View Full Version : The long life of my '99 TL1000S

Just thought I'd share whats happened to my TL over the last 12 years of ownership.

This is the earliest picture I have, taken in 2002. Pretty standard except Brake lines, Two Bros cans, rear hump and polished headers and Rear Ohlins shock.

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/1.jpg?t=1312951237

Here's me at Taupo Motorsport Park in 2008

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/2.jpg?t=1312951441

Let the modding begin!!
This was after installing the Clear clutch cover, rear brake spring and retainer, fender eliminator and FP Racing levers.

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/4.jpg?t=1312951638

Hmmmm Yoshi RS-3's?
This was after trying out some Yoshimura RS-3 cans, putting in the new pressure plate and retainers, some mini indicators and a Galfer rear disk brake.
Didn't like the Yosh cans as they were to quiet and really wanted a full exhaust system to add a few horses.

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/5.jpg?t=1312951715

Naaa Full M4's are better
This was after putting on A full M4 Exhaust system with titanium cans and carbon tips, a custom billet top yolk, front and rear billet brake reservoirs, Power Commander III USB, carbon look mirrors, Billet sprocket cover and Bandit 1200 Nissin 4 pot callipers

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/6.jpg?t=1312951806

A bit of powder coating and some more bling
Added some Carbon fiber heel guards, a Driven gear selector, powder coated the footpeg brackets and fairing stay, got some good ol Trademe footpegs and had the forks rebuilt with new Race Tech internals

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/7.jpg?t=1312951949

Still not happy....Needs the gap mod.
The Gap mod involves removing the black plastic tray under the riders seat, relocating the battery to under the hump, making a tray to retain the boot space and making all the leads and wiring longer. I should have put up some before photos

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/8.jpg?t=1312952066

Don't make your own Gap Tray!!! It's a mission. but worth it in the end
This is after relocating the battery, ECU and Power Commander
http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/9.jpg?t=1312952229

Thanks for the dimensions John (N2Wheelies TLPlanet member)
This is the finished template I made from cardboard for the gap tray

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/DSCF0257-1.jpg

Gap Mod Done
Now there is a large Gap that you can see through below the riders seat, just makes it look a little racey'er IMOHO.

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/11.jpg?t=1312952770

After putting it back together, adding a DRD speedo healer, K2 GSXR1000 rear calliper, powder coating the rear sub-frame, rear brake hanger, axle sliders, rear torque arm and the gap tray, and cutting of a few bits of unneeded alloy on the sub frame.

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/12.jpg?t=1312952854

Needed some new wheels and a hugger
After installing the New Carrozzeria forged Alloy Rims on some new Pirelli Diablo Rosso II's and A Carbon Fiber rear Hugger. I had to make a new bracket to hold the hugger on the right, so made it fancy for the hell of it.

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/13.jpg?t=1312953029

Close up of the home made bracket to fit the hugger....

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/14.jpg?t=1312953168

Add some Galfer Wave front rotors, a Driven 520 conversion chain and sprocket Kit.

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/TL%20Progress/15.jpg?t=1312953254
http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/2-1.jpg

Put on a 07 GSXR 750 front end and a tank protector, and this is how it's sitting today

http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac325/Hrdmanongear/DSCF8284.jpg

Is this the only $25,000 TLs in NZ?

At least for me, I can't tell one sports bike or non-chopper/cruiser from another.

So might be an idea if you explained a bit more whats in the photos? Because I didn't really understand what I was looking at.

Well I understand the parts list.

Whats a gap mod?

Heaps better.

Clear clutch cover is very cool.

One day it'd be awesome if someone made a fully functioning engine, that has clear covers all over.

Mad-V2
14th July 2012, 00:09
Yea that would be different, handy for maintenance!
I've always wanted a V-Twin motor with clear casings and original internals as a display or coffee table that runs on power.

Mad-V2
14th July 2012, 00:13

 Yea wouldn't be far off that but I think there is at least 3 others in N.Z that wouldn't be far off that price tag, or maybe even more.

Jesus christ thats a lot of work. Well done that man. May as well sell it if you've finished and start again with something else ;)

14th July 2012, 08:39
Very very nice:banana:

Have you still got the race tech front fork internals

Mad-V2
14th July 2012, 10:22
Ha Ha yea right, I'll never sell this thing, still got a few other jobs to do on it yet like gut the airbox, 1080 big bore kit, freshen the motor, projector headlight kit, new Bitubo spring on a stick, upgrade the rear brakes again, upgrade the wiring loom and give the paint a re spray. Thats all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure some other stuff will come up.
And if something bad happens before I finish, it will become a beach buggy :headbang:

I do still have the OEM forks with Race Tech internals, I don't really want to sell those but if someone offered me the right price I may let them go.
The Nissin Brakes are a good upgrade aswell but a far cry from the Gixer front end.

Might as well add a bit of chrome somewhere, for the sake of another thing to add to it!

I never really got into chrome on sports bikes, I like the look of raw or polished alloy much better, different strokes for different blokes I guess.

