Hello all! (GN250 learner/commuter) (Bradles)

Hi All,

I'm new here and new to riding. I've had my learners for a few months now and I'm having a blast.
I'm on a GN250 which is treating me well as a daily commuter and a learner.
So far reading about GN250s on the board has provided a fair few laughs and confirmed what I thought about them (solid learner/commuter bikes that a lot of people look down on because they're solid learner/commuter bikes).
I'm in no rush to upgrade but I'm sure a few people here won't hesitate to try and change my mind :)

I look forward to discussing things, reading things, and learning things on the forum.

You've got a solid little bike to learn on.
Each to thier own when it comes to a learner bike view point.
As a commuter...brilliant, but the mind change will come from you in time, if you start to attend any group rides.
Which I will add is a 'dont do' anytime soon.
Learn to be totally comfortable with yourself first before entering into the idea of being comfortable, riding with others.

I've got your bikes little brother - GN125 and I'm happy. Don't be baggin on the GN's I say. They're fun. And so comfy! I have ridden the partners sport bike. Got a sore butt after like 5 mins.

Yeah I'm enjoying the 250. It doesn't miss a beat and it does what it was meant to do so I'm really happy.

Lozza how are you finding the 125? I tried to find a comparison when I was buying but I couldn't find a straight forward "125 vs 250 here are the differences in performance etc" post or page anywhere.
I settled on the 250 as the price difference wasn't that big and I figured why not have the extra engine capacity but what I have read since seems to suggest there isn't that much in it really.
I've read that the 125 is comfortable enough on the motorway (100+ without too much drama) - is that accurate?

I'm enjoying it quite a bit, it's rediculously reliable and seems to be really good on petrol. I rode my friends 250 and didn't notice a HUUUUUGE difference. The only place you really notice it is when you're trying to go 100 up a hill. I ride over the harbour bridge everyday and it does it at about 90km, (with a lot of throttle love) and it'll happily sit at 100km on the motorway. Not really any good for going much faster than that, but hey thats the speed limit so I'm alright with that.
It's not as slow to get up to 100km as everyone goes on about, I find it gets there with the length of an onramp happily.

It's no good if you wanna pass someone, or if you feel like speeding or racing. But if you don't really give a shyt about that, it's a good little bike..

Does what I need it to really well - Commuter/learner

Just a note - It can get up to 120. But it vibrates a lot, and I don't really enjoy that haha.

I head over the bridge daily as well. Like you say the 250 does 100 pretty easily on slopes similar the bridge (traffic is usually hanging around 70 when I head over in the morning and is at a standstill on the ride home so I don't really have a direct comparison). Top speed wise I don't know what the 250 will do. I haven't had it over 110 and I don't really have any desire to take it over that anyway.

Yeah, I haven't taken it to 120. I've only taken it to 105ish, but the partner took it for a blat on the motorway the night I got it and apparently got it up to about that. It was vibrating enough for my liking at 105 anyway.

Yeah, I find the same thing re the bridge. Works well for me, means I don't feel like I'm holding people up which is good. It's an 80km speed limit anywho.

Well no complaints here. I'm on my restricted now, but had a GN250 for a year while on my learners and a bit after that. Awesome little bikes. Never had a single issue, no matter what was thrown at it. I had once ridden it all the way from West Auckland to somewhere south of Pukekohe and back at motorway speeds one windy as night in heavy rain, was the only one worse for wear after that ride but still have fond memories of that "adventure" :cold:

Was quite comfortable taking into account my 6 foot frame. Used to stick to the limit comfortably and I had gotten it upto 130 kmh indicated on a flat road. Great fun in the twisties out west as well, handling it there was never an issue.

Welcome Bradley,
GN's are much maligned, but have a proven track record for being a 'solid' learner bike. If you are in no rush to upgrade? then dont... you'll know when you are ready to. KB does have a wealth of knowledge among its members, however sometimes 'gleaning' those nuggets can be exasperating..

Thats about where mine tapped out also...was taking it to its new owner about an hour north of here and it took me all of the passing lane (just north of the Marsden roundabout ) to get passed a milk tanker.

I don't split often at the moment and I haven't done it on the motorway proper yet so it's unlikely to be me.
I have a top box and a 'Wine Red' Helmet. I also usually wear bright pink glasses. If all those things come together then it's probably me.

Yeah that's pretty much what I've picked up and I'm in no rush to upgrade. I'm planning on holding onto it for a few years at this stage. While that may raise a few gasps from what I've gathered they seem to be reliable and cheap to fuel up which translates to a low cost all round. Super important when you're not really earning :)

I have also spent time on the Mighty GN- got me to New Plymouth and back to welly in a foul winters storm. They just go and go and go...and cheap as chips to fill.
