I havent bought a road helmet for a long time so im out of touch.
Still wearing shoei xr800
Im down to 3 choices
HJC R-PHA10
Shoei X12
Arai Chaser
Let me know if im missing some good options.
Must be gloss black..
Colour and patterns dont interest me.
I have a loud race helmet but it doesnt suit my road gear.
Also im a bit torn on prices as the top line helmets seem so much cheaper to get from overseas. Some are $300 cheaper.
idd rather buy local but theres a huge difference between 900-1100 NZ or import 600-750 for the same item.

Some people say they are made for each market? not sure though. I know that some places require you to have a NZ safety standard.

Buy it local and you can try it on first. A test ride is even better.

I'd buy the Arai, but it's very much a personal choice based on all sorts off stuff specific to the buyer.
Weather you buy local or private import,,,catch 22 you'll never win mate.

The Arai would be my pick from that lot (only one that would fit my head) have you had a gander at the equivalent Shark helmets?

My race helmet is Shark RSI. Its nice helmet but the chin area has almost no clearance which makes it hard to feed myself lollies while I ride (thats not illegal yet??). I wear it when im not with the wife and stick my race suit on for a road ride over the hill.

Which shop. Can you ask them for a price for size large 59-60 gloss black if you frequent the shop?
We visit Palmy every month or so.

Why would you go to Palmy to buy an HJC helmet? Darbi's are the wholesalers & they even have a branch in Petone. Your local shop can order them if they don't already have 'em.

They're an importer/wholesaler. Every bike shop in N.Z will deal with 'em.

Two blocks from work. I dint even know they were there.
Thanks for the info.
They should have a large pha10 I can try on for size if they dont have black in stock and those prices are better than importing one.

The X12 is the US name for the X-Spirit 2, the US equivalent to the XR1100 is the RF1100. BIG price difference.
I've got both a Shoei X-Spirit 2 (X12) and a HJC RPHA-10. These are my opinions on them, no doubt some will disagree but that's the beauty of an opinion - it's neither right nor wrong.
The X-spirit was NZ bought. A very well built helmet and a lovely place to put my head but it just doesn't 'feel' right and I think it's uncomfortably noisy even with ear plugs in. It used to be said in the UK that you were either a Shoei shaped head or an Arai one. I was a Shoei head for 16 years and they were a beautiful fit but changes to the helmet shape over the last couple of model revisions now means no Shoei fits me well. Possibly a thing to bear in mind if you are thinking of comparisons with your XR800.
The HJC was bought in the UK - I was back there visiting relatives and picked it up for £154 inc VAT & delivery or less than $300 for a helmet that goes for $800 here (To balance things, the Shoei was cheaper here than I could find it in the UK). To replace a helmet - the X-Spirit 2 - I was disappointed in it was a no-brainer.
The HJC is very light but a lot of that is due to the Large Shoei is size 59-60 whereas the Large HJC is 58-59, put them side by side and the Shoei is noticeably larger. Comparatively the HJC-'Feels' flimsy, presumably due to the construction to make it that light - the fit of the lining in the helmet is not as good, the shell flexes more. I have no doubt that the Shoei will last at least five years (my X-Spirit 1 lasted 8) but have serious doubts if the HJC will last that long.
The big thing for me was that the HJC gave me the same snug fit feeling that all my old Shoeis did but the X-Spirit 2 doesn't - It cradles my whole head whereas the X-Spirit 2 doesn't, that feels lose at the sides. I don't have the noise problem I have with the Shoei which was a big distraction, and overall I 'feel safer' wearing the HJC.
As always the fit is the important thing. Buy the best fitting helmet for your head and ignore anyone who says that you should buy brand X or brand Y because it's the "best". Their opinion only and it's not their opinion going inside your helmet.
A couple of other things.
The SHARP testing system in the UK gives the Shoei 5 stars but the HJC only 3.
http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/
As far as I'm aware, Shoeis sold in NZ are designed for the European Market.
Legality of UK/US bought helmets, a question I asked earlier:

What he said. There are about 3 shapes in the big name helmets, USA, Europe and Asia, based on the different head shape.
Basically, you got to try them out to see what actually fits (and if you then know which head shape it is). Doesn't really matter about features if they are uncomfortable.

My race helmet is RSI but the fit is ok all but the chin area clearance which puts me off getting one for the road.
Ill go try the HJC on for size and see.

RSI and RSX Sharks are two different fits. RSI is more like a Shoei fit and RSX is more like Arai fit. I have RSX and totally love it. They are out of production tho but are excellent helmets

My avatar must have distracted you with my previous post. Darbi's are a wholesaler and definitely don't encourage joe public calling in looking for the best price. They supply the bike shops. They might not mind a try-on but that's why bike shops carry stock, innit?

If you look at the stats that helmet is over 1500 grams so cant be the same product. Looks the same.

Yes. ill call in and see if they have the one I want in stock.
They show the rrp on their site and supply all the local shops.
Idd say most of the places I shop at will give me a small discount also.
The one that a previous post links to is not the same model helmet also.
The more I think about it with fit and warrenty the more I would restrict my purchase to fit before buy local on this item.

Had a RSI which was a good helmet, upgraded to an X-Spirit which is an amazing helmet, wrecked that one and got the X-Spirit2 and thats even better.
If you fit the Shoei its a great helmet, if its not the right fit then it doesn't matter how good it is.

Tried on helmets today.
Turns out my head doesnt like the new shoei range most of all in the cheak area and all the shark helmets are too close to my chin (about 10mm) which bugs me.
The HJC R-PHA10 is good fit but in xl 61-62 and not the 58-60 which is strange as my head measures 59.
Also bike shop gave me a price which is alot lower than any for the same helmet online even overseas.

two things
darbis can't give you a price, if the local bike shop hasn't one on the shelf sometimes I've been able to go there and try different sizes on, and then pay for it at the shop, they're a wholesaler only
second point is if you do try a helmet on here, then import one there's a chance you may get a different 'cut' of helmet might be the same size but for a different shaped head, then you're stuck with it.
Helmets aren't worth wearing if they're the wrong size
Try and buy here too many people have been caught out
