Righty dokey.

Got any ideas for a short HMCC ride?
I wondered if there were any places in town we could use (I thought about next to the Railway line, but I figure that that's illegal?).

dino3310
6th March 2014, 10:42
plenty of areas around the expressway... but i got chased away so that might be illegal too:laugh:
only close place i can think of would be the old mountain limeworks loop, a big truck yard with a few cones could be good for some cornering techniques figure eights etc. maybe to an extreme that mx track up by your place, but that could be an overkill for a newbie, and with no real benefit to gravel riding but would be a bit of fun for the more experienced.
there used to be a spot up past harveynorman in that new area, could be worth a look if they haven't built there yet.

i'll poke my nose around when i ride home after work over the next week.

I was just gonna do a loop for the first ride (Old Mountain Road LimeworksTriboy Road kinda thang).
Then maybe we can have a skills session (riding/bike prep) in the future.

Waikato adv types, your assistance required.

Doing the 42nd with a mate next Saturday, I'm no mechanic but I figured I need to be able to fix a flat if the need occurs, bought a new rear tire, tools, watched a bunch of you tube etc..

I can do my own oil & filter changes but I've never done a tire / tube change.. I get the rear off the Transalp after work today, I broke the bead all the way around on both sides, I started at the valve, I can get maybe 15-20 cms off the rim (on one side) but I'm left with zero room for more spoons (cant even pick up the edge of the tire still inside the rim to work with) thus am unable to get any more off.. any ideas / tips?

Cheers

Mike

Have two spoons in, chose one to work with a third, let that spoon drop back in like you're leting the tyre edge back in; this will give you room/less tightness to use the 3rd spoon.... The 3rd spoon will now be what your 2nd was... Repeat until the tyre is loose.

Make any sence? Someone else will explane better probably... (Well definitely)

Seems my main issue was bad technique (nobody saw that coming right??)

Once I got about 20cm's off one side I pulled the rear of the tire towards me and was able to easily slide the rest off.. Ahhh, the sweet smell of learning :brick:

It seems to have settled down apart from Kieth and the ADVRider Reject from Akld still trying to get a rise.
Pretty boring, actually.

Funny that 2 1L bottle thing, My DR (that Dino also owned once) came with 2 1L reserve fuel cans mounted at the back, as the fuel range is around 500ks on the standard 29litre tank I"m unsure where in NZ you would have call for that :shit:

500 kms my arse......Especially the way you ride 'em
And I owned after Dino...try riding a 1000 km day around the east Cape......You might need it.

I'd take at least part of that as a compliment, I think on the road I get at least 17kpl so thats 493km's with 29L plus a bit in the carb & fuel hose I'd be close, guess I'd have to fit your bottles back on to find out for sure though (took them to cut back weight but will admit they were cute ) and from my last East Cape ride on the KTM after missing a fuel stop I rolled into the gas station with no gas at 350ks (took 22 litres to full on a 22L tank) so am unsure what you'd want the other 100 + k's for ?

Sorry about the other comments, was meant in jest but in hind site a bit mean

PS, DR750 is a great bike and I can see why you did that trip on it :woohoo:

Just checked and according to the manual reserve is 7 litres so you were doing near on 20km/L as you returned (on your Wiakato ADV ride:msn-wink:) meaning you could have ridden another 140ks, total ks before using the whisky and bourben bottles 557ks

Don't worry, I've given up.
This thread used to be for organising rides in the Waikato, but now it seems to be the haunt of trolls and onanists from all over the country.
You guys feel free to continue your cleverness and I’ll rely on the adult ADV site (you know, the one you got banned from for being a trolling dickhead).
In the meantime I could do some thread hijacking here...

I am gonna head North Easter, and the days between ANZAC - Easter...
Have a loose plan to do all of the roads I did a few years ago, including Pouto point, Spirits Bay....for the night, then much of the Kauri Coast and roads few and far between.
I also hope to get to the north end of the Hokianga, small settlement there...
Then there is the ride down the beach at Houhora......(best video to music, that one...) I recall three riders hitting that beach a little while ago. :)
Plus a few others...
Loose plans, but I will be keeping away from local haunts...

Would love to do that again and get right down to Poutu Point and have a go at getting up to the lighthouse but my health isn't likely to be up to it for a while yet unfortunately.

So I left home at 5.30 and there was a thunder storm with lightening over by Te Pahu. On the way in I saw there was another storm coming in from Morrinsville. By the time I got to the gas station on Lincoln Street it was tipping down.

