View Full Version : Bugger/phew moment while not riding

Just had one of those moments of annoyance combined with relief. I finally got around to replacing the top bush on my 990 shock. The 14mm socket bolt was surprisingly easy to undo. The pic below shows what I found.

The missing picture is of the 14mm thread - don't know where that is so I couldn't photograph it!! :gob: :shit:

There has been a bit of play in the shock mount for many thousands of kms.... noted when lifting the rear wheel/ swingarm while the bike was on the centre stand. I thought it was just a worn bush.

I was looking around for a replacement bolt during the week in preparation for the work this weekend. Of course being a KTM it's an odd bolt size & I couldn't find one.

Does anyone have one of these bolts that I can buy/ borrow before next weekends' MMMMM ride? (if you have a spare 990 sitting around not doing anything for a few weeks). They don't appear to have one in stock at the distributors so it look like I'm going to have to order one from Austria if I can't find one by other means. I might be able to get something from Auckland but I have to speak to the bolt merchant again tomorrow now I know exactly what I need (the shoulder length was unknown last week).

Spec: 10.2 grade socket head, 14mm thread x 1.5 pitch x 55mm long. The shoulder is 14mm diameter and 28.5mm long.

So. PHEW! Could have been nasty!

So. PHEW! Could have been nasty!

nasty's an under statement if it turned to custard at 990 speeds

the XR will be in the shed that weekend if ya can handle no comfort, no heated grips, fuck all luggage, no lecky leg and a little underpowered compared to the 990 so a back to basic chook chaser:2thumbsup

I've found "The Bolt Shop" in Glenfield on the North Shore to be excellent.

Cool. Cheers Dino. Twofiddy? I can handle everything except the FA luggage, don't think I remember how to pack lightly! :D It'd be great fun & any bike is better than no bike. I hope to figure something out for the 990 though after buying new tyre, chain & sprockets etc for the weekend... I'll keep ya posted...

As the gentleman said, LEGEND! DEFINITELY BRING one if you can. Even if I find one in the meantime I'll still pay you for it or (&) as Dino said I'll be shouting some beers. Timing will be a bit tight for me with fixing and packing but mainly work commitments & meeting up could be a bit tricky so I'll also continue to try and source something here.

If I can't get the real thing but I can find a reasonable temporary alternative then I'll bring my 14mm allen key along (damn it feels like half a kg! ) and swap the bolt over on Friday night. (involves a major pack frame disassembly for my custom frame set up. I have to remove that to access/remove the carrier plate to remove the hand rails to remove the sidecovers - KTM, WHY make it so complicated??? ). Hmmm, it's sounding like a cold dark thirsty job that I'm quickly going off the idea of while thinking more about it ... better to spend time eating, drinking and talking BS!!

This next idea is sounding more and more likely:
If I can't find anything I'll message you through the week to arrange a meet on Thursday. Maybe in Paeroa if you're going through Waihi direction or near Morrinsville on highway 27 if you're going over the Kaimais?? Or even better in north Hamilton if you feel like going the long way?? I still have to work Thursday at this stage but I'll try to get some of the afternoon off.

Thank you very much for your help circuit1.

+1 on a DR!

XR600 Dino. Hmmm, that's very tempting. I don't think I'd miss the 990 power on one of those, I'd be too busy enjoying myself!

Strange how KTM in NZ couldn't source one but Aussie had it in stock all along, seems that someone in KTM's parts department is in need of a swift kick in the slats for not finding the one in Aussie.

Funny you should say that, as I ordered it this morning at 8:30am, KTM call me back at 9:30 and tell me the one they thought they had wasn't in stock anymore (wtf), fortunately after a bit of investigative work and a few phone calls one was found on a dealer shelf in Sydney, so this bolt is on the way now.

Alls well that ends well ah :)

See your point jafar but, nah, it's probably better the way it worked out. If KTM got it in it would probably be in a container all weekend instead of me being in one on Saturday night :D.

circuit1 had to do a bit of work to find one over there to. I seems like these bolts are few and far between. Hmmm, I wonder why? Has anyone heard of any others breaking?

Probably not, KTM's LC8 parts supply is shit, they never have any bolts in stock for anything unless it also fits on a RFS motor.

You guys are doing a lot for comsumer confidence in KTM. Crap bolts, inept parts departments on both sides of the ditch & a willingness to supply only fast moving products that get damaged on racing machines. OH I SO WANT ONE:drool:

You guys are doing a lot for comsumer confidence in KTM. ........

Haha. The reality is that KTM probably would have had the part here in time but being like any business to business scenario there are many more people involved and paperwork and computers at all points giving many more opportunities for a delay (or multiple delays) or for someone to drop the ball. I've opted for what I think is a more definite transaction. Besides, I don't work for KTM, I've just owned the same one for 6 years now and had many astonishingly good times on it, clocked many many kilometers on it, some of which probably would have broken other bikes and spent many hours looking at it in the garage. It is what it is. Hopefully, I'll be out there again enjoying it this weekend.

I don't really care if anyone else does or does not want to buy a KTM as I do not need other KTMs around me to make me feel good. (actually, probably the fewer the better )

Don't forget overpriced ;) That actually applies to pretty much all bikes though. Check out the price & availablilty for the same bit on your bike & get back to us

Since my bike shares a carb with the DR650 I priced out a bunch of the same carb parts from both Suzuki & KTM a while back. There's 1000's of DR's in NZ right? Neither of them had any parts in NZ, KTM were slightly cheaper & Suzuki wouldn't sell the wear prone slide guide separately (sorry you need a whole new carb...) whereas KTM would. This is a Japanese carb too!

Cheers
Clint

Sounds like a good excuse to install an fcr to me, alternately I just so happen to have a spare stock carb if you are interested ?

The point I was making was that KTM said there was no stock this side of Austria, then you found one in their own Australian network.

I agree with you on the price of bikes, in fact the price of most road going items (cars, bikes , vans trucks , etc) . We have been paying through the nose for all these items for so long it seems normal.

I'll go one better. I broke a throttle cable on my CB1300 a while ago, the dealer contacted Blue Wing & they didn't have one, within 5 minutes Blue Wing had called back to say Aussie didn't have the part in stock either & they would have to order it in from Japan. They had the part into the country, out to the dealer & fitted within 5 working days. I didn't get billed for the airfreight, in fact I got my 15% Honda club discount.

Ah, I see the confusion, I meant NZ distributor and assumed they would get it in from Austria if I ordered it.

Anyway, bolt arrived (thank you so much circuit1), job done, feels goooood. A few other bits and pieces are also now done on the bike. As someone on the MMMMM thread mentioned, I might have a glass of wine now. Then get back into some other jobs on the bike....

hows that fcr going circuit1?
