Yep you read right, I have a lead on some track prepped 2010 BMW S100RR bikes that could be had by those interested.
Back story:
My brother lives in the States has worked with the California Superbike School when they visit VIR a couple times a year. They use a fleet of ~30 BMW S1000RR bikes that they purchased brand spanking new from the factory in 2010. They are looking to renew their fleet and therefore need to part with the existing Beemers. The task of selling off the bikes lands to more or less one guy, who also happens to do all the maintenance on the bikes. However, being that he is not a dealer, and he has a full time job trying to keep the bikes serviced and all, doesn't really have time to try and flog off 30 some bikes. So he is definately willing to do a better deal for someone who will buy multiple bikes.
The Bikes:
2010 model BMW S1000RR that were bought direct from the factory and immediately converted for use by Cali SBK School. The are more or less stock with the exception of race body work (I can't remember the make of body work, will find out), removal of lights, R & G frame sliders, Akrapovik slip-on with some bikes having aftermarket rearsets (handful of instructor bikes). From what I understand the road gear is also available if there is interest, but getting the bike registered and WOF'd here in NZ would be your responsibility. They would be imported as a off-road only bike.
Most of you are probably familar with the wide range of students that come to the Cali SBK School, so you can fairly bet that the bikes have seen it all. From people who rarely get it over 6k rpm to those who are bouncing it off the rev limiter. When I rode in a couple of sessions with the students (on my bro's 748 and my first time at that track) I was flying past some students, and in return getting buzzed by other students and instructors. From what I saw though, I would say that the bikes are babied around the track much more often then being thrashed around. All of the bikes have around 20,000 MILES on them (30,000km) and have been repaired using geniune BMW parts for any damage that was done to them. There may be some parts that have minor cosmetic damage that haven't been replaced, but any part that was deemed to be damaged would be pulled off and replaced by a brand new part. The Disclaimer here would be that these bikes most likely have been crashed, run hard, and put away wet on occasion. But having said that, they have also been regularly serviced by a trained mechanic, so draw your own conclusions on their condition.
The Idea:
Assess the level of interest from riders here in NZ to see if it would be worthwhile to make a volume buy and import a number of bikes at a cheaper price then you could ever hope to find a road going BMW and convert it to a trackday/race bike. I'm sure everyone understands the benifit of volume buying and shipping the bikes over here and the price advantages that would offer.
I don't really know what the demand is for a track/race BMW over here, so I'm just testing the waters to see if there is enough interest to start putting some serious numbers together.
Of note, would be a great bike when GW convinces everyone to go from Superbike to Superstock spec for the premier class. :msn-wink:

ok, whats the expected cost?
tail_end_charlie
22nd August 2012, 19:18
Oh yeah, price. I guess that's an important part. Ok, a rough calc that i did for ONE bike came to $15k. Now that probably sounds high, but that is a very conservative estimate, because i don't want to give someone a price only to find out that I've lowballed it. More bikes bought mean a better buy price and cheaper shipping price per bike. If i start to seriously negotiate on the bikes and get quotes on shipping I'm confident that price will come down.

hmmm. im interested.
woth regards to shipping, are you just ringing a company and sorting it that way, or getting someone to help out with a good rate, as that could cut the cost again somewhat.
If you could work out a cost per scale, e.g.
1 bike =15k each
3 bikes 13k each
5 bikes 10k each
etc etc you would probably get more interest.
Ill say it now, Im interested if you can make something work. I think youd get 12 in a 20 ft container easily fwiw.
so as i said, get a better idea on prices, and I might be keen.

Yep, to get enough interest to fill a 20' container and the shipping cost per bike will drop significantly. My $15k estimate took into account $1500USD in shipping, and that could come down a lot if i could ship a container full.
I wanted to see if there was interest in at least 5 bikes before i start running around and getting quotes, pricing bikes, ect.

Awesome.....
I do see a flaw in the plan... Do the importers want the market flooded with S1000R's?
I guess if there is more, then the requirement for spares will be higher, so may be they don't care so much?
Anyhow, as for them being used gently.... Well, I agree.
From Lesson 1 at CSS you are taught how to use the throttle responsibly, and aren't allowed to use the brakes.
From there you are built up overt he course of the day to a level that has a lot of mechanical empathy......
I would much rather an ex CSS bike than any second hand bike of the same milage! And they are low.... along with being well maintained.

That is one thing that I have thought about, but didn't really know how to inquire about that. I don't really want to piss off the BMW dealers here in NZ by bringing in a bunch of bikes at prices they can't hope to match. But then again, the bikes are going to be track/race bikes instead of road bikes, so hopefully it won't bother them too much.

