Hello all :)

My name's aimee, and it would appear that I'm joining the biker family :) I've only ever ridden pillion on motorcycles, but having recently returned from the Mongol Rally (where I drove for 11,000 km over 21 days), I've come back with a hankering for some more excitement in my life.

So I've purchased a wee Suzuki GN125H (yes, yes, I know, but it's for me to _learn_ on), and intend to have my learners and BHS sorted out by the end of this weekend.

WHICH...leads me to a question. What do people think of Nick/Streetwise.co.nz? Is he any good? I've seen one bad review, but it's from years ago... I've also heard Andrew's great, but his course is 7 hours long, and quite a bit pricier. I'm also told Stephen is an option, but it's out in the Hutt, and me (and me bike) are in Wellington central.

Anyhoo, fantastic to meet y'all!

a. Take ya time and learn about ya bike, talk to a few ppl about what you'll need to know during the BHS and learn them skills in car parks etc, I know Andrew does half day/price courses if you have the base skills just to run you through the test (shouldn't call it that cause it's so relaxed)

There's another guy out foxton ways who could be cheaper and seeing they supply the bikes you only need to get there !
If ya need his number just holla (Quote button)

My partner did her BHS with Andrew, he can be a bit 'direct' in his presentation, but the guy knows his shit!!!

Hey Aimee!
I've got the same bike, it's suited me nicely while I've been learning. It's a good little bike, starts every time and super good on petrol I'm now learning!
You *will* get to the point I'm at now where you want something bigger quite quickly and look to upgrade, but if you're anything like me you will be tempted to hold on to the little fellah for putting around and using F all petrol. :scooter:
In saying that, it takes me over the harbour bridge everyday at 80 (speed limit) easily :)
You have to ignore a lot of what the boys(and some of the girls) on here say. They will try to wind you up.

Prob not sadly, lack of funds at this moment... *sigh* But I'll be keeping an eye out for ones popping up in a couple weeks. Gotta sell my soul to the devil for money or sumthin. haha
Spent too much money on things like Luges and Zorbs and at The Fat Dog Cafe (everyone MUST go) when I went to Rotorua last weekend.
Problem is, I'm prob gonna have to sell my GN to get new bike :( and I don't want to be without a bike for ANY amount of time haha

Hey there!

Yep, I've been told I'll prolly want to upgrade soonish, but I figured I'd be sensible (anathema in biking circles, I know!), get a bike I could easily handle, and then take it from there. As opposed to doing the equivalent of one's first time on a horse being on a 19 hands war horse (if nothing else, I'd like not to scare myself so badly I don't wanna ride anymore).

And yep, I'm primarily going to be using it to putter to work and back. A grand total of 6km along the bays in Wellington. Tough :P

As to other people winding me up? Meh. I'm not easily bothered, I have to say :) But thanks for the kind words nonetheless!

Very good plan!! Oh you should be sweet for a few months then :) It'll take you to and from happily and weekend rides if you do choose to do any. There's no shame in keeping the GN125 if you're happy with it anyway! :)
Just a quick note that you may or may not be aware off, the white lines are verrrrrry slippery when wet. And the green stuff for the bus lanes. So be careful when you put your foot down. Almost stacked it this morning from slipping sideways. Saved it at the last minute. Felt like a fooool.

Have you found the compartment for the tool kit yet? It's a really handy place for putting little things in. I've been known to put things in it (ie, wallet when it's raining) when riding around.

I know ALL about slipperiness from cycling... And I'm getting a nanabox on the back, too - the HEIGHT of sexy motorcycliness, I know, but I can keep:
- my makeup, hairdryer (I don't actually have hair long enough for that atm, but anyway) and assorted GIRLY things in it (according to the boys)
- tools, possibly lunch, some books and random tech bits in it (according to me, heh)

:P

Sounds like you've got it sorted and know enough to know yourself, good on you for getting a sensible bike and wanting to learn about it before getting another.
Welly can be a bit..... windy at times and small ones do get a bit of blow about troubling them, but hey even that teaches you something, so have fun, learn your limits safely and above all enjoy yourself while riding about the place while other fools sit in cars.
Welcome.

HA! Don't worry, I have one of those. BEST purchase I have ever made.
Especially cause I have to wear those damn fancy work clothes at work and not just jeans and a hoody. Awesome for dashing to the shop too.
Make sure you load evenly haha otherwise you'll end up toppling one way haha. Especially if you have books in there!!!

Hi Aimee, I'm new here myself but can tell you Nick is a very good instructor. I did my BHS test with him back in May and he's very relaxed and patient, and explains things well. I'll be going back at some stage (when I have a bike!) to do some on road training with him. Waiting for 1st October!

Cheers.

It was - it really, really was. Yesterday around the peninsula was interesting, but going home back around the bays was ril fun, especially the beeeeeg Oriental Bay corner, where it turns from LIttle Karaka Bay into Oriental Bay. BUT I made it!

I've previously found the motorway on a windy day was interesting too - poor little tiny Mort :P

Well, the throttle was definitely being cranked more! That corner was a bit dodge (well, by my standards. which is not dodge at all, talking to people) though when a gust caught me, so slowed down a little, with the expected buffeting that goes with that. Poor wee bike battles a bit, I think. Still, all new fun skills to learn!

No. You're correct. That corner is shithouse in the wind.
