A large (17+ pounds) and very friendly neighborhood tomcat comes to visit many days. He's often waiting in the morning so he can come in for second breakfast (he lives at the far end of the block and is put outside on nice weather days). He claimed a spot on a workbench so I supplied him with a box and old towel. He makes it very clear that when he's in residence that is HIS territory and I should keep my hands away from HIS space. Once he's back on neutral ground he's quite demanding of petting and kibble treats.
cheers,
Michael

He looks like a Bombay.
They are beautiful and very friendly (when needed...). We had one and the only drawback was when he decided to sit on your lap (weight!).
Michael Moore
14th March 2018, 12:40
He's shown no interests in laps but he's keen on stropping against legs, begging in the hope of getting kibble treats (for which he seems to have an insatiable appetite). He wants to go where the people are going, though his tendency of following from in front got his paw stepped on one time when I momentarily lost track of him.
Having a time-share in someone else's cat is very convenient and we give him somewhere to go when he's put outside when the weather is nice when his owners go to work/school on weekdays.
He's a good excuse for stopping work in the garage; paying attention to his majesty is easy to justify as a higher priority. :)
cheers,
Michael

He does indeed look very like a Bombay. Coming from American Burmese I'd have expected a shorter head - but we don't know the other side of the pedigree.
We've sold Burmese into the US to breeders who don't like the very short round heads of the local version.
Yes, Michael, a cat breeder....for over 30 years....

Greg, it was clear to me that you were a person of distinction, the cat connection adds a bit of icing to the cake!
His people have named him Dragon Master Chi because he's territorial like a dragon (I was told they never see another cat in their yard). We didn't connect with them until the cat had been visiting for a year or so and we'd been calling him Tom Drooley, after the Kingston Trio folk song. Once he starts getting petted or fed treats he gets very drippy.
He's the most fastidious cat I've met. He can't seem to go more than a couple minutes without a quick bath on some portion of his anatomy.
Unfortunately that territorial tendency had him running off Ms. Kitty, who is a skittish stray that moved her litter of kittens into our back yard several years ago. We captured them all and gave them to a rescue group but her calling them in the night after they were gone was heart-breaking. She's a very pretty long-haired tuxedo cat and it seems like she must have been housed at some point as she's not totally afraid of people. I had gotten her showing up many mornings and had her coming into the garage to eat while I sat on the ground about 4 feet away, and I had hopes of eventually getting her tamed to where I could take her down for shots/spaying. But she showed up to get a bite one time when Tommy was here and while she put up a good front he smacked her and chased her off, and we've not seen her since.
We'd be happy to feed all the kitties but it looks like if Tommy is going to be around we won't be seeing any of the others unless they slip in when he is out making his rounds.
Here's another photo when he came up one morning. The table legs are about 20" apart to give you an idea of his size. He can stand up on his hind legs and look out a window that is 28" high at the sill, though I'm not sure if he's seeing more than sky.
cheers,
Michael

Tommy has claimed my chair in the living room, but I'm having some luck with getting there first and coaxing him onto my lap for his nap. I haven't had even a part-time cat for 40+ years and I'd forgotten how pleasant it can be to have a cat snoozing on my lap while I pet it.
A black cat in a dimly lit room makes for a difficult photographic subject.

I'm in the state of health where I frequently doze off in a chair in the lounge. Try waking up covered in cats...Slight exaggeration at present as there are currently only two Burmese adults and one kitten inside - but once the latest litter is big enough to socialise it'll be a reality.
The black cat in the dark thing is a reality here too. The female kitten being run on for later collection by a breeder is about 12 weeks now and a bossy, inquisitive little madame. Follows you around demanding attention stridently. And she's a seal too so nearly invisible in the shadows.
I'm just a catrack - and automatic feeder...

cc rider, I'd be happy to see signs of Ms. Kitty, but she was such a scaredy-cat, and with Tommy coming around (and him beating up on her when he chased her off) she probably moved elsewhere in the neighborhood, hopefully to a different spot where she can get food easily. The kibble that is outside seems to only diminish when Tommy comes for a visit. I know of other people on the block who don't have cats that do put some food out, and I'm happy to do my part by keeping Tommy in our house in the morning so he's not out getting into fights.
I like the photos of the house cats in the snow, they don't look at all uncomfortable.
Greg, the mantel collection looks like they'd be a handful (or five) when they all decide to go crazy and race around after each other.

