View Full Version : Sidecar Transport - Feilding to anywhere further north
Pumba

So seems I have managed to track down an old sidecar frame for not to many $, the only catch, the dam thing is in Feilding :weep: making it a logistical nightmare (I made a passing comment about a 12hr road trip and it wasn't all that positively received).
So is there any kind soul (or souls) in the bucket community that is able to help me out? Even if it can be bought further up the island (say Taupo or pretty much anywhere in the Waikato) that would be a great help.

Not sure. That is not the guys name. I had leads on about 4 down that way and this was the cheapest/only one actually wanting to sell. I think it was re-powered with a DT185 engine after it stopped racing and has been used as a kids play thing.

They had a CB125 powered outfit, leading link front and running on mini wheels and slicks, apparently there was 3-4 built by the same guy

I think I know where at least one of those is, current owner very unlikely to sell.

either yours or a lusty built :) he had built 4 of them, his one, alvins, shane smith and coombes, Its not alvins as his is hanging from his roof in the garage, and lusty wouldnt part with his in like ever lol.
Dont recall what happened to smiths chair and the coombes chair is now in marton.
hey it could be Doug Shaliers old chair if its fielding do you recall that one scotty?? the hippy from bulls had a semi decent one if he spent more money on instead of buying drugs it would have been rather quick

...hey it could be Doug Shaliers old chair...
That is the one. It doesn't have an engine anymore, anyone remember what it used to run, one even what it looks like?
Alvin was my contact down there, he knew of 4 chairs, his, Doug's, Terry Lawless, and Shane Vince. He never put a price on his so I suspect he isn't that keen to sell (the engine was sold a while ago so it is only the frame). He asked Terry who flat out said no, I never did speak with Shane.
Seems these older chairs, particularly the better ones, are going to be rather hard (or costly) to extract from the hands of there owners even if the chances of them being used are pretty minor.
So anyone got any ideas for transport north?

Yep I swung on the chair many moons ago, off the top of my head was the kawa k100 motor in it, was a rather good chair, it really suited Kart tracks only chair I had a go on that didnt spit me off lol, didnt think terry (lusty) or alvin would part with theirs, a bit of histroy with lusty chairs as crazy man mite be able to shine a bit of light on, I started up as it was all starting to wind down around here, Alvins one ran a CG125 then to a MB100, he prefered the 4stroke in better but at the time we were running on manfield back track and the 2 smokes seem to be the engines to run, Terrys and Shanes ran TF100s and were pretty quick, Use to be those 3 and crazy mans chairs were the top chairs at the time, Shane also ran a KX500 (I think) in his and did the odd street meeting with it aswell (and Carried 7ft Andy).... you will remember him scotty, Last time I saw that chair out was the Feilding bucket street race.

Sounds like the start of an epic story. Maybe ride the FXR down, drop out the engine, slap it in the sidecar, load the FXR up on the swingers seat and ride home.
Anyone else with any helpful suggestions.

Take two chains down. The run may be longer than on a solo.

I wonder what ever happened to Adam Martins chair?? I swung on that a couple of times but he had problems with going around left hand corners due to fueling issues due to the carb running on the side of the engine (gp125) it was the motor that paul brown from blenhim ran in his solo that the Sales built up, He had a lot of big ideas with it but after a few issues he seemed to give up on it pretty quickly, but was a soild chassis

here's a suggestion for you Pumba.
How about the last Vic round at Taupo?? I know that's a while away (couple of months)...
But maybe it a few of us ask Vic Club nicely we can ride buckets with streetstocks; then someone from down here could bring it up and you could take it home????
Worm: hurry up and get a bucket... If we can get to 10 of us up here; we might actually be able to get it going here in PN again...

Fueling issues with a GP100/125 engine, try a Tillotson HL360A pumper carb. They are 24mm in the venturie and being a pumper don't care about cornering issues. Easy to tune once you get the feel for it and I made good power with the one I tried. Riekens Racing is the place to get one if your interested. http://www.out2win.com/catalog/tillotson.html

on a side issue .... seeing the posters on this thread seem clued up on sidecar racing >>>>> I had a neighbor in Hamilton that had a motorbike/sidecar in his shed, I cant remember his name tho.....he spent years working on modding it and getting it back running again.
Apparently he was in a bad crash on it in a race and lost his leg .. from memory I think his swinger died in the crash or something like that... he was determined to modify the machine and prove he can race it with one leg ..... when we moved away from Hammie in 1995 he said he was almost ready for the test run to see if he can get permissions needed to race again.
Anyone familiar with him or if he got back on the track again??

Know nothing about it nor ever seen him, jelly wrestler would be the man to ask on thoses sorts of things, I only knew people who own bucket side cars and jumped from chair to chair.... only reason being we could fit so many races in a day and some of the swingers cried cramp or were worn out and being the young buck that I was seemed to fit the bill for some people, are couple of times people have turned up with their chairs with out swingers on the hope they could con some of us to help out, has been knowning for someone to have 3 swingers for the day :)
Only bucket chairs from around here that i didnt have a spin on were Alvins and crazy mans chairs.......hint hint lol (from 98 to 01)

Built over twenty years ago, scaled down LCR. Hub centre steering, fully adjustable front and rear suspension , mini rims and tyres and powered by a watercooled mb100. There's some photos of it on one of the bucket sidecar threads.