So against my better judgement I kept going to the club. Igot there about five to six and sheltered from what I assumed was some sort of publicity stunt for Mr Crowe's new movie. Much to my surprise in the next few minutes two guys turned up. One was on a 1200GS and the other was on a F650 Scarver!

So I told Murray and Barry that they were now officially hard bastards (well 'ard!), and sent them home.
The rest of you cahnts are wimps...

Went by myself as I couldnt make the group ride tomorrow. Left Hamilton for National Park at 6am - :cold:

After eating at The Station Cafe in National Park I made my way to the start of the 42nd, I was anxious at first to be honest, didn't know what to expect! The first 3rd was the hardest (mountin - owhango direction), the going got easier after that 3rd crossing or so. Wouldnt go the opposite way.. far to slippery and steep for the Transalp!

Met 3 groups of locals on the first 3rd of the track, all in 4wd's, they basically said same thing "You're going the whole way, on that?" One guy gave me a earful on safety, telling me I should turn around as somebody got choppered out last weekend after breaking a collerbone, rich coming from him becuase he looked like he'd just had 3 cones and jumped in this hilux, he and his passenger were wasted as.. Also past 3 ppl on mountin bikes, I know I had a two hundred something kilo motorcycle to deal with but looking at them made me think I'd made the right choice.

What an amazing ride, I really enjoyed it. Absolutely beautiful, not too techinical but a couple tricky bits to help keep your eye in. I was home by 3pm :scooter:

I'm thinking of going down to the No way in Hell enduro at Waipa (wherever waipa is..) on monday to spectate. It's all subject to weather and if I get the final drive re-assembled in time plus a few other things, I should have a handle on the bike re-assembly by thursday night.
Anyway, I'm sure there are some gravelly bits between here and Waipa and there may actually be a plan but probably not until sunday at the earliest.

In hindsight that probably isn't particularly helpful, I promise to refund your deposit if nothing actually occurs. :innocent:

Might give it a ride tomorrow....
I spent over 9 hours cleaning her, lubricating her and replacing some bolts with KTM bolts I have....
One thing I have trouble with, I cannot for the life of me take off the rear wheel?
Stuck big time!

Anyway, lovely bike, also had a side stand issue once lubricated...(funny, wasn't there before)
I had somehow in my dedication snapped one of the wires...(Brown)...
Had to do some re-routing, all good now.

I must say, the motor is spectacular for a LC4 400.
I have one niggle with the speedo. There is a resident spider and web dead, cannot get him out without disconnecting speedo and going through all of that palava..
The thing is, I did thing of drilling a hole and trying to get it out via tweezers? Might just live with it, name the bike.....Incy Wincy....? :)

Hi Nic, at a leisurely pace Kawhia to Port Waikato is around 4 hours.

No difference in North to South or South to North, allthough there are 2 different gravel routes you can take from Te Akau to P/W and I rate them as good as each other.

Add an aerial to the back & put some big blue "POLITE" stickers all over it. Wear a flouro vest. Everyone will behave around you on the road :devil2:

Whatsorta GPS izzat?

Years of experience with navigational equipment lead me to ID that model as a Garmin GPSMap 60Cx. That's also what is written clearly on the front of it in the pic  :Pokey:
Like Rosie's newer 62 model they are good cos they'll do topmaps as well as street routing.

In the weekend I made some sweet jumps with the digger under the pretence of erosion control. Might be summer before the main loop is dry enough to be adv bike friendly again though.

Cheers

Save up those pingers Dino, because i have 2 epic rides planned.

1. Based out of Te Awamutu and including Tokoroa and Pureora forests staying 1 night in taumarunui
( Need some low river levels for this one so maybe later in the spring early summer )

2. Far north ride ( Dargaville ) with a bit a forestry alot of beaches and sand dunes, this would be a 2 nighter and
has some awesome ex international rally roads

Then there is also the dirty weekend in the 42nd traverse that never happened last year plus i have also been planning in my head a coromandel ride finishing at our bach in pauanui.

Dont know who is going to do all the work at home next summer as I plan to be either riding or fishing every weekend to make up for this year.:bleh:

Yay this weekend! The weather looks like it might be a little moist in the morning but ok from lunch on. So far there's 7 riders registered and a couple of maybes on top of that.

Hi Eddie, your website says that there are no petrol stops on the ride until after Klondyke Road, But actually there is 91 petrol available at the port waikato general store.:scooter::scooter::scooter:
