View Full Version : Ducati Desmosedici, collectable yet?

Hypothetically, if one could buy a Desmosedici with under 1000kms on it for under NZ$70,000, would this be a good investment? How long, if ever, before they get desirable dya rekn??

They're only worth what someone is willing to pay, and given the recent loss of form from Ducati in MotoGP I don't see a return on investment for at least 20 years. Bear in mind they were conceived when people could borrow money to burn in the living room fireplace, so there may well have been unrealistic expectations around future speculation of collector value. Given that they cost $US72,000 upon release the one you're looking at has depreciated more than I would have expected.
So, 20 years before they reverse depreciation and overtake inflation I reckon.
If you buy it to ride it, it's definitely worth it though.

If I had 70k lying around and could purchase a nice one I wouldn't hesitate. They were desirable the minute they made them!!!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. And for sure it'd waste it round a race track.
But that's not the point.
The Desmosedici is a bonafide GP bike with lights.

Just to keep it real, I'm not going to buy it, but here in Dubai There is one on the market, never been registered, not raced, so it would only be sensible to keep it that way in an investment sense. I'm sure if I owned it, the lure of riding it now and then would be too much to resist!
The other comment I'd make is that the Desmo was made in limited numbers. Every man and his dog will buy a Panigale, who'd blame them? Ergo the Sedici will be the better investment, albeit twice the price.

Investing in something like that? Good time, not long time. Buy it to rape. It's only right. Putting things like that on a pedestal is a bit like religion... imaginary craziness. It's a road registerable bike... it's only good for one thing.... riding. Plenty of customs and one offs that you can use as artwork.

Fucking madness $70K
Me I'd rather spend $10-15 each on a mint Ducati 900ss, old bonnie, Z900 Kawa and maybe one of those BMW's with the bikini fairing and paint with the fogged edges (what model was that?).
Aw shit there is still $20-30k left over for a brand new bike to enjoy. I's think the above will have a combined increase in value over the years above the $70k Ducati. But I'm really just guessing.
Will a Buell be collectable in 20 years?
In 1983 I purchased a new 750 twin Kawa for $3,999- I kept it for 23 years - it was mint but very modified with boxes of stock parts as part of the sale. Had 110,000 kms on it when I sold it on TM. I got $4k. Not bad going.

Dream bike, if money was no object!
If I had $70k to spend on bikes and nothing else then sure I'd buy multiple superbikes instead and use and abuse all of them equally! :)
Its like the cost of an Aston Martin or Ferrari, I'd prefer something more fun, maybe 3 or 4 cars and a couple of superbikes and still have change.
For some people though $70k is like $10k to me......lucky bastards!

And each to their own and all that. But the sort of people that can spend 70k on a GP bike with lights can normally easily afford to. And as nice as the bikes you've mentioned are...if I had the coin...there's no comparison. The BMW you're referring to is the R90S I believe. As far as future value goes...how much does a round case 750SS go for now? 100k? There's your answer.

the thing is they will probably never be a great investment. There would already be a large number stashed away either new or near new for as an investment so when you look in a few years time at the survival rate it will be very high and you won't even have to look a long way for a new one.
what about all the number duke SPS's etc, there was enough produced each year to mean there's just too many around to be unique enough as a serious investment.

I was privileged enough to ride one :gob:, had the race system on it and I can honestly say if I had the money I would get one in an instant, the sound is incredible for a start, the straight line stoke from the V4 at any RPM is amazing. Sitting there having a drink or ten looking at it is always good.
It would be pretty disappointing to own one and have never ridden it though!
Wouldn't want to do much riding out of warranty though!

A few points here then. I really just threw this in there as a discussion topic, dreams are free and all that. There are several here in Dubai and they do sell from time to time, but this one looked like a keeper. I dont think I'd buy the one with the new motor, unless it was returned to the factory for the work!! Sure a round case 750ss was agreat investment 20 years ago, but the question is what would be a good one now?? I have to hand it to the sand monkeys tho, they sure know how to buy toys, watch them get dusty and flick them without a care in the world. Also, they have never been ridden in the rain, and mostly kept in A/C environment. Anyone want an '09 RSV, mint , less than 6000kms, for under NZ$ 11,000? Its BLACK too!

The Desmosedici d16rr is comparible to things like the Honda NR750 etc, which was a proper race based engine unit that the turned into a limited production road bike. The NR fell flat when was released , but are worth shedloads now.
No other L twin Duke compares really as the twins have a large amount of common share parts and the drivetrain is used across a wide range of models.
So are they collectable ?, - IMO Yep, and Ducati italy say that there are 920 of these units left in the world from the original 1500 built

A GP bike that didnt handle ?.......... You'd have to go back a lot of years to find one of those, all of the current crop would be sublime to ride, its just that some are .25sec better arounda race track than others.

With the D16rr its a reversal of the norm where the aftermarket pipes are a cooler set up than the stock ones
I don't know how you sleep at night !!!! ;)

Sorry my bad I must've got the wrong guy.
Well, there was this guy here on KiwiBiker (fairly new), he was an absolute joker and also a kiss-ass trying to look good to everyone, who recently bought a "200kph+" faaarst Italian bike, who also used to post on threads replying to EVERY SINGLE POSTS each with quotes (don't forget the emoticons!!!). He who is also the same guy who's last forum activity date records 4th of January 2014, which also coincidently happens to be your forum first registered date.
Welcome <strike>back</strike> to KB. I hope you don't create any <strike>more</strike> stupid threads.
Haha, EJK is onto it ;). As for the desmo, had a sit on one with the race pipes once, even got to rev it! Beautiful sound. The owner shot up and down past the shop to give us a demo of what it sounded like on the go, sounds real nice. Looks beaut and would handle amazing. I'd still rather have five bikes than the one expensive one.

I've seen it often enough, but I wonder what it's like to do a couple of laps on the back of the two seater with Randy Janola ? He seems to give them one lap to sort of warm them up and then lets rip for the second. (depending on the passenger by the look?).
The stoppies look scary though !
Anyone know the cost to do that ?

Think you've gotta be a somebody or somebody that knows a somebody to get that ride. See him throw it down the road last season?

When I saw Mamola doing the 2-ups at Laguna the first year Hayden won.... he was HAULING @$$! I think it would be a fantastic experience. I got to ride b!tch with Shane Turpin at the Yamaha Champions School on an FZ-1 at Miller ..... even that was pretty cool and he wasn't going anywhere near as fast as Mamola was at Laguna.
On a Desmosedici note..... a guy in my group had one at Autoclub Speedway this August. It sounds silly good!!!! There were a couple of dudes on Panigales..... they sound good too, but not even close to as nice as the Sedici. Dude on the Sedici also had a Gixxer 1000 which he used for most of his sessions. BUT.... the best Sedici I have ever heard was back at that Laguna GP where I saw Mamola doing the 2up. On the pedestrian bridge hearing one go buy below me just before Turn 1 (which isn't much of a turn) was insane!!! You can't see them... but their sound was so distinct you knew what bike was passing by.

Theres a CYCLE magazine feature on that which I still have. Cor blimey. Plus that frame just looks stock: rumour is they were made completely in house with different geometry etc. And it was the days of MAD: no one protested anyones bike because they were ALL cheating like crazy.

Yeah I had that same mag but gave it to Sean Donnelly seeing as he races a street going version.
