Yes, I have one. It also a 1992 model. I paid $14,000 for it 3 years ago with 92,000 km on the clock. But the current value is probably around $8,000.
I have seen then advertised from $6,000 to $11,000 depending on condition and mileage. I have had a good run, but the gear box needed an overhaul at 120,000 km, apparently a known fault with this model.

No big horror stories about Teranno's,but they are just based on a pick up,not a purpose built 4X4.The TD27 is the best small diesel to come out of Japan I reckon,it's a real diesel, not some car motor - cast iron head, push rod with no stupid cambelt to break or replace, hard to kill...but not impossible.
Change the oil every 5000km,change the oil every 5000km,change the oil every 5000km and it will go forever.

I had a 1993 Widebody 2.7TD. Biggest heap of shit i have owned.
List of faults:
Turbo shot,
Rear Floorpan rusts out(known fault, even a replacement part from nissan)
transfer case shot,
Front hubs cooked,
Head blow up,
Alternater fucked (another known fault)
Cost = $8000
Repairs totaling $3000
Saying all this though, i recokn I got a lemon. All the others I have seen are much better, even drove another the other day, 1998 with 88000km on the clock. Would actually consider buying another, just get it checked out first.

Oh yes - buy a diesel 4X4 and expect to pay huge repair bills.....but you are buying this for serious use right? Reliability comes at a cost.

Is there any thruth to the rumour that new 4WD;s will have wipers on the side windows?
To clear the spit from other road users.

They can't reach that high, and the only motorcyclists that can see into our window are dirtbikers anyway....

I drive a 4x4, hardly ever sees mud and my house is off a small side street. Why, because I fucking can. If I do want to take it off road, no problem, otherwise its briliant for visibility, rides on a cushion of air and the heated leather seats keep my ass warm on these cold winter mornings. Oh yeah, the wife uses it on weekends to go shopping and visiting. Oh I love living in a free country. :devil2:

How did you manage to blow up a cast iron pushrod diesel head ?

Gotta get em reeeeaaaal hot, then the heads crack.I've got a good TD27 lying around here with a stuffed piston after a water pump failure and a big cook up coming up the Sth Wstn to Hilsborough.I was hoping to get a dead Nissan and not a dead Mitsubishi to rebuild.
One big money item for the TD27 is the water pump - it comes complete with pulley and viscous hub, they used to retail for over $500,but now are around $300,still not cheap for a water pump.
So,the dead diesels lying around on my floor are....
Nissan TD27T,complete,but knackered piston, could be reconed for a good price.
Mitsubishi 4D56,totaly blown, with a rod wedged into the block.
Nissan RD28 from a Laurel, just worn out,but pistons are expensive,so cheaper to go 2nd hand.
Ford Escort,1600cc,destroyed injector pump from water contamination. This was out of my 1987 Van...I fitted a 1600 crossflow into it,race cam,V6 geared choke Weber, extractors - I spent 4 yrs trying to get it to run right, the cam was so lumpy it had 8''Hg at 800rpm,10 @1000,so I settled for 12''Hg at 1200rpm.I had a lot of fun sorting this conversion, and it was the best handling front wheel drive car I've ever driven,it was a real sleeper and I would cruise it at 90mph...Pommie speedo.

Talent. headgasket went. Still got the head in the garage. Some of the cracks you can get a feeler gauge in. Funny thing is. It was actually still running!!

Quite a few of the terrano diesels have overheating trouble, both the turbo and non turbo. As long as you keep an eye on it, you will be hard pressed to kill it. Check the rear seatbelt mounts, make sure they havent had a dodgy fix up as no repairs are allowed to that area (unless you have documentation that it was done many many years back), they now expect you to get a new floor from Nissan. Mine set me back some 6,500 in rust repairs, just as well it was a business expense!
Alternators are $800 give or take, has a brake booster mounted on the back of it to make it extra costly.
Engines are good, better than the toyotas. Good trucks really.

5th gear goes 1st as it is suported at one end only..... listen out for it, if ya not sure and you want me to have a look n listen just giz a bell....... shezzzz fancy talking bout cages here

Ohhh now come on........ we had a awesome duel back from the Nelson St races earlier this year...... but we were rather evenly matched I thought... I am a heavy 4x4 high up= bad handling but with heaps a grunt... were as you lack grunt but being a 2x4 and LOWERED at that.... = good handling

Hey D, this is an auto, seems to go OK, but we had one in here that had a faulty speed sensor, I've driven this one, its not too bad for a diesel 4WD I suppose, depends what I can get it for , I'm hoping $4K or under :motu: How much did you pay for yours? The guy who owns it is supposedly a fussy bugger, ex aircraft technician apparently but just looked like another diesel under the bonnet to me.....
Oh thanks everyone for there input, is the Nissan Terrano the better pick for around that year? Apparently the earlier HiLux's are worth steering clear of, oh and never buy a vehicle starting with an "M" so no Mitsi's or Mazda :nono:

Ill back up everything Motu said--As trucks go the terranno is good.
One thing to check --then if ya aint sure get someone else to check.--Around the rear seatbelt floor mount they rust. Its a know WOF issue and used to be really expensive to fix--as in around 2.5k
its cheaper now--around $400 to fix
motu covered off the other stuff but its a lot less common

5th August 2005, 21:12
How come its cheaper now Frosty?

5th August 2005, 21:24
Because the parts are now available to fix them, you can buy the panel required,or at least the panelbeater can.
The Pajero is a bloody good 4X4,the only thing that lets it down is the engine, petrol or diesel, and the only thing that lets the engine down is the owners poor maintenance,if you can find one with a guaranteed service history I'd only be worried, not very worried.....

What do you call a 'earlier HiLux's ' I had a 89 surf befor the Navara.... bloody good beast a 2.4 Turb, went like a haunted shit house... never had any probs with it.
Mitsi, again bloody under rated, top gear for the price.... dont know much bout Mazda.

Our latest mechanic is 5 years ex Miles Toyota, says dont get a Toyota before about 1996, theyre OK but do have some problems, he reeled off some faults but I wasnt really paying attention......

paj's also have a weak gearbox. The problem with toyotas is they go forever, but parts are a mint when you need them.
Being someone who uses these for work, you hear about alot. A collegue in Cambridge has a 2001 Toyota Hilux which has just shat its gearbox. 260,000km ant bad but $3500 for repairs is.
We use Holden Rodeos at work ourselves and they are bloody brilliant offroad but i hate them on road.
Admittatly these are utes not 4x4's but the underpinnings are usually the same.

crock a shit..... its a lack of knowledge Gav,maui rentals used to have 2.4's 500-600,000km out of them.... as for the 2.4TC well a stock one wasent the best set up, they need a biger bore exhust so as to keep the head temp down, they are knowen to damage heads other wise... mine was up to 200k and was sweet as.
ps: people dont know how to look after them ... ie: oil at 5000k max, deisel gets past the rings and into the oil watering it down.... not good.

Don't say that! The early Pajero's used a Toyota trans....and we don't want to rubbish Toyota now do we? When I lost my overdrive I was worried (all those weak Mitsi trans stories) even after 3 flushes the oil looked like engine oil it was so dirty. All my trans experts said no worries, they never sell parts for these boxes, almost impossible to kill the Toyota trans - one more flush and it was ok.The only weak spot is the motor - 4D56 or 6G72/73
