A guy on www.gixxer.com had his bike stolen. The thief advertised it on craigslist, the owner saw the listing and contacted his local police. Result was the police set up an undercover buy and arrested the thief. Turns out he has a history of vehicle thefts, is being held on US$250,000 bail and is facing up to 30yrs in jail. Love it.

A man from the south suburbs put a stolen motorcycle on Craigslist and was arrested after he tried to sell it to undercover police officers in Lombard, prosecutors said Thursday.
Jason Schaffer, 31, of Burnham, was ordered held on $250,000 bail at an appearance before DuPage County Judge Elizabeth Sexton. He is charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Prosecutor Tom Vega said Lombard police, posing as potential buyers, contacted Schaffer after he advertised a 2006 Suzuki GSXR motorcycle for sale online. The ad noted that the bike had no vehicle identification number or title, he said.
Schaffer was arrested after he arrived in Lombard to sell the vehicle Wednesday, Vega said. He said officers determined the motorcycle had been stolen two weeks earlier and that its VIN number was scratched off and painted over.
Prosecutors said Schaffer has prior convictions for possessing stolen vehicles and has served in prison. If convicted, he would be eligible for an extended term of more than 30 years because of his criminal record, Vega said.
Schaffer is scheduled to appear July 10 before Judge John Kinsella.

That URL got truncated, here's (http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20120621/news/706219702/) the working link.
I saw the victim posted in the comments section of the story:
"How dumb can you be.. It's too bad he didn't put a big red bow on it before he drove it to the cops. That would have made my day.. He could have at least washed it for me too."

Umm...15 years ago in Hawkes Bay - I had a Ducati offered to me for a crazy price ('suitable for racing only') nudge nudge.. I had a good idea whos it was so I checked and me and the owner set up a sting with the police.
We got the bike back undamaged but due to the total fuckin incompetence of the police involved I got fingered and got the shit beaten out of me and about a year later got my premises burgled by the perps. That is how it would go in NZ.

No, the owner would be arrested for entrapment of the criminal and also the Judge would have him for court costs .... then there are the lawyers costs to pay for!

Would it happen here? simple answer is no!
Hell here you could probably walk a thief into the cop shop only to be told "they're too busy to deal with it" then have them fine you for "arresting the thief"

It's a shame the thief didn't crash it and die.
It's a shame the thief didn't crash it and die.
So you want the owner to lose his bike?

I'd rather him dead than have my bike back if it were mine... I can get another. Would be better if he didn't die though... snapping his spine rendering him unable to move ever again would be oh so more satisfying. Especially if I found him like that... next to my wrecked bike... would be funny how my eyes would suddenly stop working... wonder how long it would be till the next person found him... hopefully a while, but not long enough for him to die....

There are some pretty fucking stupid ads on Tardme, but I haven't seen one yet where the photo of the bike is actually upside down. It could've happened though.

Insurance should cover it, hopefully.

If the guy ends up permanently disabled then think of how much tax payer money would go to to helping him, in NZ anyway.

Ive always thought getting your bike back after being stoeln and ridden/trashed/modded/whatever by some scumbag would invoke similar emotions to the thought of taking a girlfriend back after she's fucked and sucked someone else behind your back - its lost that special appeal, its no longer sacred.
Its lost its gloss, its was YOURS, now some cunt has gone and ruined it for ya.

so. you all seem to be in consensus about how useless the NZ legal system/police/government are...
who's f*ing doing anything about it?
(my vote is no, that would not happen here)(other fact: digital video can be argued out of court because it's easy enough to forge, if you want something admissable as evidence you need magnetically recorded images/audio)

Who's doing anything about it? The fucking morons who keep voting for the same incompetent fools who continue to make a mockery of criminal justice.