Agreed. But I also wanted to make it known that some of them could have been wrung out a bit by people who know how to ride. I don't want to misrepresent them in any way to anyone who might be interested in buying one.
Any idea on when CSS are likely to begin selling them off?
They are looking to finish the season with them, and then have a new fleet for next year. So I would be expecting them to be used into the October/November timeframe. I wouldn't really be expecting to get them much before the new year. I can check into that and get a more definate timeframe, along with a few other questions I have about them.

yea, I wouldn't worry bout the bmw dealers haha - your just buying a bunch of used bikes, importing them and selling them. One wouldn't be worrying about toyota dealers if importing a bunch of used corollas from japan and selling em as on trademe or something (guess you prob have to be a registered dealer after x amount of vehicles sold)

The Guy who Your talking about is named Will Eikenberry, he's been CSS's mech since they purchased the BMWs. See link http://www.superbikeschool.com/team/
I rode these BMWs only a few months ago.....the pic is me at Miller raceway. The Grey Bikes are the student rental Bikes, the coach ones are the Red White and blue. All of these bikes are DI'd every day - i.e checked over, they are all warmed up each morning prior to being ridden, the level of maintance is very high, particular with replacing parts, in 8 days on track we had one bike with a quick shifter failure, Will replaced it with a new one, reset all the ECU stuff and away we went again, it was not an easy process to do that, but Will sorted it out damn quick.
As track bikes these things would be perfect, to be honest the speed of the USA students I experienced was slower than the Aussie and NZ students, also the way CSS conducts its training days as Aaron Carr stated starts very slowly with NO braking allowed for the first two Sessions. So these bikes haven't been treated anywhere near as hard as a race/track day bike.
There is also ONE coach bike that has the full race CHIP/ECU in it, giving you Rain, Sport, Race and SLICK MODE (slick mode not std)
I can give out limited information on them but have a direct link to the man (both Will and his boss, Mr code himself) if you have any curly q's....

Yep, thats him. I spent a two days working in the pit area with him and was kept throughly entertained by no end of rediculous stories about some of the stuff he has done. Learned a hell of a lot from him in those two day too. But yeah, he's a cool guy.

.
BMW can get fucked, what you are proposing is a bunch of mates getting together to split shipping on some second hand toys from overseas.
really the result is that eventually they might sell some spares to people for bikes that wouldnt have existed here had you not gone thorugh with getting them.

Bike is back to wonderfull and I love it!, it's just a bit too hard on the wee 675 chasing the RSV4 Factorys and BMW 1000's in Bears, then there are the hotted up 999's and 1098's ect, and Bears in Canterbury is the fastest and most hotly contested Bears racing in NZ.
The Beamer would give me a foot in both camps on the same bike.
If I hadn't loaned my GSXR that weekend, Stroud would be current no 1- same set of circumstances now, I would say no, not cause it got crashed and trashed, I would say no because of the lack of gratitude by the pilot. The team owner (Red) was much appreciative though, although it did take him a couple of months too put things right.........
Am assuming you are coming down again for the Sth Island rounds 2013?

You're a smart man, much smarter than me: I just picked up a wee Duc (749R) so it's nice to know how far I'll be in the poo if I take it down there, haha.
Dunno 'bout SI rounds yet, a few things have to fall into place at work.......you on a rocketship isn't exactly filling me with joy either, was hard enough keeping you in sight on that bloody 675! Unless you are entering Superbike.....? (nudge nudge)

Lean on them and make it happen! Took the superbike out to Rua for the afternoon yesterday, first time on it since the endurance race in March - a day later and i'm still grinning!. I would like to have one more bash at National Clubbies on a bike that can match the other superbikes, not yet decided.
Could put you up in CHch if it helped.
749R is a geat bike! bring it to Sound of Thunder 2013, remits are going in to the SOT and CHch Bears to change the class rules to have F2 include 749,748,675,900ss(2valve air cooled), Bears is now stacked with genuine superbikes, especially at SOT, time to split out F1 as it currently stands.
You would love Sound of Thunder, a total EVENT!, that leaves the Nats for dead as a motorcycle occasion:yes:, do it Doug,do iiiiit!:2thumbsup

If my remit makes it in, all the twins below 750, 4 valve or not will qual as an F2 bike.(so will 900 2 valvers)
Read up on the current class rules and put in a remit of your own, if enough people bother we may be able to prod the commitee, just as long as you turn up to vote on the day- if no one turns up to vote, the commitee will rubber stamp the status quo to save the bother.

OUch. Well, battered and bruised is better than a lot of other options. At least you still have your 675, its a sweet bike. Mine's still (scratch that) was road legal, but got backed into and knocked over last night. Busted every piece of plastic on it except for one side fairing, broken front subframe, dented and scratched the tank. The dude who did it though was cool about it, in that he gave me all his info, and contacted me today saying that his boss is filling out the paper work for the incident report (he was in a company vehicle). Not sure whats going to happen with the insurance, but it might get totaled due to the damage............which means it might just become my trackbike.
Good luck with the gixxer, and just lemme know if you hit the lottery. ;)

Good luck with the gixxer, and just lemme know if you hit the lottery. ;)
No worries,
Gimmie a shout if you do turn your 675 into a track bike, there a a few things worth knowing about 675's as a race bike, could save you some grief.