My wife and I have had cats for most of our lives and currently have 2. Our part Russian Blue, Thomas, is just coming up for 17. We got him as a rescue kitten. He's well known in the neighbourhood because he knows that an outboard engine being flushed = snapper or kingfish. Turns up at various neighbours and sits patiently until they start filleting. Never begs. One neighbour puts a couple of fish scales on his back to show he's been fed! Even comes for walks along the beach behind our place. The tabby, Annie, turned up in our garden when she was a wee kitty just a few weeks old and never left. She's about 7 now. Whenever I'm working in the garden, she's there supervising me.

My neighbours had a thumbed cat. Polydactyl they're called. They used to be popular on ships I believe cause they fell overboard less. Or something.
Gave it away they did. Could have given it to me...

At twenty years I had to say bye bye to my baby yesterday (Maxxie). Great cat I miss her.:bye:
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your pal. I'm already dreading the day when DMC/Tom Drooley can no longer hop up on the fences to come down to spend the day with us.
I've been having a lot of success with convincing Tommy that a lap (with foam cushion and towel because he's a big boy and needs the extra support) is an appropriate place for a nap. Sometimes I have to entice him up with a treat, but other times he'll sit and look at me like he's thinking "why don't you sit down, get the cushion, and let me jump up and go to sleep?"
I did a few cell phone photos yesterday when he was napping, they don't do justice to his glory.
http://www.eurospares.com/graphics/cats/
The arms on the recliner chair are about 22-23" apart, and he has to curve his back a bit to get his head and butt between them. I need a bigger foam cushion as he'll overhang the edges sometimes.
No, I'm not strangling him in some of those photos (and I don't know why he looks so greasy, I guess it is just the shine from his black fur). An interesting thing to me is that he very much likes having a pillow for his head, normally my fingers/hand/wrist/fore arm, whatever is closest. He'll also stick his nose under my hand so he can have his face cupped lightly while he sleeps. Greg told me he's had a few cats that were like that, and they were all males too.
http://www.eurospares.com/graphics/cats/Tommy_IMG_20180828_104107a.jpg
I'll often get a quick chin bump from him when he gets up on my lap before he settles down, one hirsute visage to another.
Unfortunately, while Tommy is a bully to smaller cats, there's a tom a few doors over that is bigger than he is that has been coming around and putting Tommy on guard. We'll hear a yowling from the back yard and I'll find Tommy and Hamilton having a stare-off. Tommy doesn't back down until I come out, and then he'll turn and do an extremely slow walk away towards me with a stop for a quick lick now and then, to show that he's not running away. Today they were about 3 feet apart when I went out, but so far there's been no violence. I think that neither cat really wants to get physical as Tommy is a bit over 17 pounds and Hamilton (a very attractive cream/orange short hair with blue eyes) is probably a couple pounds heavier and much more burly.
So letting the cat in and keeping him in as long as possible during the day (before he goes home after our supper) seems like the best plan for reducing bloodshed. Unfortunately, once he's asleep on my lap I feel obligated to let him sleep until he's ready to get up, which may be 3+ hours. But being a cat mattress is a better retirement past time than some things I can think of though it makes it difficult to get anything else done.
cheers,
Michael

As some of you know, we breed Burmese...Last spring, we couldn't get anything pregnant - weird weather - so this year when a girl called, it was straight to the stud. Hence the fact we have four litters at present. Two lots of two, 10 kits in each pack. Luckily there'a about 6 weeks between the two lots so it's manageable. Most of the older lot are sold too so it's just the last few weeks rearing now for them.
However...Burmese are intelligent. Too damm intelligent. At the moment it's like having an Outward Bound course in our lounge and kitchen. They're going for runs up the passage, climbing and abseiling off anything that stands still. Playing ball games incessantly. Developing teamwork too. They realised there was a gap behind the stove so teamed up to move a half full waterbottle that was in the way. Then sent in a 4 kit exploration team while the others stood around and watched. Led by the two blues of course - natural ringleaders.
They've just realised the shouty girl up the other end of the passage has been moved so I'm expecting they'll move onto advanced stair climbing followed by the "look at me I can fly " module based off the upstairs landing.
It's fun if you can take the pressure...

Surviving with relatively few wounds so far...The one seal boy in this lot thinks humans are made for his climbing pleasure. If I'm working at the kitchen bench and feel a kitten scaling my legs, I know just who it is.
The blank look once a peak is climbed is simply the search for somewhere higher to move on to. A couple of our girls - when they don't have kittens - have an evening workout session where they leap from door - top to shelves to pelmets to anything high enough to be fun. For them....

