View Full Version : Need a ride on a Blackbird

I need a favour from a Blackbird owner around Palmerston North

Just brought a Shoei X-Spirit 2 to replace my old X-spirit 1 and am seriously underwhelmed with it.

One of the major problems is noise, it is horrendous to the extent that my ears are ringing after an hour even with ear plugs in. As it's the middle of winter the neck area is pretty well sealed with a balaclava and neck tube, and all the vents are closed bar the chin vent for demisting (It moves a LOT of air through the vents). Opening the vents does increase the noise level but not by a lot.

I think it's just the way the airflow is moving around the helmet because by moving my head to a different position - up, down or tilt to either side - or placing my hand in various places across my chest or shoulders it quietens down nicely. This makes me wonder if a double bubble screen would solve the problem by lifting the air flow higher, i.e. replicating me ducking my head which quietens things down. I could of course just go out and buy one but having just spent $lots I'm loath to just go out and buy something that might not work.

So the big favour I'm after is has anyone within reasonable distance of Palmerston North got a Blackbird with a D/B screen that they would be willing to let me have a quick ride on to check this out. It only needs to be a short run as it will be very obvious whether or not it works. My 'Bird will be security/ follow me to make sure I'm not an idiot (other than posting this) and several beers will be evidence of my gratitude.

Pretty Please?

Thanks.

There's a member here in Palmerston North with a Blackbird listed as his bike, name is Scruffygit. Ask him. Not sure if its got a D/B screen though.

What ever happened to the word Please? Given the state of this I'm picking it must be delivered with a full tank of gas and tyre warmers on to save the inconvenience of having to warm the tyres up eh?

But seriously; do you think the noise is created by the various air vents about the helmet? I have a ZX12R with a rather large double bubble screen, which directs air to the chest. I used to own an r1150GS and the buffeting on that bike was unbearable! I prefer the air flowing around the helmet, as if you're on a naked bike, it's much more stable.

So, a simple question gets 17 replies - 2 useful, sorry 3, 1 factually correct and the rest a waste of space.

Come on people, if I have to wade through your boorish sniping you could at least make it funny - laugh? I thought I'd never start.

I hate to be Capitan Obvious but just make the shape you want out of cardboard and tape it to your screen. Go for a ride and see if it has the effect you want.

So you quit your job at the helium factory then? You obviously don't like being spoken to in this tone of voice??

Because I've got a Blackbird - sorry it wasn't clear in the original post. I think its just the way the air coming of the screen is hitting me - it's not turbulence because the helmet is very stable - if I try on something else there is no guarantee that I will be in the same position, the air hits in the same spot etc.

It was an XR1100 I wanted but the shape wasn't right, too round. This problem is with ear plugs in and it's only this helmet I've had the problem with - Z1, Arai Astro (Bloody uncomfortable though), X-Ceed, X-Spirit 1 were all fine, this X-spirit 2 is crap.

Thanks for asking though.

True, sorry.

It was written in a rush, also explains why I didn't spot the 'm'

Hopefully rewritten in a more solicitous tone.

Don't think so. All the vents are closed bar the chin vent and closing that only appears to affect the tone of the noise, not the volume. Opening the vents does increase the noise level but not by that much, and it moves a lot of air through the helmet. It's also not buffeting, the helmet is actually very stable. I had a similar problem in reverse when I swapped from the X-ceed to the X-spirit. I had a D/B on the 'Bird then (MRA) that was no problem with the X-ceed, bit more pressure on my shoulders but the helmet was very quiet and stable, with or without a pillion. When I got the X-spirit it was fine solo but with a pillion - TWB, UK size 10 so quite slim - my head was being bounced around. Put the original screen back on and problem solved. Wish now I had kept that screen but gave it to a mate who had had an accident - ambition outweighed ability.

It's just the position I am in and the way the airflow hits me - If I change position (not natural and in some positions outright uncomfortable) it quietens down, If I lay a hand around my shoulders or chest - it quietens down. Even jus leaning on the tank bag has an effect.

And that makes me realise something I haven't tried - take the tank bag off. Be annoyed if that does cure it as its a very handy stash for all my bits and pieces.

I know the three, but I don't think any of them have a D/B. Worth a look and try and blag a ride.

Much appreciated, thanks.

Think you mean Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas?)

Read the post, does it actually sound as if I care if you (generic) insult me or not? Did I sound aggrieved or upset? Or possibly just a little bit bored by it all?

I spent 29 years in the military so have been abused, belittled and generally had the piss ripped out of me by experts so maybe I've become somewhat immune to it all but I do appreciate a good slagging off, even if I'm on the receiving end, providing it's well done and preferably funny.

Still, look on the bright-side, it's getting my post count up. Thanks everyone :2thumbsup.

TSS Red Baron (Lower Hutt) has a blackbird not sure if the screen is what you are looking for. A ride to Wellington and they maybe able to help you out.

Have a look at the bike on the Red Baron website
