your fine.

Yeah I use it quite regularly to talk to my parents. Works pretty good, have had a bit of trouble with 3 way connections though.

If you need to test it, call echo123.

Skype is great - couldn't afford to live without it. It's free PC to PC but you do pay for Skype Out - PC to telephone.

A Warning - One of the ways in which Skype makes money is by routing PC to phone calls through spare bandwidth - via your PC!!

Check out the txt file in your Skype folder - you'll see a whole host of IP addresses of people around the world having their calls routed via your PC to a local external access point (connection to the PSTN - public telephone network). The way around having people make use of your PC is to switch Skype off whenever you're not using it.

Pyrocam , Skype runs an adaptive codec that will change the quality of the call depending on bandwidth availble packet loss. So if your going between broadband endpoints on the same ISP your quality should be a lot higher.

If you looking are running it wide spread across your work network then you made need to look at prioritizing the skype RTP UDP packets and call setup / tear down packets, this will keep call quality higher with less speech packet dropouts and jitter. If your network is on a single site running switches , then you'll probably get away with no prioritization of skype packets.
If you need to understand more then try this link .

Skype is very similar in the way it works.

My brother keeps wanting me to get Skype and he's a geek - so I figure it can't be all that bad. Not exactly the BEST way to get a testimonial...but unfortunately our work firewall won't allow me to (not to mention I'm not supposed to know the admin password to download and install anything...
