Due to events of late I have realized that while we are very progressive in having a modding subforum, we have no central thread showing what customisation work doesn't happen by members of this site. Each one gets it's own thread and it's forgotten in a week or two.
Furthermore some people get a little wound up when of these creations are posted, lamenting that we ourselves do not do enough modding, (I know, funny right?) but I'm getting sidetracked

Ladies and Gentlemen, here is such a thread. Specifically for posting about other cool, funny unusual, and weird customisations

The only restriction is this:

At least ONE piece of/on the bike has to be made, either by the owner, or a shop he/she has commissioned to make or build. Custom fabrication. One off. Bought/Bolt on pieces are fine as long as that is not all the build is.

Anything else goes, any age, any size, any year.

BMW made out of Trade Me and Ebay parts.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p235/rednzep/DSC04085.jpg

My mate made up an alloy triple clamp, modified the fork leg to take a second disc, and some engine raisers, carb mounts....he's good at that sort of stuff.
I cut and widened an SS replica seat, fixed up a very dented tank I got on ebay, respoked the wheels, assisted my other mate rebuilding the motor, made up replica chrome tank panels from fibreglass, sprayed the bodywork with some Kombi red I had in the shed.....and some other bits.
Lots of fun to ride around Puke, HD and Taupo. Not competitive..... seeing as apart from cam and carbs its stock...even has the 1973 pistons...

see the giant disc on the left hand side of the front wheel? . .. .

no? [clicky (http://i.imgur.com/gKU3Z.jpg)] I see a tyre, a spoked wheel and suspension (Girder I think it's called) .

The Lone Rider
9th August 2012, 09:49
No, thats a springer suspension. They have two sets of arms connected to a rocker that the axle goes through. The front set of legs is connected springs, so when you hit a bump the wheel shifts the rocker, and compresses the top set of legs against the springs.

Girder, the whole front end is rigid, mounted with damper springs that are connected to the frame or trees (the whole front end moves up and down when absorbing shock).

I'd be keen to try and make a set. Simple idea, but a hell of a lot of engineering to work out to do well. Google Sugar Bear - he makes springer front ends that are longer than most bikes and they apparently have zero slop in the steering.

And there is no front brake.

suppose with that set up you need the axle central to the fork leg..... but do many of these bobber/chopper bikes get ridden much?
I've been on one run with a hardtail Yamaha and from behind it did not look like an enjoyable ride .....maybe SH 22 was not ideal for it.:innocent:

If I didn't have a messed up right arm and the bobber wasn't a 250, I'd ride it more. Maybe. Depends if the suicide shifter is easier with two functioning arms. But I've ridden it to work, and to the local weekend market.

Cool stuff here.

One reason I post though is.. they advertise that for $10,000 USD and it is basically new except for being ridden to/at the smoke out.

That works out to $12,000 NZD

Plus what.. about $2,000 shipping, and $1,000 making it road legal here.

$15,000 for a new fully hand built custom bike.

Why the fuck are factory Harleys so expensive here. There's a factory Harley on TM, 2nd hand, that from what I can see is a catalog custom and some expensive paint - $60,000

An Ultraglide he says goes for about $23,000 USD.

Don't. UK cars are utterly muntered after 5 Winters. It's a rarity to find one in good nick and the issue is getting worse as the flora and fauna beside UK motorways has now turned almost entirely into what you'd find in your average Salt Marsh. People go on about rotting electrics in Singapore imports. That's nothing to the horror that exists under the average UK vehicle. UK bikes are the pits.

Any budget bike that gets ridden in Winter in the UK and isn't thoroughly cleaned after EVERY ride (That's EVERY ride - middle of Winter -5 outside, DARK, out with the steam cleaner and scrubbing brush and Scott Oiler/WD 40/CRC bike protector EVERY ride) is a mass of furred alloy and corroded mild steel. I've seen an otherwise lovely BMW R1100RS with muffler bolts that are just a lump of rust and have to be ground off at muffler replacement time. A Chinese GN wouldn't last one winter there. A lot of my UK friends run 2 bikes. Their main toy and a Winter hack that gets replaced every year.

New, un-used BMW's. Not used on the salty shitty roads, they're absolutely fine, I know a few people who have imported new. Just a matter of getting BMW NZ to uphold the warranty on them, they get a bit miffed when you go around them and save a massive amount of $$$

Agree in terms of second hand vehicles though, their conditions rape anything :oi-grr:

Yes, I really like the Edwardian period (1910's) feel that's going on for it. I would love to do a similar modification with a Suzuki TU or Yamaha SR (but I can't weld for shit).
The other steam punk bikes that I have seen are not as refined or as balanced color wise (nor do they look like something that you would see from that era). The modifier of the bike probably did allot of research looking into the car models from that era (Ford Model T Speedster) and then based his design off that (I wouldn't be surprised if he found original parts form a Ford Model T Speedster and stuck them on, the head lights look the same).

I'm guessing that would need a different muffler? Wonder if they could gut the original muffler and slide a thicker exhaust through the old one?

I really like this modern take on the classic Kawasaki 250TR (this is the 2011 model). Its got the whole cafe racer feel going on for it. I remember seeing someone riding one of these when I was driving over the Rimutaka hills recently, It popped out in my eyes from the rest of the motorcycles that it was riding amongst. Its a gorgeous looking motorcycle. I want to do some modifications on my own motorcycle, so I'm using this motorcycle as one of my inspirations.

I've decided that I want to re mod my TS into a Cafe racer, the two elements that want to change are the handle bars and the seat. However I just realized after finishing the first model that If I wanted to change the handlebars I would also be needing to be look at changing the light housing and instruments on the front of the bike to the same one's that were on the old school TS models. I need to do something color wise with the seat, I'm thinking of a blue and white gradient. The plan with the tail light so far is to build it into the seat, the seat will also house the indicators.

Silly question... WTF is cafe racer about any of those pictures?

The seat and the riding position (handle bars) at least so far. Its still a work in progress (to be honest it looks more like a scrambler, but I'm cool with that). The challenge I've set myself is to change the style of the bike without compromising its cosmetic style too much, you should be able to still recognize it as being a Suzuki TS.

I'm open to suggestions on what I can do to improve the design.

If you are leaving the side covers off (which I suggest you do) you should go ape shit with a grinder and take all of the mounts off. Would look so much tidier after a touch of paint. Make the area under the seat look empty.

Strokes, Folks, Different etc.For sure... I was thinking about it some more last night, I wonder if it's because Suzuki have retained that styling for so long that it just doesn't look right to me eye without a front fairing. That and custom/naked/street fighter/whatever the latest hip term is, has pretty much run its course in a same old same old way. Frankly that's not surprising, and most of them seem to come about because it's a lot easier to take shit off a bike and bolt an odd looking headlight on that it is to manufacture bespoke fairings. The Taylormade pipe suits it, but the side fairing bits look like it's just another crashed bike trimmed back to get it on the road.

Here's a (semi) naked I'd hit:

Most stupid Busa ever? 1 front calliper with Nitros? Good luck stopping mate...

The fuck is that? Why does his seat and tank jiggle up? I can understand the 'hump' cos it actually opens. And no remote start lag, who gives a shit? the whole point is you are starting it from a distance, so time delay isn't an issue. I can understand the remote start and other nifty phone control things as I plan on doing similar, but with useful stuff like gps position, camera feed, knock sensor, remote horn, inputting GPS location data... but jiggly tank and instantaneous remote start don't seem that practical.
