A West Auckland man was stabbed in the neck while investigating someone apparently interfering with his motorcycle early today.
The victim was taken to Auckland Hospital for treatment to his injuries which were not considered serious as the offender fled.
Police said that the victim went out of his Te Atatu home about 3am after hearing a noise and found a man apparently interfering with his motorcycle.
He challenged the man, who stabbed him in the neck and fled the scene.
The offender was described as a male Maori, aged in 30s, of stocky build, with facial stubble. He was about 167cm tall.

So if he hadn't have fled, his injuries could be considered serious..??

replace "as the offerder left" with "at the time the offender left".... it makes more sense.
Still a bloody nasty thing. Hope they catch this dickhead and put him in solitary for a week... poor baby might have to go cold turkey as a way of giving up his addition... instead of stealing to feed the thing.
Pisses me right off this does...!

Maybe they are saying that if the injuries weren't serious, then the offender would have hung around to make sure he was ok, and to take him to the hospital if necessary . . .
Wow, my optimism suprises even me sometimes . . .

Wolf, long way to go mate, before you can imitate G.O.D. (the Grand Oral Disseminator). It's not the punctuation of the sentance, it's the context of which it's constructed.

The victim was taken to Auckland Hospital for treatment to his injuries which were not considered serious as the offender fled.
Actually, the thing that confuses me about this (mentally inserting commas to make sense of it) is that the victim was taken to hospital as the offender fled.
Now what this says to me is that either the Emergency services are really efficient in West Auckland or the offender was fleeing for one hell of a long time - probably would have run to Albany by the time his victim got to hospital.
Surely the poor bugger was taken to hospital some time after the offender fled?
Seriously tho'. What happened is disgusting. The offender is a filthy coward and if he gets caught i hope they prosecute for attempted murder - he did, after all, stab a bloke in the throat which has potentially lethal consequences. I'd be pushing to do him for attempted murder.
He could have just run, instead he plunged a weapon of some description - knife, screwdriver, warding file, who knows what - into a vital part of another person's anatomy. He was trying to kill the bloke, pure and simple. His jail time should reflect that.
edit: Finished writing this then saw MSTRS's masterpiece...

Interesting - we had a car burned in the graveyard near our place in Kumeu, Wonder if they got disturbed at the scene of the bike, nicked a car and kept heading West?
Fire was at 3:45am... as me how I know *YAWN*

Eugh!! I hate journalism over this way, the reports are appallingly written. Interesting the way this news came over the radio Crashe (why do you listen to the police reports?) it does SOUND like a car being broken into. More paranoid 'they want rid of us' comment will undoubtedly follow! (tease - since I am going out of my way to educate the cardrivers of my life about the injustices done unto all mcyclists).
The poor guy who was stabbed. Sheesh...you go outside to check that your babe's okay and wham...near death experience. Crazy times. Hope he recovers, and gets enough ACC payout to build a gargre.

And buy a shotgun. On second thoughts, a rifle - scatter pattern of the shotgun would risk damaging the bike. :devil2:

Anyone who goes out to confront some lowlife without "protection" these days is taking a BIG risk.
It does remind me of a customer at a car security company I used to work for. He wanted an alarm installed that only immobilised the engine and triggered a pager, no siren or flashers. After three goes at his car, he'd had enough and decided to wait in the house with the lights off, pager on and basball bat at hand. I never did hear if he got them though. They'd be unlikely to call the cops if he did.

When I was on Jury Service a few years back a Security Guard - weedy looking chap - encountered three rather large members of a certain gang who's response to being discovered was to threaten to kill him. The judge actually felt the need to ask if he felt in fear of his life (what do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 50? Ahh, yes, "Your Honour")
Poor bastard. We wanted to club together and take him out for a steadying drink and a good meal.

tsk tsk tsk
Look - I think an understanding of how the process actually works is in order.
Someone "expresses an interest" in your bike/car/stereo.
You challenge them with something like "please don't do that". At this step it's very important to avoid the temptation to touch them - that's assault
Repeat your challenge phrase, use an assertive, but not agressive, tone to ensure they know you mean business.
If they insist on taking that course of action, walk away and ring the Police. They'll be there as soon as they can pull someone from traffic duty (let's face it, they're understaffed).
Wait patiently and use your time wisely. Note identifying features of the theif, and a list of all items being taken from the house.
It may be prudent to open doors for them as they'll possibly damage something in their hurry to proceed with their entreprenerial activities.
When the Police arrive, remind them what day the burglary occurred, and hand over any relevant details that may assist them complete their paperwork.
File a claim with your insurer and be sure to confirm how much you lose in no claims bonus, and what your premiums are now that you are a higher risk target.
Go to the SPCA and pick up an agressive looking dog.
When the thief comes back for the new goodies (as provided by the Insurance company), club the fucker in the back of the head and set the dog onto his balls.
When brought up in front of the magistrate simply remind them you had to take action because it seems no-one else is able to.
Hope this helps?

And seriously, that advice about the dog is worthwhile. The only time we've been burgled was when we were out of town and the dog was with us. I think every other house in the street has been done at least once.

Trouble is, that "To Catch a Thief" program shows that most dogs are as useful as tits on Batman's body-armour. A number of times the shows resident burglars played with or patted the dogs and on one episode I saw, the bloke actually took the dog because it was valuable.

I had to laugh when my mate got a big mean dog - ''If they can get past him they can have the fuckin bike!'' They did of course, and the dog looked very pleased with himself the next morning....sorry,but dogs don't have loyalty to their owner!

Indeed.
Our dog would initially bark loudly at any strange noises, but once anybody got close to him, he'd be their best mate. I only hoped that any potential burglars were riding bicycles, because the site of them made him go nuts with excitement, hoping to be able to go for a good fast run. A burglar on a bike wouldn't be allowed to steal anything until he'd 'gone walkies' with the dog first.

i have a very large maglite for this exact eventuality.
just in case any intruders need "illumination".
a little less overt than a baseball bat, and easier to swing in a hallway.

One of the dogs I had was fiercely protective of the property while we were on it - protecting the members of her "pack". One night when the dog was outside I heard running footsteps go past the lounge window followed by the dog hitting the gate and barking her head off. What we figure happened was someone was prowling around our yard, the dog saw him(?) and went after him, he ran, jumped the gate and pissed off up the road, the dog hit the gate and sent him on his way with a good, loud "Fuck off and don't come back". It was interesting that she didn't bark until she reached the gate when he had already left the property and was presumeably accelerating up the road.
I wonder what he thought when he turned around and saw a largish German Shepherd silently bearing down on him.
No idea how she would have handled a burglar while we weren't home.

I understand security guards are only allowed to carry a certain sized maglite, can't remember if it's the 4 or 5 cell one, as anything longer is a "weapon" - yet we can buy (and keep at home) larger maglites.
