View Full Version : yeah its a bicycle race...
Peter Sagan, who co-incidentally won stage 3 of the tour de france today, does this massive ride down this mountain in Switzerland, and catches the leader and pips him 150m from the line. Its pretty epic (although, not as epic as Kiwi Greg Henderson's effort in the TDF yesterday on stage 2 - 68kmh uphill on a bike! sheesh - the leader crossed the line doing 80kmh)
but.. check out the dudes on motorbikes filming the ride.. this is a windy, slippery road and the bikes are having trouble keeping up with the cyclists in parts:

I thought I saw sagan (in the lime) get his knee down.
I wouldnt be a cameraman in that race for anything..
Much better ;)
Ironically, recent studies show that bus passengers, motorcyclists and car drivers/passengers suffer more "pollution" from traffic than bicyclists and pedestrians. Bicyclists and pedestrians get "spikes" but the amount of pollution is a lot less.. (they assume that part of the reason is cyclists are fitter and get more of it out of their system through exertion).
So next time you see a cyclist in the traffic while you are on your bike, remember he is getting less polluted than your fat ass.
he is getting less polluted than your fat ass.
No need for personal insults :oi-grr:
How did you know I had a beer keg?

I reckon it could be a bit of fun keeping up with them... fark, he was quite close at times tho  From the vid they're apparently either cops or ex cops... so go figure.
The cameraman definitely had the brave pill tho... you wouldn't catch me doing that...

supposedly they are the same guys who do all the european tours.. I'd love to be the rider.. and then have the opportunity to cycle some of the routes too.. (especially the flat ones :P)

Certainly makes sense. It would be a very intricate dance of knowing which bike is where, if riders are coming up behind you need to get out their way, or pass the cyclists safely if told to, when to pull left or right. I do seem to recall a vid one bike crashing before...
Then factor in that the cameraman is moving around, although they said something about locking himself into the standing mount when they were descending. Several times it looked like the camera was on the grass  I'd actually be quite interested to see what is setup on the bikes to allow such safe movement for the cameraman. And for goodness sake, get them some newer bikes, they'd handle better

I think we're ever so slightly underqualified...

Check the video near the end for how close the motorbikes get to the bicycles... either one makes a mistake...
Here's a vid showing a motorcycle trying to catch some leaders after they dropped another cyclist.

Some of the higher speed sections in other videos show the cyclists hitting 100kph... shit, I topped out at 85kph down a steep hill and that was plenty, back when I was cycling...

yeah.. I suspect I am under qualified lol. I average about 30kmh and my fastest I think, about 80kmh down west rd in clevedon.. I could have gone faster but my cycle computer came off and nearly killed the guy behind me.. so I had to climb back up and get it :P Good news though, I got to go back down again..

I couldn't go any faster than 89ks down the Whangamoas. I have really heavy rims too but shit it was more scary than anything I've done on a moto.
I posted many years ago 'what is the fastest you've ridden a pushie' Some guy replied he was doing about 93ish down haast during the length of NZ race & Steve Gurney was pulling away from him.
Then some guys ruined it by bringing out the vids of ice dropping/ speed records etc
i'd be interested in hearing your stories but only true ones.
