Bit new to needing an outfit to ride, my MTB just requires some free moving shorts - no, not lycra ha ha (Lord I love shorts on my dirt bike too right up until I think about actually riding properly & seeya knee's / burnt legs etc) BUT!

What do you guys recommend - I dont think Im ready for anything too loud - looking at Fox stuff thats kinda cheap is it any good?

Jeans the other weekend was a total fail standing & sitting etc all the time

Cheers

They were running a combo deal on Thor gear on torpedo7 a while might be worth checking out I think it was $150 for pants shirt & gloves

Every time i've seen a special on gear at torpedo7 it's never been in my(m) size. Only xs or 3xl or something like that. They have some good deals though.

I found Thor gear ok for starting out - if on a budget I'd get a cheap pair of Wharewhare trackpants for 20 and spend the extra 40 bucks on a pair of kneeguards.

And a spare set of dry socks for the drive home

Realistically I haven't tried any pants or shirts that have made me say - "wow! that improved my riding" but definitely goggles are better than shades and a good set of pads will seem useless until the first time they save your ass when you fall off

My personal experience is that two pairs of Fox 180 pants, I believe they're the entry level pant, have fallen apart in the crotch after not too much use. Alpinestars from Torpedo7 are going strong. In saying that Astars have ALOT more flex in the crotch making them more user friendly and comfortable.

I'd personally go for darker gear just for ease of cleaning. If you're worried about visibility I ride with a bright colour helmet and camel pack.

I've had 3 brands of pants so far.

Oneil - ok pants, lasted well (rubbed up a bit though). Reasonably comfortable.

Fox 180 pants - shit house. Didn't last, uncomfortable - no give in them and you can't move that well in them.

Alpine stars - best pants ever. They have elastic parts in the pants that make them great to move in.

My only beef with all the new pants is that they have leather in the exhaust side and after you wash them the leather gets really stuffed. So make sure you feed the leather with some leather conditioner.

First pants I got were Scott ones. I still use these now.

I've tried a few other brands but they don't seem to fit me very well.

Depends how you ride but i have to have leather on the inside of the knee or they will be stuffed within a few good months of riding. Alpine Stars have lasted the best for me but i don't know if they are as good as they were. I got some fly gear with leather inner knee sections and they are holding up well. The shirt doesn't really matter to much other then air flow.

Fox gear in my opinion is all shit. It wears out at more then double the rate of other gear especially the boots.

Thanks all, have lined up a 2nd hand pair of near new fancy pants (tried on a few & couldnt really get comfy?) but ordered some of these as well http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=496656504 pretty pricey but heard they ride well so lets see when they arrive

Haul Rd / left hand play area playing on Sunday with some 2 strokes, glad my WR can stay ahead of em - not a fan of that 2T smell ha ha

Might have to head over the river next weekend if weather permits

Cheers