Fuck my brown goat! How many GSXR race bikes does a man need? You greedy cunt :)
I actually do know someone in the market for a race bike and would love a GSXR, I'll send him the details.

whoah, easy! I dont think it was meant seriously. well, maybe.
when I stacked my R1 at the end of levels straight, the FIRST thing I did was pull out my phone and take photos of how far me and the bike tumbled and the damage!
lol that you had your phone on you on the track?.. and its harder to do that when the ambulance is picking you up off the track.. I saw the 2 bikes getting towed in after the off at 'puna... think it was a bit more of a mans crash :D both write offs and looked proper fooked!

Yep, another thing to take into consideration. I going to go ahead and factor it in, just to play things on the safe side.
also consider maf fees etc. They will prolly be quite keen to look at these quite carefully

Cheers for that, I was gonna seek some advice on how and what needs to be modified for it, I know every bike has their little quirks.

maf fees? Not familiar with those, can you elaborate?

Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
They're the ones who make sure goods from overseas don't bring undesirable critters and/or diseases to screw our delicate eco-system. I got charged a fee for decontaminating the 2nd hand exhaust I just bought on ebay.
Bare in mind too, that the GST will be levied on everything they can think of, so they will be charging GST on the freight cost of the bikes..... Bastards. For instance, that exhaust I just brought in was under the GST collection threshold... until they factored in the US$70 freight charge.

MAF, wow, great, another hoop to jump through. Might keep in mind that the bikes need to have a good wash (then a good oiling to prevent corrosion during shipping) so as too make sure there is nothing for MAF to find and decon.
And l think I already did my price calcs with GST on top of the shipping costs, but I'll have to double check. If they try and charge me GST on the value of the shipping crates, however, I might start to get a little pissed.

Not so much a hoop, as they'll be spraying them regardless, but just more cost. But having them spotless will surely help.

the gst is calculated last, and so the gst gets added to any extra fees you have to pay, including the customs and maf fees

I was hoping to get the price of the bikes down and get a better overall price, but I keep running into all the incidentals that make up all the difference and then some.
Thanks for the info anyways guys, better to know this now rather than later.

Welcome to the world of private importing.... sometimes it is just easier to go and pay what the shop are asking...
Not having a dig at you at all, it is just the way it rolls sometimes.
Seriously, i hope you do indeed manage to land some of the CSS Beemers, and some punters can have some fun on them in NZ.
The Borader control will do their best I am sure, just sometimes it is what is best for them....

Hey cheers,
Yeah, the bad luck just keeps on coming!, amazed to have got away with it with minimal injuries, some of the people on the embankment had a view on an angle that made it look like the bike landed on me when it came down and when l didn't move for about 20 secs( so they tell me, no idea!) some of them were expecting another track fatal- gotta wonder at what point do you pull the pin......
But!, alive, mobile and bike in the workshop pulled to bits and well under way with rebuild, might make round 2 yet if customs don't slow down the stuff coming in. Bizzarely, am unable to find a new clutch cable in NZ, none of the dealers have one?

Not having anything to do with your brown goat after you've been there........
Got caught out on a handshake deal selling the 07, had paid for the 09 Triple R bike before being told : can't buy it now, the wife said no, sorry mate.... Tempted to ride it but- what if it got binned or blew up, the wife might make me live outside, she wants the dough back in the household budget.
Reckons she might let me keep some of the dough if it sold to help fix the 09, might be clever trick to make me part with it, actually like it a lot.

I imported a bike last year and the bills just kept on bulding up and building up, still got a bike a whole cheaper then if I got one here though. When I enquired about another import I was told that the rules had or were about to change that makes anything with a fuel tank or engine classed as 'Dangerous Goods' so more charges again. Good luck and before you do anything else call this guy below and ask him. He should shed a lot of light on importing bikes.
Good luck

Interesting article that rings pretty true.
Low boredom threshhold = check
Family that rides = check
Impulsive = check
Stupid = check (oh wait, that wasn't in the article)
Sometime you have to use a stick to prod life a little bit and get it to jump up and bite you, just to keep things interesting.............all the while being pesimistic enough to know that when it does bite you, its gonna hurt like hell. Just gotta be ready for it. :2guns:

Interesting article.
Older brother won't like that. His kids know their mother used to ride, but apparently they don't (and aren't going to) know he used to ride too.... let alone that he rode an RG500 in a somewhat reckless manner. He refuses to even think about getting back into it because he knows what he was like and doesn't want his kids to ever get interested in it. He probably isn't that happy that the rest of us ride now.
Gotta feel sorry for Mum. She's had fair cause to worry about us all over the years..... But we're all still standing... so far.
Maybe it skips a generation, because neither Mum or Dad are remotely interested in Motorbikes.... although I guess Dad is just a wee bit obsessed with his mountain biking.... Just a little.....

Obsessed?!?!? That's putting it lightly.
And yeah, his kids will find out. They always end up finding out, and it will come back to haunt him.