Well you know i love it.:2thumbsup

Same goes with yours Mike, I was referring to your TLS with the high price tag along with Patch's TLR and TLDV8's awesome TLS.
And I know a couple of others who have the modding addiction like Saul for instance.
Would be awesome to get them all together for a good run one summer.

Awesome build, how's the real world performance over stock?

Cheers BigAl, The difference is night and day mate but the ride itself is still just as entertaining.
I might be a bit biased, but ya just cant beat the feel of a V-Twin trying to tear your arms off powering out of a corner :eek5:

Then get something anodized!

Can't be cast though, only machined billet!

Pretty sure he will say its night n day mate, done pretty much the same with mine and the GSXR forks (radial caliper) and lighter rims make an unbeilvable difference, binning the solid as rock rotary damper to.

Mad-V2
14th July 2012, 15:07
Haha quite alot mate, I sold off the parts as I was upgrading, still have a few left though

Mad-V2

Can't be cast though, only machined billet!

There's a bit of anodising on there, Clear clutch cover, pressure plate and retainers, starter motor cover, front sprocket cover, Carrozzeria rims and both brake fluid reservoirs, all are made from machined billet.
As it sits now is pretty much how I like it, the only thing I'll be changing looks wise will be the headlight cover and I'll be changing the rear brake hanger so I can get rid of the torque arm. I'll probably give it a respray at some point down the track too.

Thanks man, appreciate all the feedback.
There's a few things people do to change the look drastically, like high mount exhausts, belly pans or adding a completely different rear subframe.
I like the original styling of the TLS, so I tried to keep it as close to the stock look as I could while updating it as much as I could.

Wicked bike man... How many km's has it done?

Mad-V2
15th July 2012, 13:15
Thanks man, it's sitting on 53,000 at the moment.
I never really commute on it, I mainly just take it out for a thrashing where possible.
It's done about 300 or so laps of the Taupo race track and around 100 of Manfield track so it hasn't been an easy life.

Right I love this bike... very cool. You have done a stunning job.

Seems you are in Aus and this thing is parked up...(where? just asking :innocent:). life is expensive in Aus and maybe your looking to re coop some funds?

Get the hint... is it forsale yet?

Now saying that I am sure I cant afford what you would be asking so I might as well start looking for a TL of my own!

OK I laughed for about 1hr.... well said.

The TL is old and gone burger.. but that is the whole point. Buy when cheap buy and enjoy. Don't be in a rush to sell and what you own will increase in value unlike all the modern stuff.
Suzuki - first Hayabusa and TL are beasts and were refined after there first release. 1999 hayabusa is the one to buy same as the 97 and 98 TL's

EG.. I paid $6500 for my RG500 and was told... YOU paid way to much for that bike...!
Also my GSXR1100 86.. same deal, they are starting to go for good cash now. TL was only sold for 4 years but what a bike, it destroyed the resale of my 1992 Duke 900SL, which I had paid 18k for.. It is now 17-18 years old its close to a classic and dirt cheap. Wont be in another 5years. Oh did I say that any bike over 20yrs insured as a classic costs $9.11 a month! yea!

2. Front forks re value etc RT from KSS will be the man for the job and parts supplier for #1.

Later (when bank recovers)
Rear hugger undertail tidy aka cosmetic touches.

Nah, SRAD gixxer will go. 320mm rotors on the TL. So RF won't work.

Sorry if disinformation. Usually they just present different fork lug spacing and run similar calipers I thought. Like R1 calipers fit older 320mm Yams despite early R1 being 298mm from memory of blurb.

Somewhat after the fact but no matter fwiw TLS didnt have 6 pots oem came with previous mentioned 4 pots,TLR might have cant remember but doubt it,6 potters off Busas bolted straight up as i tried a set years back.To fit GSXR forks and use radial calipers spacers and longer caliper bolts needed with the TLS discs.

The r1 is 310mm but the calipers do indeed fit and work with the 320MM disc as long as it on a TZR250 IKT FZR1000 or FZR250 with the single disc.
There is a brembo 4 spot gold that fits that came std on the XJR's and i think TRX's as well in Jap spec.
The other calipers from other Yams like the RZ250's can generally be replaced with Triumph spec Nissians of a certain age.

Which R1? First model was 298mm. I used some calipers on my YZF750SP and people use them on TDMs and just about anything.
I have some Triumph calipers I bought by mistake when I abscent mindedly forgot my Yamaha was actually in Suzuki chassis. Must sell those at some stage.

You are right Dave the later ones with the radials are 310mm.
The guy with all the RD and RZ was building a special ask him if he wants the calipers.

https://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php/45881-Intruder-VS
The thing with he blue spots is not to get the very first model ones with the outside link pipe.

the brempbos for the Yamahas are off a
XJR400*XJR1200*XJR1300
AS far as i know they are the only ones made in 100mm pitch

to get them or the R1 calipers to work with a spoked wheel you need a disc spacer or another 3 model only special offset disc.
