Accidently dropped my helmet yesterday, managed to reduce the impact a little by fumbling to catch it against my bike so the impact was from only 40cms or so.
Have uploaded a couple pics, do I need to replace it? :weep:

Only looking at the pics on my phone, but any damage is too much damage. I'm guessing by the fact you asked the question, you really already know the answer.

I just had to replace my wallet this weekend, that hurt, but my other one was looking like a handbag...:corn:
...and yip, replace any dropped helmet, visual damage may be minimal but its what you can't see that may come back to bite you.
Next fall/drop, it could just bust wide open.
TIP: Dont ever leave your helmet on the bike seat.

I like to put it on the mirror which has worked every other time, but the clutch lever happened to be in the way this time and it never went on properly.
Would it really split open if/when the next fall happened?

Would have thought your main danger would be from a penetrative force hitting close to the damage as you have lost the outer shell at that point. Have a wee peek at this video.

The part of the helmet that saves your bacon is the impact-absorbing filler that is underneath the plastic shell - the shell holds the helmet together and gives some protection from penetrating impacts. The problem is that the foamy stuff inside that absorbs the knocks only absorbs a hit once and then it's compromised. You can't really tell if it's still good or not.
Given that you've got visible damage to the ABS shell I would be a bit sketchy about that lid - and I'm a cheap bastard.

Never hang your helmet off the mirror either.
It is likely to fall, but I guess you know that now.
The best place for a helmet is on your head. 2nd best is in your hand.
If you need to put it down, put it on the ground. It can't fall any lower if it is already there!
If at a fuel station then somwtimes I leave it on the pump, if it is a place that I trust... (bare in mind all sorts of people with no money are attracted to those places).
There are combination carabinas you can buy that fit in your pocket, and lock your helmet (with double D rings) to any bike. This may be a good investment.

Since a helmet can be damaged internally without any obvious external damage, how do you know it hasn't been dropped somewhere between (and including) the manufacturer to the retailer?

Yeah but that hole in the shell is still of concern. Maybe repairable but wouldn't know where to start.

Up to you, but put it like this... I spilled at 25kph, a scratch smaller than what you show there, and not the impact like dropping it of the bike, and no 'hole in the shell' ,,, result?
A $600 Nolan had a hammer put through the top of it and the straps cut off.

I remember a similar thread a few months ago. IRC only if the helmet hits the ground with a bit of weight behind it will cause it damage. I personally wouldn't worry too much about cracking the shell.

Yer a Leg end our Kid!
While any visible damage is obvious, it's what has happened inside that counts, there is a good chance ( I say, "chance" ) that your helmet might be perfectly alright.
Butt, it seriously is not worth taking the risk.
Please take Kitty up on her kind offer or go get another, to be sure.
You will only ever need your helmet to do it's JOB once, after that it's get another anyhow.
Insurance, depending on who you've got your bike with, may well cover it.

Thanks for the offer Kitty, I went to Cycletreads where I purchased it from, they said it should be fine. Not too confident in his information though, he told me you can essentially throw the helmet on the ground and it doesn't affect the white polystyrene stuff.
Once I get some more monies I might look at getting another one though

You'd be right not to be confident in that information..... the white stuff inside is designed to deform some and spread the load of an impact,,, 'cushioning' if you like.... take into account as was pointed out about an unrestrained baby in a car accident (weight is not much more than your head) at 50kph, Arnold Schwartzie would not be able to hold onto the kid (in his 'heyday') so the polystyrene has to absorb a lot of energy, by deforming, so cant be too soft, cant be too hard, hence why polystyrene is so good as a crash helmet 'impact' absorbing liner.
The plastic shell is a 'use once' direct impact shell that absorbs the high load (initial sharp impact) and transfers it to the white liner... if the shell is compromised, even a hairline crack, it could very likely split open and leave the soft inner liner to absorb the direct impact... which it wont.

