Its mid year 2012 and its almost time to start organising a trip to the SI incorporating the DB1K 2013 in January (pre lim dates for DB1K 2013 seem to be set around the 19th and 20th January).
So the question..who is interrested in joining a SMALL group (max 4 bikes and 4 riders) for an approx. 2 week adventure ride on the SI covering areas such as the Molsworth, Rainbow, Mt Patriarch, The Maling, Edwards Pass, Porika Rd..to name but a few, in the first week heading towards Fairlie, then doing the DB1K, and the second week heading back up to picton, taking in some of the afore mentioned areas, as well as some others not mentioned.
From past experience, the two weeks will cost around the $1500, which includes your gas, modest accomedation (some nights camping at DOC camps or using DOC huts, some nights using Top Ten Holiday Park bungalows) and food.
This year, on concensus of the people attending, we might look at Trailer-ing our bikes down to Wellington and start the ADV ride from boarding the ferry.(this way our Knobblies are still fresh for the SI)
With a lot of organising to be done to make this a success, plans and booking arrangements need to be sorted quite smartly.
Self Motivated, Highly Organised go getters sought.

I did this 2 years ago from Wellington. Didn't do Edwards, Malling and Mt Patriach and Porika was closed due to a huge slip but covered the rest and heaps more, got down to Bluff after the DB1K and back to Wellington in the 2 weeks.

The ride though from the upper Buller gorge up on to the Denniston is
a ride worth doing...comes out above Westport... If it hasn't been closed off by then..

There should be plenty of accommodation in Fairlie...

it's been looked at but I'm pretty sure it will be south again as judging by Ryans workload North is still in the too hard basket to be able to make it compare to South and have no double backing.
Date is expected to be the weekend of the 18,19,20. I tried to get Ryan to update the DB1K website with at least the date but still too busy.
I really want another crack at the southern challenge sections with my the new bike too so I've also been to his house lobbying for 1 more South.

Another option which is really affordable is the Bannockburn Bike Week: http://www.bikeweeknz.com/
$70 for the week of adventuring riding around Otago and free camping oposite the Bannockburn pub.
Looks like theres a week gap between the DB1K and this though, so might not suit everyone. We went this year and had a blast, hoping to go again next year:scooter:

As much as I would love to join you for the two weeks, the plan is to attend the DB1K and do an extended route to and from but document routes for Adventure Guide as I progress. This means my pace will be very stop/start and include talking to land owners sourcing permission info etc, so not ideal for a group ride situation. Once you have your route planned however I would be dead keen to work in joining you for a few days to just ride before peeling off to continue documenting.
I recently put up a good number of articles on mid South Island huts on Adventure Guide (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz), this may be of good help for your route/accommodation planning
Let me know if there is any info you can't find re SI routes, many are yet to be added to the site

Was thinking of doing the DB next year and never been down south so makes sense to take two weeks down there, at this stage would be keen just got a few things to work on, enough holiday, leave pass, just the usual.

Sounds like a very tempting option
Have a rest day  after doing the Dusty then head south for a few days then back to bannockburn. Catch the first 3-4 days of bike week :scooter: before heading north towards nelson

I will most likely be down the south island for most of Jan, should be able to meet up along the way somewhere, will definitely be doing the DB.

How goes your trip planning?
I have near finalised the 10 days building up to the db1k, looking a bit like this.
Milford Sounds
Mavora,
Walter Peak to Queenstown
Nevis to Comwell
Mt Aspiring
Dunstan/Serpentine (challenge section from the db - doing prior to db rather than on the day)
Omarama Saddle (challenge section from the db again) up to Lake Ohau/Hopkins Valley
Mt Cook - Tasman Glacier (Ball Shelter Track)
Tekapo/Godley Valley
Orari Gorge
I have a pretty comprehensive document with all the notes for POI's/tracks/routes to take but that is the basis of it.

We might be keen on joining in for the last day or 2 of your pre ride - we were thinking of coming down roughly via there anyway. A stay at the Macaulay hut is kinda on the list (river levels permitting) as we have never been up there. Will keep in touch.
