View Full Version : German biker looking forward to meeting Kiwi Bikers!

Hey Kiwi-Bkers!
I'll visit New Zealand from Dezī12 to Febī13 with my BMW F650 GS Dakar TT39.
Most of the time I will travel for my own, only for about 3-4 weeks my girlfriend will be with me (she can't get away for so long without quitting her job and that is not an option).
I (we) don't want to do as many kilometers as possible but see the best spots of NZ and meet people with the same interest in travelling by bike, because this is for me the best way to travel along!
So if you like to meet and have a chat about travelling or anything else - not only bike-related, anyway - or to show me the best (gravel)roads in your region, just send an email or PM how to contact you when I am nearby.
And if there is place to put up a tent on your ground I wouldn't mind ;)
Greetings
Nobby
P.S.
Anyone here who lives near Havelock, Marlborough Sounds?
I'm looking for a german couple, they live in Havelock as far as I know since about 10 Years, it's a pity we lost contact but it was nearly anavoidable 'cause of the things that happened in my life that time they left germany...
So if you are from Havelock or nearby, it would be a great deal if you email me, so I could give you their name (I won't post names in a forum without permission) and you could give them my email-address, so they can contact me if they want. (Can't find them in White Pages, are there other registers for telephone numbers/addresses in NZ?)

The Electoral Roll could help you find your friends but they're not online, only in printed form & available to view at public libraries. Enjoy your trip :niceone:

Don't mention the war.
On the contrary, there is little chance of finding a more lively conversation.

Hi Mate, check in to the Adventure-Dual purpose section of this forum if you enjoy some gravel, there are usually a few rides & gatherings organised over summer where you would be welcome to join in.
Check out the NZ FAQ on ADV (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=712784) too.
Will send PM with details, if we are home when you come through Rotorua you are welcome to come & stay.
Cheers

Hi Louie!
Actually I'm arriving in Auckland, planned date is 24th of November.
It would be a great deal if you have a bed for some days, because I probably will have to wait for the arrival f my bike.
(Estimated time of arrival of the ship is 23.11., but usually there is a 2-3 day difference back or forth. In addition the 23rd is a Friday, so even if it is on time, I will have to wait till monday...)
And, of course, if you can show me some good spots of the city, and/or having some drinks together I wouldn't mind ;)
Let me know if this will be OK as soon as you can, please, because otherwise I'll have to book a room...
Thanks a lot!

Hey Oli!
I have a Carnet, about insurance I'm not sure yet, probably I'll get a contract in NZ when I'm there. Insurance is not an obligation in NZ as far as I know, you "only" have to do WOF and registration.
How long will you stay in NZ? Perhaps we could meet on the road and do some travelling together...
I'll be there till end of January, the itinerary is not set yet, depending on weather and how long I stay at the different places...
Ride on!

Hi Nobby,
we'll be arriving in Auckland Jan 3rd spending five days in the north. On Jan 8th we'll fly down to Christchurch where we'll pick up our bikes. (Tanja takes a rental bike, I'm freeing mine from customs). We'll also stay until the end of January. Only fixed date / place is the DB1K.
And no, it doesnt't really pay off bringing the bike for a three weeks journey
Would be nice to meet you somewhere!
Regards

Hey Kiwi Cowboy!
That's great, Otago and Danseys pass is on my list already. I probably accept your noble offer! If no bed is available, the lawn would do it certainly...
With a cbx I wouldn't do gravel rides too... but I don't mind tarred roads, as long as they're not straight, so if you got time we could do some fine riding together.

Huh, DB1K is a bit too hard for me...not speaking of the route itself but of 1000km within two days, 10-15 hours driving per day...
I don't consider me faint hearted, but that would have been fun 20 years ago, younger, stronger, lighter bike...
Nowadays I like to enjoy the scenery when driving more than the challenge of hardcore gravel roads or gravel riding in high speed - at least when it last the whole day...
But: Do you know if it is possible to do the route befor or after the DB1K? The gpx-files are avilable as download in december...
And no, it doesnt't really pay off bringing the bike for a three weeks journey
Well, no...but that's not the matter :)
Sometimes you just want to say::done:
Would be nice to meet you somewhere!

Should be possible to arrange, I'll send you a pm with the number of my mobile and email, so we can get in contact easier then.

Nobby
Ryan has limited the access to the route because a large part goes over private land with no public access. But I think, there are routes of previous DB1ks available in the archive that have less restrictions. You might want to check this out.

Please do so, might also be able to give you some tips for nice routes. We've been to NZ on bikes three (long) years ago.
