Long term storage?

Just looking for some quick thoughts:

I have a cyl head, some cylinders from a 4 stroke 4 cyl, and also a crank case, crank shaft etc and all associated bottom end bits of a 2 stroke that I would like to store long term without corrosion or rust etc attacking anything..

easiest way for the backyard mechanic?

if I had a big enough tub I would just fill it with used oil and let them swim in that haha.. but easier storage what can I use.. fish oil or something all over it and wrap it up in a box?

go to the supermarket and buy a 60 metre roll of clingwrap. spray chain lube on the parts, the wrap them in gladwrap.

that should see me right. Shed gets a bit damp but I guess I can keep an eye on them once in a while. Not sure when I will build the engines.. one day

make some plywood blanks that will seal over the crankcase mouths, buy some cheep standard engine oil and fill to the top of crankcase mouth and then fit the plywood cover to keep dust mice small children etc out. DO NOT COVER WITH FISH OIL, this has a solvent in it to make it flow and when this evaporates it sets like a good coat of paint which is what it is meant to do to rust proof internal panels on cars. I have had to work on a engine that had been preserved in fish oil it took two days of cleaning everything before i could realy start, and it included a full strip down to get all the flakes out. Standard engine oil you just drain out. If the area you are storing the parts in can get damp check the oil once in a while, if it goes milky change it.

if you are just storing parts not complete engine sections just spray the parts with clean engine oil wrap up in waxed paper and store in a dry place. If the area can get damp buy a plastic bin with lid and seal the lid on with tape.

Good man, good save from the fish oil - I have used it before to protect a bare metal auto body before paint. I vaguely remember having to clean and re-prep after a bit.

Cheers for all the tips bud, will do!. I'm just going to use old oil, I have a bit of it lying around that I havent disposed of yet. its pretty clean.. most of its come out of my fireblade.

I am storing.. parts and a complete bottom end of an rgv/vj22 engine.. but most of the bits are seperated into their individual parts now.. Clutch baskets, cam shafts and stuff too. A gear box etc.. lots of bits and pieces.
