I have been racing for a good numer of years now, and i have not come across this before.
So here is A Question?
At Vic Clubs rnd 3, we arrived with a nice fine day ahead of us, no wind and i senced a light early morning frost. Meaning that track temp would be very cold, and riders were briefed and warned about this as well.
Usually on cold mornings, qualifying is take it carefully, find your grip levels, usualy race one lap times are a little bit slower for the day, then as the temperature warms up lap times get better during the day.
But as i walked around and talked to several riders, at least six or seven after the first race, and these were riders from several different classes, all had set their Personal bests in race one, even the 250cc lap record was broken in the first race. As the day warmed up our times did not get any better.

Did this have something to do with the cool air on the day?

Whats your thoughts on this?

From my understanding, cold air is denser, which means you get more air into the engine (or something) which results in better power?

Cold temps would have affected the grip levels and tyres tho...

Colder denser air expands more which makes things wot go bang go bang better or something like that. Track temp might have warmed quickly in strong sunlight on dark surface.....so you can have cold air but decent track temp. The better riders would have figured out the amount of grip on the warm up lap.

I think the track has had some work

the grip level was good all day I found...me on the other hand after about 4 races was buggered...that explains my decline in lap times over the day :brick:

We monitored track ( and tyre ) temperature all through the day and it peaked relatively early from direct and relatively unobstructed sunlight. But the other variables include what was correctly stated as the effect of air density on engine performance. But also how many riders had their freshest rubber fitted earlier in the day?

In our case ( Choppa and Dion ) better laptimes came in later races in part because of internal setting changes for the forks but also for Choppa tyre compound changes.

Its hard to pick a pattern when there are so many variables.

Cool air, rain washed track, sunlight and fresh riders who had been hybernating for 5 weeks. All that angst had to be released, even your good lady uncorked a PB. Best she take it out on the CBR than you eh? You could hurt yourself trying to keep up.:innocent:

My best time was actually on old tyres with the fork settings changed. When I changed compounds I had too much grip and the bike was pumping but I wouldnt let Robert have my shock to fix it :)

It certainly seemed to be more grippy from the get go, which is unusual for me - I usually find it a bit slippery in the early morning with such a cold start. I am very pleased with the state of the track and only wish it had happened sooner, worked for me!

As for not "improving" through the day - lots of variables as have been mentioned, couldn't really understand why myself to be honest, although riding two bikes and pushing quite hard on both, I just figured I was a bit worn out as I wasn't 100% well.

Certainly looking forward to the next round!:scooter:

Thanks for the feedback, yes i did notice that the track was in good condition and had good grip all day.

Rob, Skip was thrilled with her PB, over the moon she was.

I must say it was also a bloody good day of racing, weather wise and all. Again a well run meeting by VMCC thanks to skunk and all his volunters, big up to you all.

See you all next round.

I think the rear end pumping was ''lurking'' a little on the old tyres ( ? ) but the new tyres certainly exacerbated it. The swingarm and mounting architecture on that new model is clearly different enough that we need to go down a little in spring rate and perhaps also preload and 1G number.
Anyway as has already been said a very well run meeting, but it may be too much to expect similiar weather next time!

Think positive Robert and you might be surprised. :2thumbsup ;)

Hey Russel,

I did My PB on the postie frankinstein bike on the last lap of the last race...... cold air will help if your bike is jetted for it otherwise i think people were confident on a nice day. I didn;t read rob Ts posts but suspenders work better warm also.

If the day is nice and temps rise go harder people!!!

From the results of Race 1, you might have done a better PB if you had started in Race 1 ?

When the temps rise i always go harder, (ask Skip )
