Got an old PC in our kitchen here that I use when "watching" the kids.
It's been turning itself on and off at random times :faceplam:
It's not a boot up issue, because I was trawling for posts to make stupid comments on this arvo and it shut down.
Sometimes it'll shut down during boot up, then turn back on.
Sometimes it randomly turns on...
Or it turns off whenever it feels like it.
What I've done,
Scratched me noggin.
Pulled the box open (hah!), pulled the on/off and reset switches out, cleaned 'em.
Checked by eye for shorts between that and the big thingy it plugs in to (that green board thing)
Put it together with no extra parts (woohoo)
Hasn't turned off on me...yet.
Any other checks I could do?

Time to get a priest and recite the sacred passages to remove the demon from within and have it cleansed with Windows 8 when it comes out.
I use a leaf blower to remove the dust from the box. It could be power supply but that takes work to check using multimeter and checking the rails for the voltage etc. Too much work - chuck the bitch out - get a cheap tablet from china, which I did until import duties are now starting to kick in

Sounds like a power supply or thermal issue. Either way, a good bath will deal to it!

We've only got this old dunger for the Mum/Kids to use.
I might just punch it in the motherboard and get my PC back from up north.
Not interested in tablets, I have my anxiety under control now :bleh:

Oh bugger, I just got the last one to leave, fucker was eating my nut bars.

I was thinking of pissing on it, would that suffice?

Power supply on/off signal comes from the motherboard, probably worth a couple of minutes to unplug and replug all the connectors and see if it's just a dodgy connection.
Otherwise, as above, it has demons and needs to be exorcised.

Download VMWare Player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) and give Linux Mint (http://linuxmint.com/) a try. It's very easy to use and you don't need any experience with Linux to be able to use it.

I was tempted to tow it down the road on the 600, but then I remembered it's speed cutting at 180, so wouldn't be fast enough

Likely power supply or something is cooking.
Go into BIOS, find CPU temp. See if it will keep running BIOS screen for a couple of hours. Tell us all the CPU temp...should be quite low if it's sat doing fark all. Check CPU cooler is attached properly.
Some brands have clever built in diagnostic fings.... what type / model is it?
If it's AMD, throw it in the bin :psst:

I've got CPUID and Speedfan on it, but I stopped giving a fuck this afternoon once I got some work done on my bike, using the PC in our office now.
I don't expect it's a heat issue as it can be sitting there not running for hours and randomly start itself up. I expect there's a short somewhere. It's an old Pentium 4 or something:lol:

I'll fire the air compressor up and blow it out and check for shorts with the trusty multimeter if it happens again :niceone:
