View Full Version : Top box - Trade me

Has anyone had any experience with these top boxes? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/parts-for-sale/panniers-luggage/auction-499362653.htm seems a bit weird they'd only be $40 when they're much more expensive elsewhere.
Wondering if anyone has one/seen one/knows someone who had one/has a second cousin twice removed by marriage who's sisters partners cousin had one and it fell off.
Also, is there such a thing as scooter only top boxes or are they all able to be used on both bikes and scooters? (Sorry if dumb question).
I work in a very girly office and they all look at me like I have the plague when I walk in with my helmet, so thinking a top box may be a good thing to get.

Probably ok but maybe have no UV protection so will discolour if left in the sun unless lots of protection product used on it on a regular basis.

Second-hand Givi stuff of all sizes can be found on Trademe. about the same price with a few scratches maybe. If in doubt about the stuff you mentioned ... Dont buy it ...
If the mounting plate for those shown come with it ... and your helmet will fit IN it ... and your bike gets parked in a SAFE location ... do it. With the range of portable power tools availabe nowdays ... a top-box wont last long should any scumbag decide they want your gear. Just dont let on to your work-mates what you did on the last bike run/rally ... they might buy a bike too ...
But I strongly believe your gear be kept safe in your office.
Top boxes can be fitted to any two wheeled vehicle ...
Pic's of said work-mates would be appreciated too ... :innocent:

I'm not sure of other brands, I have only used Givi, but within Givi there is monokey and monolock. They are definitely not compatible with each other, connecting in opposite ways (plates to boxes). I can't remember which is which, but one is meant for smaller bikes/scooters, the other for larger bikes, and there is a range of boxes within each type.
How the competitors connect to Givi plates I don't know, or if they even do. Givi is probably the market leader, but comes at a pretty high price...

I had one of these trunks back in the States. The red button at the base is so you can push it and take it off like a suit case. It came with a plastic attachment base which I attached to the fender of my enduro. Maybe it was not such a good idea to put it on an enduro because it came off when I was flying down a really rough dirt road (my fault). It was really too rough and I was going way to fast so, does not surprise me. It was my fault it broke.. A couple months later they had a recall on the trunk and sent me a new metal attachment base that I put on. I ended up cracking the trunk and it came off a second time (my fault again). I finally just drilled some holes through the bottom of it and bolted it through my fender to permanently mount it. Problem solved, never came off again but, I don't not have the portability option anymore. I now use a zip tie to keep it shut because the lock mechanism just broke when I put my key into it (not my fault).. Also, my last trip the hinges broke on both sides so, I fixed it. I did something...put a nail in it or safety wire..something like that. I don't remember. Other than that, it is great  It was probably on the bike for a good 2 or 3 years. I use to put my helmet in it all the time when I went into somewhere. No one ever messed with it and I was from Vegas which was one of the highest bike theft cities in the U.S. I would not leave it out over night though.
These trunks you will have to do some type of drilling to the rear fender to mount the base plate. It is universal so, if you don't mind drilling holes, then go for it. If you want to use this and don't want to drill hole, you would probably have to find someone that could make a custom mounting bracket for you.
I think if I was riding normal roads I would not have as many problems with it. Just make sure it does not have a plastic attachment base. Like the poster said above, it is only $40 and you should get a lot of use out of it. Just don't expect it to last forever. You get what you paid for. Would I buy another one, yes for that price. However, I am the type of person that can accept the loss after a couple years use. No guarantees it will last that long though.

I had the smaller one on my 250 and it was great. When I got my I got that one. Was great. Worked well.
Then I put it on my Bandit. So this one time going to band camp I may have exceeded the speed limit by a bit, or maybe double. When I got there it was gone. I had no idea it had broken off. There were bit of the mount left.
So if you are keeping to legal speeds there great, even a bit faster than that. Make sure you change the standard mounting nuts for nyloc ones though.

Lozza I have personally bought one of these a few years back and they are good. Not The best but they are water proof and do the job. I still have it in my bike shed to store odds and sods. From memory you may need to shave the entry slots if you don't use their plate to mount.

Even Givi say never to exceed 135, well thats what it says on the inside of my top box, so far it's stayed on well over that even at 180 if I was to go that fast of course:nono:

It's based on a low power to weight ratio ... so it's not too bad as a learner may think. A couple of months more of road experience can't hurt your skill level.
There is a few threads on KB ... with the LAM's list available ...

Don't buy the 250 if you're pissed off with the 125. Buy a real bike, my GN is slightly modified and I'll be happy to get 30hp at the tread out of it...which in the real world is nothing

There will probably be a number on the lock, easy to source a new key.

That'd be awesome (if it is there)! With any luck I will be able to source a new key like FJRIDER said. Fj - where would I source a replacement key from if it is lying around? Any size storage is good storage right? Haha

Most lock-smiths or Givi suppliers.

Had one of these top boxes on the KLR. Cost about $50, which is is about what it was worth. Was ok, not water or dust proof. Broke around the mounting points when riding off road. Wouldn't be too hard to reinforce the bottom with glass fibre mat but got an Oxford bag instead.

My brother and I have one 5 years old 50,000km only problem with mine is the cord holding the lid from opening right back has broken.
My brothers mounting plate broke, luckly we were only 30km from home and a bit of weld fixed it.
Both are water and dust proof
Silicone spray on the catch will stop it sticking

b) I'm not a lesbian
c) Don't think I'd need a harley to help me pull the ladies, I'm sure I could do it regardless of bike.

And most women have no idea about bikes. For all most of them know it's a huge bike!
