Welcome mate.
when ya get in from a ride park the bike up go make a cuppa tea then go back to the bike and get a level... works for me.
jump on here its the XR thread whether 650 600 250 its an XR and thats what counts:yes: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/88273-XR650r-owners-thread dont forget some pics

i ride up thompsons track every now and then but after all this rain i'll be staying away from there for a while, otherwise its just west coast gravel.
Patetonga mx not far up the road from you.

+1 what dino said re oil level.;)
Fill to top level mark,
go for a 5min ride,
let the bike sit for about 5min, then recheck level.
It may need a top up.
And don't trust cold oil level checks.

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP:brick:warm the bike up kill it & check the oil straight away add a little bit more where needed & repeat the process until you get it to the right level.
The oil in the frame models need to be checked soon after killing the motor b4 the oil drains down in2 the motor my old XR 400 used 2 take about 3.5 ltrs :eek5:

have ya got the manual?
5 mins idol wont warm it up F all....
Drain all the oil pour back in required amount from manual(mines 1.9l), ride it to my place let it rest for 5 mins while i'll make a coffee and check it then.

unless its a smokey bugga or it's gotta oil leak some where and ya not revving the snot out of her it should use next to nothing between oil changes.
after a weekend away and ive done a fair bit of hi revving stuff i might chew 250ml but thats rare cause im a nana, even put a cute little givi box on it for work:pinch:

i over filled mine the second week i had her:laugh:

some things wrong if it all draining to the motor, unless the 600/650 are different to the 250/400.
i only end up with around 200mls in the motor when its cool

everyone might have a difference of opinion with the oil levels so to confuse you even more:wacko:  but one thing you could do is after you replace the oil with the correct amount from the manual is take note of where level is at after your first run(hot level) and then when its cooled down (cold level)

Yeah, new oil every 3,000km or three months.
I had two XR250's and two XR400's and they're great bikes.
I raced them all, and the only mods I can recall were bush bars and removing the extra little baffle outa the Xr400 muffler.
