Hey all,

Checking out a set of wheels to purchase, but have some queries about the forks. The fork seal is split, and has obviously contaminated the pads, but thats an easy fix. The bike shop that looked at it (I'm well out of town) said the forks were leaking due to pitting in the chrome, no mention of the split though... So, I got some pictures to show ya all, and see what you think... They dude reckons the marks you can see feel quite smooth to the touch, look like stone chips to me :pinch: Also, the rear shocks are notorious for being a bit hard, but what costs am I looking at to get it reconditioned?

Cheers!

The bits you can see are dust covers and the seal is inside above them.
Normally new seals and oil in the forks will be about 200. Ask them for a quote to get the sliders rechromed.

Most of the time you won't need to rechrome the forks. Sand down the high spots with 2000grit wet and dry. The tiny divits are not going to leak any fluid.

Thanks Mossy,

Only one seal is gone, the other is still sweet. Worth doing the oil at the same time you reckon? Re-chroming is pretty up there I think, wouldn't bother if that was the case.

they are pitted

or at least they will be when you remove the rusty high spots

technically corrosion actually makes matter, not removes it(its called Iron Oxide)

its only when you remove the rust that the pits are made.

you will be wise to consider replacement or rechroming

Yes these ones are pretty adanced in deterioration and the chrome is dull. Likely also the internal fork bushings wont be pretty. So its pretty close to $1000 to put this right

That looks tike ZXR400L or ZXR250C, so seals are very cheap, bushings are not as easy to find, dust seals are worth pennies.
Do the fork oil, don't be a jew.
I just re-kitted a set of ZXR400H1 forks, pricks to get bushings for

On the money, a 400L. Will pass then, don't have the time/resources at the moment to muck around with that. Next!

Thanks dudes
