View Full Version : Resin paperweight?

I want to make one. I have something that I want to encase in resin to use as a paper weight. Anyone know how to? Anyone tell where I can get it done? I have looked at buying the stuff, but it looked like commercial quantities only and also far too, far too hard for this gal.

i think that was last done in the 70's, a craft supply should be able to help with regular sizes?

Repco or Supercheap have fibreglass repair kits, in case you wanna have a play on a small scale. Most panelbeaters could do the encase trick during morning smoko, in case you have some contacts in that trade :msn-wink:

Are you looking for new ways to injure yourself ... ??? Can you be trusted with a paperweight ... do you have mood swings that lead to "things" getting thrown ... ???? (thinking of Maha's safety here :innocent:)

But if HE gives you the OK to pursue this folly ...... check this link out.

If you are only after a small quantity, you could buy and mix a couple of two pot brews of clear epoxy (like araldite for glass)

Just make sure to get stuff that sets clear, the fiberglass epoxy I have sets to a translucent yellow.

Not such a good idea, they frown on encasing that sort of thing in resin.

This sounds like how I would do it. It's just what to use for the cast. PVC pipe? Small mixing bowl? Glass tumbler? Hmmmm.... That could be a fun afternoon project.

I used a honey container for mixing, the taper on it makes prying the resin out easier. Or maybe like 3/4 of a tennis ball or similar, give a nice globe shape.

Maybe use the rose-coloured epoxy from Mega Mitre 10?? :killingme

i think you need a polyester resin as it sets clear. If you get epoxy, it sets cloudy or yellow depending on the mix.

I used some a long time ago.

Epiglass ENCAPSULATING resin is what you require. You can probably purchase in one-litre quantity but another manufacturer might do 500mls.

Depends on what you want to encase too, some things a pain in the arse to get rid of all the air from.:msn-wink:

Have you figured out how to make him stand still 'till it sets? You don't want any air bubbles...

First you need 2lb of asbestos dust, that is what stops any air bubbles.

Viagra and liquid latex will keep it firm and shiny for a while.

I should have been a bit clearer, I would like it to be clear so you can actually see what I have encased in it.

Exactly what I am planning to do, although an ACC claim for OOS is begining to look attractive at the moment. My current employer thnks it is a really good use of my skills to scan and file years worth of rosters, timesheets and invoices. This involves removing staples from tens of thousands of clumps of paper before standing by the scanner watching it do its thing. I have kept a large handful of said staples (my scots boss asked me if I was planning to straighten them) and want to encase them in resin so I can have a work paper weight that reminds me never to waste my time working for a crowd like that again.

Apparently from what I read if you cut the solution instead of stirring it you minimise air bubbles. I will use a bung to block any risky orifices before covering it.

Thanks guys, great way to start my day. Trev, you will keep!

Casting resin. Should be able to get it from a model shop or good craft shop.

Several techniques to eliminate air bubbles in the mix. ...I will PM you later to explain...gotta get to work.

A mate of mine used to do it but I just asked him if he still does "no to hard " It seems to be not worth the trouble Regards Richard

Before you start ... put the doctor on speed dial (if you haven't already) just in case.

If you need some resin then just scrape out your cone.

I'm pretty sure that Nuplex sell crystal casting resin which sounds like what you want. See if you can get a datasheet on it, as it'll give you the conditions for best success. Make your mould a 'split' one. Try something smaller first, as you'll probably need to muck around with technique a bit. I've never tried it, but I plan to, but commonly a blue flame will 'pop' bubbles in resin, as will pouring it from about 200-300mm into another cup. You can also vac the resin in a vac pot to remove bubbles, but you'd probably have to find a boat builder or someone who works with carbon fibre, as you don't need to bother about that with fibreglass.

As always, Google is your friend, there is a whole heap of stuff out there on it

Knot filler, that's what you need. Comes as a 2 pack, 500ml bottles or bigger. I used to get mine at mitre 10. That's what I used to set the stuff into the bar & table in the shop. It stays liquid when you mix it so your mould has to be leak proof. I still have a small mountain on the garage floor from making this discovery. Once hardened it can be sanded down to remove any moulding marks, using finer & finer grades of paper until you polish it back to clear again.
You can get it at marine chandlers too, sealing knots on boats is the original purpose of the product.

Craft shops have kits for exactly what you are going to do. forget about buying 900 litres of industrial boat glue etc.