That's interesting, so he's very specifically said if it falls off your bike seat there may be cosmetic damage but its fine. See around 7 mins. Man thats contrary to what I always thought, but what would he know he only makes them.

another reason to ditch it----- sticking it on your mirror often damages the interior polystyrene mould and diminishes the protection value that it has too. next worseerer step is sticking it on a gas tank on a hot day, the petrol fumes are really good at destroying the internal shell without ya even knowing

Gotta say if it was only 40cm it should be fine, mind you I do find it a bit hard to tell the size of the indentation from your photo. If moneys a problem at the moment its better than no helmet at all. Heck if you had to buy a new helmet every time it was dropped a short distance from the ground nobody would be able to afford to buy a bike to wear it on.

How does putting it on the mirror damage it? I've always had it so that the mirror actually sticks out the part where your eyes look out of? Of course with the visor open, I does it this way because it makes it very difficult for it to then fall off. Come to think of it my last Oxford helmet was dropped plenty of times. I used to put that on the mirror too, I'd go into a shop and find it on the ground or put back on my gas tank haha. I'd even dropped it from a decent height and it landed square on top of it. And then I crashed and it was fine, thing is the shell was never damage like this one is.
I know at the end of the day "is the cost of a new helmet worth your life"

I saw a helmet xray on line (cant find it now) where the damage on the outer shell was minimal (bit more than your pic but not much) but the xray clearly showed the striations in the shell. remember you are looking at the underneath of the damage: It was pushed IN from this point so the other side of the shell is where the damage likely occurs.

I've found that a bike seat is fantastic for up to as many as a dozen donuts.
The other great place on a bike for a helmet is the red flashing light on the pole at the rear.
Um, haven't all bikes got one of those?

What make is it?
Some manufacturers (Arai & Shoei for certain in Europe and the US, don't know about here) will check out your helmet and tell you if it's ok or not. For a fee of course but a lot cheaper than a new helmet if it's ok.
A UK magazine (Ride) did a investigation into the "any drop wrecks your helmet" belief several years ago by throwing helmets down a stairwell and then putting them through the BS/CE test. All passed the "falling off your seat" test, one (Arai I think - years ago) survived being dropped two floors!!!!

I would definitely not get rid of it with a small fall like that.
I have dropped mine off my seat before and I still use it. I don't think it would be ruined just from that.
I would say that it'd be fine. Like someone said before, if a helmet is ruined from falling 40cm, it's gotta be a pretty crap helmet.

mmm, Im rossi,
I am racing in the formula one competition,
I take a small fall and slide across the shingle pit
My helmet hits the ground several times during this at a good speed.
I get up pick up my race bike, and rejoin the race
OH SHIT!!
Must stop in the pits and get a new helmet, this one is now unsafe to use at speeds in excess of 200KPH I cannot race anymore....
'
Really????
A 40cm fall that "chips" the paint and all you experts ("X" being the unknown factor, "Spert" being a drip under pressure)
Are shouting, replace replace replace, life risk, dangerous, totally fucked.....
How many people who race bikes have been using the same helmet for many ,many races including one where they kissed the road.
Did they under duress from scrutineers change the helmet immediately, just because of a small scratch, chip or graze?
es If the outer skin is cracked, and the inner lining crushed, then replacement is needed immediately.
Well, thats my view on this matter,
Am I entitiled to this? or will I get flamed because I are opposite to the majority here.
Bugger I better replace my helmet, it has about 30 chips the same as this all around the back of it, Came from the brass dome buttons on my shoulder epaulets coming undone and hitting it, probably with more force than this small drop. Amazing really.

In my experience, race helmets have a limited life span, or expiry date. Scrutineers tell you to replace them. If you have a decent sized crash, where you are injured, race officials can and do take the helmet off you. You may get it back, minus the straps which they cut off.
Luckily for me so far, (fingers crossed) I haven't dropped my helmet and I don't want to.... I have an expensive one.