It has been cold enough recently for us to start running the heater now and then. Tommy discovered the warm heater vents when he came to visit several days ago, but he had to work around the table that is in the way of the vent in the living room for a nap. After he moved we pulled the table about a foot away from the wall to give him access to the vent. It was easier to do that than to worry about him being less than maximally comfortable.
It is interesting how furniture rearranging is done to benefit the visiting feline overlord.

a few years ago our daughter had a cat, ollie, he used come have a shower with me, was not afraid of water, when we lived in CHCH he would turn up home with fairly large goldfish, we didn't have a goldfish pond. he used to sit on my shoulder at the tea table and expect to be fed, when i went back farming he adapted from city life to farm life real well, he would jump up on the calf feeders to get a drink while i was feeding the calves, kids used to get annoyed when we got fish and chips, i would get two pieces of blue Cod for me and give Ollie half a piece, the kids weren't allowed blue cod as it was to expensive, he repaid the favour by bringing birds, rabbits, mice, rats, flappers and once a swampy fledgling and drop them by my chair sometimes still alive so they would be warm. had real character that cat
broke my heart when we had to put him down with cancer at only 6yrs old, such a cool cat

Thanks Dave,
For a cat that was pretty much feral, he's got such a sweet narure. He's a bit wary of strangers but he's a real smoocher with us. I'm the same as you with a big tabby who comes visiting. Have no idea where it's from but it just wants to be friends. Doesn't look underfed so that makes it easier just to talk to it :-)

It's cost us another round of vaccinations - which would usually be done in the new home. Hopefully they can go next week.
It is actually dangerous to stay in our lounge at the time of the 9pm crazies. They're getting to be big kittens and at that time they have their big playtime of the day.

We used to breed Birmans. When asked the difference between Birman personality and Burmese, I'd always say that it's obvious around a camera.
Pull out a camera and a Burmese wants to take it apart to see how it works - but a Birman will look for a nice background to have it's picture taken.
Not a joke. This trait in Birmans followed across several generations. They particularly liked colour co-ordinated cushions.

That's just great! And Tonkinese were born to rule. We had Siamese when i was a kid. My mother bred them. Which is how I got into it.
The dominance gene is strong in that lot. I remember watching from the workshop at home when an Alsation came on the property and starting to come out to deal with it.
i stopped and watched as 3 Siamese rounded it up and herded it out - it slunk away, tail down, very subdued, LOL.
Tonks are rare in NZ now. Two breeders AFAIK. The NZCF generation progression means you need four generations to be full register. But in Tonks, the first cross is the finished product. Mad
Back in the 80's we sold a pair of Burmese breeding girls to Connecticut USA to a Tonk breeder. US Burmese had a health problem at that time - and were heavier than ideal for Tonk breeding.
We kept in touch for quite a while. They did very well with what they got from our lines. Made the Cat Fancy of America national top ten regularly for the next 6 or 7 years.

I must thank a cat for one of the best laughs I've had in eons.
Our neighbours / tenants had a damp patch in the spare room.. It turned out to be a rotten floor caused by water leaking from the bath seal which abuts the wall.
Quite a big section of floor needed to be replaced so the gib had to come off and I had a violent afternoon removing the wardrobe which had been nailed and glued to the framing before the gib went on.
Knowing my limits I got a builder in to replace the floor and gib.
Great, a few hours work and we are sorted, ready for paint tomorrow.
 8pm and a knock on the door.. Our neighbour is standing there trying to tell me the cat has been gibbed into the wall, nay says I, must be under the house.... No, it ain't..
The first thing that went through my mind was just to leave it. Only kidding! I had visions of having to rip the gib off and devastating the place. My better half re-assured me that the gib had been screwed on - she knows how much I like screwing - I was doubtful.
Luckily she was right and had had a bit of a conversation with the builder on this point, he was a nail man. This lifted my mood and the ridiculousness of the situation took hold, just about pee'd myself laughing.
I unscrewed the gib and sure enough, the little furry git was happily tucked up underneath the bath. Not keen on coming out, though. Did eventually.
Next day the gib went back on and was stopped again, we counted the cats thrice before the work.
All's well that ends well, but check your cavities if you have inquisitive cats!

Burmese and Burmillas only now. Never bred Siamese myself, don't like what they've developed into now. Too extreme.
And we're nominally tapering down. Ha. Lost our old Burmilla boy recently so there's a complicted deal going down where we get the use of another outcross boy - and his owner gets the shorthair boy from this litter.
But just in case, we're running on his longhair litter brother. And we wound up with a stunning lilac burmese girl when that sale fell through recently.
Enough to keep us going longer than we'd planned.

