Hey Guys, Can anyone recommend a route in Auckland for riding and practice? Just getting prepared for my restricted license test. Cheers

When I did my restricted I rode around central Auckland, although this was on the "old" restricted test.

Went from Quay street up into Parnell, around some roundabouts, back down through a few big intersections and then onto Quay Street.

Only took about 10 minutes.

If you're nervous just practice going through intersections, giving way, stop/starting etc.

There's nothing to it really. :2thumbsup

Thanks for your reply The End, That's almost the route I usually take, but I'm looking for a route that is a fun ride, more like mission bay with longer distance.

Cheers :niceone:

Head out to Maraetai through Whitford for something a little different. Just watch out for the locals during peak commute times.

yeah maraetai, kawakawa, kaiaua, hunua, papakura, auckland is a pretty sweet ride. not so much good if yer "practicing for a test" (and there's some really tight shit north of kaiaua)

what you want is a test-route. from someone who's done one at the station you're booking at.

but if you've been riding for a whilesy it shouldn't be a problem. they don't need to see anything too tricky. just a lot of nodding.

elsewise go the other way, out west. up to huapai pub used to be good, too many 'muters now. unless you take the bac roads.... don buck, scenic drive, etc. else piha, muriwai, karekare, is pretty schweet...

Cheers man, I looked at the map and looks like that would be a joy to ride!

I can vouch for out Maraetai way, on a nice day it makes for one awesome ride. Not too long either. There are plenty of country roads and alternative routes you can take which make it longer too.

I guess it depends what you're wanting to achieve. If you are trying to get more confidence at open road speeds then the above route is good during the day as there is barely any traffic. However if you want "city riding" skills then riding out in the country won't achieve much ;)

On the contrary, I sat my full practical test on the road between Meadowlands & Whitford. Simply enjoying a ride in new surroundings can also do wonders for general confidence, something that is important if you're going to be relaxed whilst being examined.

Coro loop, thats where most aucklanders go to learn a thing or two. Take duct tape.

I'm new here so I'll ask the dumb question...
Why duct tape?

Why not duct tape?
It fixes everything. If it can't be fixed with duct tape, you're not using enough duct tape haha.

Who needs a PhD when you have duct tape?

I have both ;) and looking for companion riders... I really love the maraetai route and explored every side road...got an ax-1 (250cc dual purpose).

Sounds like you should hook up with the OP then. You might have to share your duct tape though.

OP means original poster but in this case I actually meant Bradles, who posted in this tread and appears to be a PhD student who needs duct tape. You two & the OP should organise something - I'm far too old & slow for the likes of you guys.

Vouch for this too, I used to stick to the routes I knew and travel no further. Not only does riding places you haven't been before boost your confidence, but it's good fun getting lost and finding your way back home!

atalagk, Bradles, Merlin;

I'm always keen for a ride, weather permitting of course. So if you are keen to go somewhere for a bit of a hoon let me know. :niceone:

Depends on the night. Harleys to FXR150s, Scorpios, Hornets. We dont care what you ride. As long as it has 2 wheels (dont ask:facepalm:).

Its not about speed. Just a little learning and fun is compulsory.

No, but we have had an ugly trike thing that was 50cc and could only do 45kph.

Well I am definitely! Problem is wifey :angry2: wants me around during weekends so I usually go for a very early ride and return by noon time. I am very busy during weekdays, but when that sun comes out I can usually find some creative ways of staying out of the office!. That means can also do during weekdays, perhaps half a day. So I'll shout when I feel like it...So what would be the best way to contact? My email should be on my profile...

Only just came across this.
One of my riding mates has one (see my album). I have had a ride, and personally I do not like it much. It feels very strange in a corner; goes around flat like a cage which is very confusing to follow on a 2 wheeler. It actually corners very well, but probably leaves a bit of rubber behind. It has a reasonable amount of power, but eats petrol! The girls like them.

Two things it really does do well. It is very comfortable for the pillion, and it does very well on soft sand. It is almost impossible to bog the great fat driving wheel down! Great beach buggy!!

FYI ... Tony

Agreed. I have no use for one either; I just like two of the guys I ride with who each own one.
Spyders do seem to pull the girls if that is of interest!

Oh okay , I just found this after digging into our friend google;

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/getting/motorcycles/approved-motorcycles.html

It looks like that it will come into effect from 1 October 2012 :woohoo:

By the way, the government's announcement of the amendments to legislation, not the government's anouncement of the ammendments to legislation.
