View Full Version : SV650 F3 after having raced F1?

Having hurt myself on a stupid dirt bike and realising the track is prob safer overall I find myself wanting another toy. Problem is I am not flush enough to get what I would prefer so am looking a little smaller than anything I've ridden, namely an SV650.
My concern would be that it'd be too much of a drop from what I had? That and I know nothing about those twins. Are they pretty robust for thrashing constantly?
Not interested in getting anything old that needs a shed full of spares to keep it going, just a modernish reliable steed that will amuse me when I can get the chance to get off from work and to a track..............maybe even the odd race :innocent:

He doesn't want a shed full of spares Fish.
I've raced a protwin after my superbike. The racing is good, but it does lack something. The speed.

The big question is "Do you race for the ultimate speed or just to be faster than the rest of the field?"

It lacks the power to save you from a small mistake. Still goes quick enough to hurt when you make a big mistake though.

I use mine for work + the track, no more than an hour for the conversion. Theyre also good for the hillclimbs & sprints that are coming up over summer.

Thanks for the replies.
So buying something with say 30k's on it would not be a prob?
I'd prob be doing more test days than anything else which is why I wonder if the fun factor will be there if not battling with others?

You would be better off getting something already at the spec you want I reckon. I owned an SV650 (naked) from new in 2006. Great bike, no question, but things it needed were (in order). A better rear shock. Send the forks to Robert for a sort out. End can/power commander maybe. bit of crash protection and you're golden. Get the EFI one rather than the first (carbed) one for ease of tuning.
I've seen a few with GSxR600 front ends in them which would be a major upgrade.

Once you're racing it's cool, but just for a buzz, you won't feel it like ya did the thou.

sign up for one of those S1000RR deals if it comes off.

They seem to be pretty reliable if you keep the engine stock. Having said that, I know of at least 3 pro-twins that have lunched them selves with conrod failures but they were full time race bikes.
You'd probably find Manfeild less exciting but Taupo track 2 more fun?

Well over the last 5 years I have raced 400's, a classic norton domy then a new 600, then a Rg150, now im borrowing a post classic 600. The F3 relm will improve the crap out of your corner entry and mid corner speed. I don't think you'll regret it - you will either have blast and be surprised or have a balst and then get bored with no power......You will laugh your but off with Wide open throttle hilarity. What about a ER6, they are stupid reliable and different :-)

Hell that inspires confidence in spending all my slowly saved cash haha.
Have had a think about it and I'd mainly be doing track/test days with my current shift roster so am thinking if not racing, the SV or similar might bore me(that sounds wanky dunnit?) if doing laps on my own.
Fuck I shoulda kept my Gixser 600 trackie...........damn track keeps calling back haha!

3 seasons of top placing Pro Twin riding including club winter series is about the limit of a stock crank/rods in a SV (That is a fresh crank...either new or rebuilt)
That is my humble opinion on their lifespan.
If its a high milage road bike - obviuosly less. If you are only a club rider (no offence) then they can last much longer.
Its the constant high rpm (and subsequent over revs that kill them) as the cranks are heavy...and flywheel is mega heavy....
Im sure GW will correct me if im wrong as he has probebely seen it all.

Hmm I think they must have been the only stock ones as the other bikes don't use the stock rods? :girlfight:

If i've told you once . I've told you a million times Billy The 1000 motor bolts straight into the 650 frame mate, then add a bit of oxgenated fuel and the trusty sv can just about keep up with a Tigraft......

Wow.....You fullas are really sneaky,To recap,You design and build a chrome moly frame to fit the 650 engine and then shoehorn a 1000 engine into it,We never would have picked that up,Bit silly though really,You should have saved yourself some stress and designed it around the 1000 motor to start off with.