Way back just after i built on the farm i was under siege by mice and mainly rats - to the point where part way through dinner if i went downstairs to throw some wood on the fire by the time i got back there would be new little footprints on the table and dinner would be noticeably less... after spending a fortune on traps and peanut butter i reluctantly decided to get a cat (I've always thought they are selfish con-artists) and in due course Lucy arrived...She quickly figured out that the place to be in winter was in front of the fire regardless of what the rats were up to, except the time i was pouring most of 300 amps into an outboard crankcase with the tig welder, then, unknown by me she decided the place to be was with her face about 100mm from the weld pool... needless to say she never caught anything after that but still managed to live to 16 or so (and eat 3 or 4 thousand dollars worth of cat food)

Slightly off topic but if you have to bait for rodents again... hot from the oven pizza crust.
Years ago I had a crappy flat in a Council building (awful bloody things) and of course there were mice. I tried quite a few options before giving the homecooked pizza a go. I've baited the mousetrap like that, flicked the lights off and left the room, before I've sat down again there's a snap and oh look, gotcha.
Rats are tricky, they can smell it on the trap if you've handled it with bare hands and will avoid any recent scent of humans no matter how tempting the bait. Gotta glove up first.
jato
27th April 2020, 13:09
Equally off topic... like you say rats are tricky - i had one that was near enough to a flatmate for months on end, a big f..ker with plenty of arrogance too. traps didn't work on him and i ended up having the 22 with me both upstairs in the living area or downstairs in the workshop, thinking it would be easier to fix a single hole than put up with his damage (2 in the morning its chew chew in the wall then water is pouring out from behind the gib . and the list goes on). so one evening i spotted him on the window ledge downstairs by the lathe - ok i think, if i have to get the window as well... last second he moved along a bit and snuck in to the back of the fridge (you could see him behind the condensor) - weighing up further sleep deprivation or a new fridge i decided its the rat at (almost) any cost. He was onto me though because everytime i was about to shoot him he'd wriggle in a bit more . next move was heaps of barricading with ply so the only way out was past the 22. i got the fire extinguisher handy then lit some news paper and slid it under the fridge and waited - sure enough he poked his nose out but saw me and went back into the workings... so we all know what the next stage is/was. next morning was spent cleaning Dry Powder off the lathe and amazingly on the window ledge were his powdery prints, he never came back though.

So its rat season again and they are back in droves... due to past experiences i've developed a zero tolerance approach this winter, but there are consequences to that... literally a dozen traps set (some real expensive never fail types ) with every possible bait and so far its one caught out of about 30 misfires and half a dozen skirmishes in the workshop. sleep deprivation adds to the intensity of the battles too. so late last night Jenny (beardie workshop mate) was circling the lathe and it didn't take long to work out it was hiding amongst the headstock drive...out with a few spanners and a couple of panels off and there it is wedged up out of reach (jenny doing backflips and egging me on) so i reached in and grabbed its tail and pulled and it quickly went to 4wd low ratio and pulled too - none of us gave in and eventually a shortened rat ran off... so washed up and off to bed muttering about effin rats. 4am and there's more commotion downstairs which ended with the rat hiding in the engine bay of the truck (the stakes move up a level or two now) lifted the bonnet and there it is - so what do you do ? you grab the f...er , which i did and of course it sunk its dirty teeth into me down to the thumb bone. i briefly let it go then thought F you and grabbed it again and passed it to jenny. so now theres only about 15 rats left but i spent the day in town getting cleaned/patched vaccinated and invoiced... any thoughts? poison is not an option re Jenny

Under the house edges is a good spot.
The dogs historically haven't touched poisoned rats. Don't know why - smell ?
The baits make the rat dehydrated, you'll often find them by a water source.

Some baits do others cause the blood not to clot.
Cholecalciferol is supposed to have a low risk of secondary and causes increased thrist.
Warfarin is also a low secondary poisoning risk
You can also use a bait station.
i would have thought the last issue you would have was not enough rodent eaters.

I use compost bins which are sealed from terrestrial animules but open to the ground. Some also have air holes in them - not too big but still holes. Despite only putting vegetable waste in the bins, the rats always turn up anyway. Their tracks are obvious so when I see 'em I drop in a few baits...or ten. There must be some big mothers of rats out there judging by the last corpse I found yesterday. Don't often find the dead but this was a doozy.
