View Full Version : Olympic rings burned into your plasma TV? Inconsiderate Prime/Sky
Maki
9th August 2012, 07:54
Do you have a plasma TV? Have you had the Prime TV/Sky Olympics on a lot? Have a look at some other material and see if you can still see those olympic rings when there is a light background. If you can they have burned into your plasma display. Hopefully this will fade and eventually go away in time.
I called Prime yesterday and asked them to tone the rings down so that my plasma and others would not have to be showing these rings for the next months. The reply I got was that this was not their fault. It was because of my "settings". I find this very disappointing since it shows a lack understanding and a self centered approach. Their attitude is that it can not be their fault and the customer is to blame. I have had my plasma TV on the same settings for about a year and never had any issues resembling this. I therefore believe that this problem has nothing to do with my settings but everything to do with the fact that Prime/Sky insists on broadcasting material that can damage plasma screens. I find this a remarkably self centered and silly approach since it would be easy for them to fade the rings to a gray similar to the gray of the Prime logo and then no one would have this problem.
Since Prime/Sky does not seem to be a customer service oriented company and it does not seem to want to implement simple measures for their benefit I will aviod doing any business with them in the future and I encourage any others to consider their dealings with this company carefully.
Have a look at your plasma and if you are not happy please call Prime on 0800 759 759 or their email form available from this page.

Grey - white or seal liver puce it won't matter as you will get some screen burn with a plasma. Most modern screens have a setting to remove ot mitigate it by shifting the pixels about a tad.
Yes - the broadcasters could move the logo about the screen every 5mins but they never have....

Either that or its injected by sky and prime can't change it or there is some technical issue?
Best bet is for you is to clean your screen regularly anyway...

You're probably right there, much better technology overpowered by marketing for profit margins.
Haven't noticed any issues with the rings staying on our plasma when it's turned off, anyway I suspect prime just get the feed from whoever supplies it, and it's probably part of the licencing that the rings have to be on the screen.

I enjoy my stick and balls sports, especially when a furry hole is involved but that doesn't involve a TV, Mrs finds porn a turn off which makes it counter productive.
What channels don't have watermarks these days? Therefore if you stay on any channel too long your plasma will suffer. One of the draw backs of Plasma, apart from their power usage and weight.

If it's about delivering audiences to advertisers, then why piss off the audience? Don't you understand that television is really a wankfest about who has the biggest and brightest logo and who secures the broadcasting right to the biggest events? (Look, mine is bigger than yours, essentially).
Just out of interest, where is the competion to SKY TV? Do they have a monopoly on their market segment? If so, is that legal, ethical and desirable? Should they not at least be required to break their business up into smaller units?
For all those who can't afford a state of the art plasma, tough luck but that's the way the cookie crumbles. The world is full of haves and have nots, always has been and always will be.
And finally, no I am not a shareholder in SKY

For all those who can't afford a state of the art plasma, tough luck but that's the way the cookie crumbles.Indeed, that's life... fortunately state of the art plasmas don't suffer from this in any case. Of course, they're hideously expensive and all but out of production. Once the difference between an (admittedly expensive) LCD and a plasma became imperceptible to consumers, that was pretty much the final nail in the coffin... Panasonic was one mob that held out for a pretty long time though. Some people used to get wound up about black blacks, but the reality was that as soon as they used them in an environment that had ambient light, that argument was moot. Gave them something to wank on about though, even if it did make them appear clueless.

It's called the internet and things like TV on Demand (and torrents).
NZ as a whole just needs to raise it's average techno level so blistering fast net and basic computer competence across all ages is common enough that the idea of not having either is foreign.
Your kids kids may see the start of that.

I would think you'd find it's a requirement to broadcast those rings if you're broadcasting the olympics... It's a brand & like all brands it must be advertised! The rings have always been broadcasted.
My suggestion would be stop watching the olympics, I wish they'd just hurry up & finish anyways. I'm waiting on good programming like Doctor Who to return, bloody olympics pushed in-front & forced a delay on airing

 that's not a good test at all, newer plasma's don't run as hot & older or cheaper LCD's can be just as hot.
No, instead a much simpler & easier test just pick up your remote control & throw it at the screen... if it bounces off your've got a plasma, if it embeds your've got an LCD & you need a new one, see simple easy

the interesting thing I noticed yesterday was that TV2 have surrendered. They had scheduled 2 1/2 hours of "prime time" last night for reruns of the least funny show ever made: Two and a half men.
If that isnt throwing in the towel, what is?
I am down to 1 hour of broadcast TV or so a day, and better for it.

I never intended to get into the Plasma vs LCD vs LCD LED debate and I won't. In the end it comes down to your personal taste, but this is what some experts say:

Ah.
Got a 32" (it was "big" at the time) flat/widescreen CRT. Paid $2,500 for it, pretty much top of the line at the time (LCD's were still $5,000 or so then).
It does progressive scan and all that. A couple of digital view modes (100Hz scan and Pixel plus). Fantastic sound.
Basically worth nothing, but so good I can't bear the thought of dumping it (even after having gotten over the "but I paid $2,500!!!" stage).
I can only just carry it around the house by myself, so definitely wouldn't be worth sending anywhere.
I'd maybe drop-off to a (local) KB member...

(I do think this is an example of why we're "using up" this Planet. It's so much cheaper to buy new than fix old, for so many things, we just keep making and making stuff. Did I really need a new 55" Plasma (around two years ago) to replace that 32" CRT? Not really. But I wanted to. So some factory had to make that new Plasma, and the old CRT will get dumped/semi-recycled. Can that really keep going on and on?)
The Lone Rider

If I'm gonna pilfer the local community of their old CRT; knowing the screen size & depth of the unit would be handy. Depth would greatly effect what I may use it for.
Biggest tv I have here is a 25" LCD I was given.
Then I got a 20" CRT in my bedroom and a 17" CRT in the workshop.
If there's a big demand to get rid of them, I'm happy to collect them up and offer them to locals who had their houses destroyed or similar. You would hope any sensible person would have a tv as low priority for purchasing, so a free CRT would probably be a grateful donation.

Now that the rings are burned into my display, does it's value increase? Do I have to apply for a permit from the Olympic committee to operate the unit? The rings have now disappeared and I am happy again. Just out of curiosity, if you have an LED LCD panel, do you have problems with clouding and back light bleed or have those issues been solved?
This is what I am talking about:
"Am I just being overly picky. I went from the c650 lcd samsung which had major clouding and flashlights into the d6500 led unit which samsung did a replacement for me for a fee outside of warranty and this thing is ridiculed with clouding..
Allthough the picture is amazing and the smart hub rocks. Im getting annoyed with taking off work for a tech to come and replace the panel and every time its the same exact crappy look? What do you think I can do, bite the bullet on time and just keep getting it replaced or am I overly picky. Ill post pics later if need be but its about as bad as it can get.
Wondering if anyone else just has had bad luck...guess this was a big ol vent!"
